On Khun Samee and Tawanchai

lovefia

Posted on December 19, 2012

Is there a time in your life where you want to like something, but you just can’t? I’m currently experiencing this. I like Chompoo Araya so I gave Khun Samee a gander (one episode, really) and didn’t find myself drawn. Then I cheated and read recaps for ep 2-4 from DarknessLakorns and it doesn’t sound like something I would continue. Rome’s character, although appearing to be the ideal man, just sounds so boring. Also, Chompoo is turning out to be quite mean, what’s appealing about that? Speaking of which, Tawanchai Nai Marn Mek is not doing it for me either. Tawanchai, played by Taew, is an aspiring writer who wants nothing more than to write and read all day. Don’t we all? But there…

Beyond Comparison II- First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on December 16, 2012

The show is not over until the fat lady sings. Airing in mid December, our new weekend primetime, Nuer Mek 2 (Beyond Comparison II) may just make it to my top 2012 lakorn list. From the production team, Metha Lae Mahaniyom- which brought us one of my favorite lakorns in 2011, Tawan Deard, a story about one man’s vendetta- Nuer Mek 2 examines the theme of good versus evil, amidst the political, philosophical and science fiction field. The story centers on Special Agent Sangkla, alongside his quirky employee, Sargeant Saming and they must stop Winyoo, the dark science (black magic) guru from finding the four divine weapons and reaching his full potential power. In the smaller scheme of things, Winyoo is the personal advisor…

Be careful what you wish for: Raak Boon

lovefia

Posted on November 19, 2012

Brought to us by TV Scene, Raak Boon (The Holy Source) which debuted last weekend, featured Mike Pirath as Lapin/Ton and Margie Rasri as Jae, and it explored the idea of a powerful ancient box that could make your deepest desires come true. Much like a genie indebted to you, this “glong raak boon”- this box of holy source- asks you to repay with three deeds, and upon successful completion, it will grant your greatest wish. The story starts with two people who were chosen by the holy source: Khun Sarat (Ton’s father) and Long (uncle) Tawee (Jae’s mentor.) This happened a long time ago, Long Tawee was a drunkie and his wife had cancer. He wished to abandon his alcoholism and cure his…

Qi Pao- Quick 1st Impression

lovefia

Posted on November 5, 2012

I get scared easily but funny enough, I watch scary movies anyway. So it’s not surprising that Qi Pao- while watching it at 10pm before bed- gave me some serious chills. It is such a pleasure to see Anne Thongprasom on screen again. It felt like ages since Sood Saneha- I did not watch Chaloey Sak or 365 Days of Love- so I was drinking in her superb acting and beautiful countenance. The biggest surprise though from Qi Pao, is Mart Krissada’s charming face (ok why not call him for what he is, gorgeous) and his improved acting. The role of Jao Ming Tian is quite befitting to him. Overall, I am quite pleased with the first episode and I hope that with Anne…

How do you tell the man of your dreams that you have to take a sh–?

Posted on October 23, 2012

There is a time and place for everything. But when the need to excrete happens in the wrong time and place, things can get a little muddled, as Amika (Kimberly Voltemas) learned or Tum (Mark Prin) didn’t learn. It was the masquerade charity ball and everyone is dressed up in cocktail dresses and tuxes with a fancy mask. Amika had been eating junk food prior and realized upon entering the ball, that her stomach didn’t feel so great. She excused herself to the restroom to take care of the problem, hoping that will rid the need for now. She felt so much lighter and relieved. That’s when she met him, Tum, a handsome gentlemen who offered her a drink and accompanied her on the…

The Sixth Sense- First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on September 9, 2012

I am intrigued by the introduction of new actresses, underrated leading actors and the fascinating premise behind sixth sense. I love me a good scary lakorn with the backdrop of white/black magic, ghosts, spirits and romances strung together due to supernatural conflicts. And hello, there’s Louis Scott! But more about him later. The ability to perceive the unseen world, which is known as sixth sense, is achieved through the five subtle senses of smell, taste, sight, sound and touch. In our latest weekend lakorn, the story explores this spiritual world through five female characters that possess these abilities with an added flair: Yanin can communicate with the other dimension by transporting her spirit to their medium via meditation; Rod not only has the sense…

Prik Gup Kleur- First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on August 20, 2012

High-res version

This lakorn wastes no time with introductions. The first episode opens up with Taywan (Am Sophonpas) conducting Modern Car’s new product launch, Ferrari, to their luxury car dealership. Even their competitor, Luxury Car’s president and newly acquired young wife, came to congratulate them on their leg up in the competition. Where there are severe age gap in marriage, there are contentions. Modern Car’s president’s wife, spoke to how young Luxury Car’s president’s wife looks. But before she could embarrass her further, her daughter, Jid (Pancake Khemanit) the diva daughter of Modern Car, came to ruin the day. She accuses her father and her father’s secretary Rattana, that they were having an affair.

She is gutsy, ill-mannered, spoiled, obnoxious and extremely loud. Even her fiancé, Taywan, could not control her. Jid appears to be in her early twenties, recently graduated from college but has not picked up a profession: she is complacent to taunt people and live her hi-so life. She is a product of an unhappy marriage and a child who feels she lacked in love.

Hong Sabat Lai, First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on August 14, 2012

High-res version

Dramatic beginnings for our political thriller “Hong Sabat Lai,” Nay (Janie Tienphosuwan) witnessed the murder of her parents at a very young age and was carted off to Paris by her father’s best friend, a fellow businessman who raised her and instructed her that she must put away the trauma and pain behind her- while her younger brother, Wee or Don (Alex Rendell) was taken under their driver’s wing as his son, living a humble and meager life in Thailand. Fast-forward 10 years; Nay has grown up to be a regal, serious and beautiful woman. She became quietly engaged to Siwat (Art Pasut), her father’s best friend’s son, yet they could not marry until their ultimate goal and plan become realized.

Her father’s best friend, whom Nay regarded as “Uncle,” has devised an elaborate plan to go after the greedy and corrupt man who had murdered her parents. The death of her parents not only represented her tragic past, but it implicated the country’s welfare too. So Uncle contrived for Siwat to run for congress and eventually unveil the bad man’s true colors. However in order to return to Thailand and remain safe from the bad guys, Uncle hired a bodyguard, Rabin (Por Nattawut) to protect Nay. Rabin is not your average bodyguard mind you, he used to be a cop (and very capable one at that) back in Thailand but has lost hope in life as a cop after losing his loved one. He covered up his angst by appearing the complete opposite on the outside, goofy and cheerful, but on the inside, he is tortured and missed his beloved one so.

Love in the Fresh Food Market- First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on August 5, 2012

High-res version

Needing a reprieve from the all encompassing drama of This Land is Our Land, I turned to a new lakorn that promises to be lighthearted, laugh out loud funny and endearing- Rak Kerd Nai Talad Sode- which I will be calling Love in the Fresh Food Market moving forward. This drama is a remake of Andrew Gregson’s lakorn of 2001- needless to say that many of Andy’s lakorns are slowly getting remade like Torranee- this year’s version of Love in the Fresh Food Market brings about a different personality to our leading man’s character, Thong. With Act Art Production and director Off Pongpat (of Roy Mai and Wayupak Montra) along with Mario Maurer as Thong and Margie Rasri as Kim-Lang, this lakorn may just give us a run for our money.

Mario is not a newbie by any means, he is already renown on the silver screen, and debuted on a TV series Plerng Toranong, but surprisingly there is so much more depth to this actor than a serious, cute Plerngrit from Ranong. As Thong, Mario portrayed a funny, fearless and honest vegetable vendor to a tee. The personality he brings to Thong is lively and I feel- the best part about this drama. I find myself tuning into Love in the Fresh Food Market just to see what Thong will do or say next. Not to mention that Mario’s quirky, adorable face makes his character even more appealing.
