Pan Rak Pan Rai (Love Scheme, Evil Scheme)

panrakpanrai

It was a dark and stormy night when a mother was separated with her infant child, amidst a blazing fire that scorched the hospital in Chiang Mai. The infant’s basinet fell into the stream, floating away from her crying birth mother. Resting on the baby girl’s chest lays a necklace with a ring and family pendant that will form as the only remaining evidences to the baby girl’s true heritage.

20 years later, the mother, hailing from a high pedigree, Khun Ying Nappa-Dara still has recurring nightmares about her missing child. She has not moved on and deems it all too painful to bear and wishes to cease living, which in effect pains her father to no end. He regrets his behavior 20 years prior when he worried more about his family honor than his daughter, causing her to seek refuge in Chiang Mai.

But things must change. There has got to be a way to end his daughter’s torment. He finally decides to search for his missing granddaughter by hiring his trusted lawyer to investigate her whereabouts, instructing the man that the orphan should possess a few key evidences to her birthright. Armed with a replica of the necklace, the lawyer (Prap) embarks on the journey to find the missing Khun-Nu.

Character Development in Pon Prom Onlaweng

lovefia

Posted on February 15, 2013

Or the lack thereof.

Four episodes into this drama and one thing is clear, it’s cute. Made completely possible by a simple plot of a woman whose soul resides within a child’s body and she must find her way back. The child, Nong May, happens to be a little gem. She acts so convincingly well as an adult that it doesn’t appear as if a child is playing dress up. And she has excellent chemistry with Boy Pakorn.

ppo

The qualm I have with this drama is that our main characters’ have not been explored. There are opportunities to flesh out these characters and offer the viewers substance and a soul-searching experience. As of this Friday’s episode, we have yet to discover what ticks Dr. Pathawee. What are his strengths, weaknesses? What’s his goal? Apparently he is a brilliant surgeon, a great brother, uncle and potential spouse for many women who are fawning over him. Yet we still don’t know his true essence. Meanwhile, the plot centers around Tanyong who is stuck in a kid’s body and is desperate to return to her own body, which is currently lying on a hospital bed in a coma. From the brief introduction, we know she is heart broken from her fiancé’s betrayal and has a kind heart because she’s willing to go on with the charade of being a child for fear of breaking the child’s family’s heart. But we haven’t received a full story about Tanyong either.

Lovestory-wise, Boy and Bella are so compatible and their scenes together absolutely sweet. Through a child’s eyes, Tanyong is able to see how darn lovable Dr. Pathawee or Uncle Wee is and she is slowly falling for him. The many kisses he adorn, the many hugs he offers. Her mind is focused on trying to find a way to return to her body but her heart is melting. While Dr. Pathawee on the other hand, is treating his niece as the apple of his eyes, he is taking a personal interest in researching a way for Tanyong to recover from her coma. We already know that he has fallen in love with Tanyong on first sight, since that fateful day in the airplane. It wouldn’t be too surprising should their love end with fruition.

Pon Prom Onlaweng Ep. 2 A Child Again

lovefia

Posted on February 12, 2013

I wonder when they say “I hope our paths will cross again someday” are they referring to the point in time where their spirits sync up in a different universe, a world between the here and the heaven? The dark, lonely void where the souls await their fates? After the accident both Yong and Nong May float through the hospital halls trying to communicate with their loved ones, but to no avail. They found each other in that seemingly misty void and embraced. Next thing Yong knows, Nong May’s body disappears from her arms and she could hear a man’s voice calling her, beckoning her to come back to him. She does.

ppo1

At the hospital room Dr. Pathawee perspired from the exertion and anxiety of giving his niece cpr. He refuses to give up, he lost his parents at a young age and he isn’t about to let his beloved niece go. As if from an act of God, Nong May’s heart beats again and he thanks the heavens. Tanyong gains consciousness slowly and peers around her. She wonders where she is at and discovers she is in a hospital room. Soon strangers and a man in a white coat appear before her, rejoice in her apparent good health.

Pon Prom Onlaweng Ep. 1 Intro to Characters

lovefia

Posted on February 11, 2013

Dr. Pathawee (Boy Pakorn) boards an airplane back to Thailand and his life will never be the same again. With one glance, a quick sidelong look, and he is instantly drawn to her. This is the beginning of a problem that doesn’t take root until later: the start of an intertwined destiny with an attractive woman who is returning to her hometown after two years of studying abroad.

ppo

The aforementioned man belongs to a wealthy family, instead of pursuing his idled birthright, his compassionated heart and talented mind steered him to becoming an esteemed brain surgeon instead. He is smart, talented and rich. Not to mention in possession of a big and kind heart. What girl wouldn’t want a piece of this fine specimen? (Minus the notorious facial hair that is.)

But Tanyong (Bella Ranee) has her eyes only for her boyfriend, whom she wants to surprise with her return. She feels guilty for a two year hiatus of their relationship, but trusts that he is as loyal to her as she is to him. Tanyong is naïve and wishful, but a likeable woman. She has a perfect little life, parents who get along and a score of girlfriends who takes her out about town. Even her boyfriend, who is a workaholic, knows where his priorities lie.

But things start to fall apart for Tanyong. Her heart gets torn into pieces when she learns that her boyfriend, now fiancé, has been sleeping with another woman, his secretary no less. For the past two years, they’ve been getting it on while she was studying abroad, remaining chaste for him. The betrayal deems too much for her so she runs away from the reality and drinks herself into oblivion, wishing she could be a kid again so she doesn’t have to encounter such heartbreak.

Body Swap in Pon Prom Onlaweng

lovefia

Posted on January 23, 2013

ornlaweng

It’s madness. Simply madness. I know I complain about remakes and yet, all I watch and anticipate are remakes. Haven’t you taken a good look at my upcoming project list? Well, I’m going to add Pon Prom Onlaweng (Tumultous Destiny/Fate) to my radar. Not for Boy Pakorn. Not for Bella Ranee (since I’ve no idea who she is..) but simply for the memories of PPO (which featured Dodo and Ann Siriam way back when.) It’s one of those older lakorns that challenges clichéd lakorn plots, stretches your emotional acceptance and manages to make you laugh at the same time. It is a rom com after all.

The plot surrounds a grown woman who body swaps with a five year old due to an accident. She gets immersed into the little girl’s life, the family drama as well as her very handsome uncle: the doctor and pr’ek. Not only does she have to resolve her inherent problem, but she must figure out a way to get back to her body!

Cool? No? I’ll definitely be tuning in. I’m just a little bummed that they didn’t pick out an established, super hot pr’ek (like maybe Tik or even Ken T to play the doctor/uncle, sigh, because Dodo back then had me fangirling so much.) But I am willing to give Boy Pakorn another chance..

Nai Pued (Mr. Pued) – A Fanfiction

lovefia

Posted on January 16, 2013

farm Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 10.11.43 PM

Prologue

Seven years after Nai Pued sat atop Chao Guay and regaled the happy ending of his parents, Phu Yai Lee and Malinee, Nai Pued was found at the very spot upon which his buffalo sighed its last breath.  The old girl couldn’t hold on longer than he could make the trek from his university in Krongthep to his hometown in Suphanburi, and she gave out before he could say goodbye.

Such is the case with females, they are so mean; heartless, fickle creatures they are. They make him feel needed and loved but only to fritter away as if he was nothing to them to begin with. At the budding age of nineteen, Nai Pued has developed a severe distrust in females he doesn’t have any relations to. He was beginning to think that he might never understand them at all, humans and animals alike. He used to believe that one day he would find a girl just as sweet as his Mae Ma (Mom Ma) but has resigned to the conclusion that a sweet girl like her is not meant for him.

After all, his high school and college days have attested to the contrary. Females are destructive. To his heart, his mind and flailing self respect.  He was a smart lad, so it only took a few experiences to learn that women always have an ulterior motive. They are sweet but possess a cunning heart. Fake, the whole lot of them.

Nai Pued thought he learned. But the last one really did him in. They met in his last year of his master program at a University in Krongthep. He was finishing up his agricultural management program. He thought she was different. She was able to surpass the barricade he created. So he married her a couple years later, and no more than six months, she couldn’t handle being a farmer’s wife nor deal with her husband being ostracized as an orphan, so she hailed back to Bangkok- and walked away with half of his finances. But at least it was only money. Madam Wan’s land, the beloved, cherished property that deeded over to serve as his trust fund from his Mae Ma, fortunately remained untouched.

So at 29 years old, Nai Pued finally learned his lesson. There will be no more room for females in his home, his mind or in the deepest recess of his heart.

—

This is an epilogue to “Phu Yai Lee Gup Nang Ma” but a prologue to Nai Pued’s grown up life, obviously inspired by the adorable kid and his parents. I was curious about the premise of a once charming and charismatic hero, whose heart gets trampled and is afraid to love again. He encounters a woman who challenges the very idea of his chauvinistic perception. Ultimately, can our heroine rekindle the ashes from the depth of his burnt heart?

Characters and names are based on the lakorn “Phu Yai Lee Gup Nang Ma.” This is a work of a fan! No intentions to offend or use for monetary gain.

Next Recapping Project: Dao Reurng (Summary)

lovefia

Posted on January 7, 2013

Woot! In this lakorn remake, Dao Reurng, starring Por Thrisadee and Yaya Urassaya, we are going to leave the fancy pants in Bangkok and don our plaid shirts (with a gun holster) in the upcountry. From No Problem Production by Mam Thitima and director P’Num Krit, which brought us the lakorn that went straight to my heart, Phoo Yai Lee Gup Nang Ma, Dao Reurng will encompass the quirky, funny and adorable aspect of countryside comedy, but with a different flare.

dao reurng

Things are much more abrasive, a tad more dangerous and all the more torturous for our pr’ek Por Thrisadee. He plays Jin, a newly enthusiastic, inexperienced Deputy (Bpalat) from Bangkok who gets stationed in the countryside. This particular village is a tough gig, not many Bpalats have survived it for more than a couple of months. But Bpalat Jin is up for the challenge. The village is still backwards in their ways and is run by a bunch of ruffians. There are two opposing groups, Phu Yai’s son and Dao Reurng. Bpalat gets entrenched in their warfare. But he is determined to improve the village and their regressive ways.

I have seen Johnny Anfone’s version awhile ago, but I don’t recall the specific subplots (not the way that I did for Maya Tawan hehe) so I am excited to watch this year’s version. Especially having spazzed over Por Thrisadee as Phoo Yai Lee and now he’s going to be Bpalat, what’s not to love? His character is quite lovable and you’ll probably feel for him a lot since he will be tortured by Dao Reurng, but I am more curious to see how a Deputy will reform the village and the pain in the ass, Dao Reurng!

The teasers and behind the scenes have shown that Por T and Yaya are compatible and charismatic together. And for that, I will be recapping this lakorn! No specific air date yet, but I’m definitely anticipating this one- and you can read the recaps here 🙂

A Relationship Fall-Out: Raeng Prathana First Analysis

lovefia

Posted on January 4, 2013

raengprathana2

Raeng Prathana (Powerful Desires) aired its first episode today amidst the turmoil going on behind the scenes of Nuer Mek 2, the very first lakorn that has been cancelled prior to completing its course on TV. Perhaps it will go back on air, after the controversy and political chastising has simmered down. It is unfortunate but it is clear that the government controls the media. Being so far removed from the goings on, one can only speculate at the unfairness of it all.

But it is important to breathe, take a step back and remove the frustrations from the new lakorn that happened to be in line behind Nuer Mek 2: Raeng Prathana, and give it its due diligence.

From the production team LakornThai, Raeng Prathana, starring the beloved Nadech Kugimiya and rising female phenom Kimberley Woltemas, opens the lakorn with a faceoff between Sudapa (Kimberley) and Pittiya (Nadech.) Their first encounter (for us anyway) is character revealing and sets up the premise of the drama.

“Phu Yai Lee Gup Nang Ma”- Headman Lee and Ms. Ma

lovefia

Posted on January 2, 2013

phuyaileegupnangma

In the summer of 2009, Ploy Chermarn and Por Thrisadee embarked on a fun, kick off your high heels, dig your feet in the buffalo’s mud romantic comedy lakorn entitled “Phu Yai Lee Gup Nang Ma” (Headman Lee and Ms. Ma) produced by Mam Thitima of No Problem Production. Inside this Channel 3 drama, we have a country boy meets city girl, Lady and the proverbial Tramp type plot. Despite the atypical, overly done up storyline used in many lakorns, “Headman Lee and Ms. Ma” manages to stay authentically upcountry- thanks to Por Thrisadee’s fine Suphan accent- and endear us with a very cute drama with staying power.

Ploy Chermarn portrays Malinee, a supermodel (as she likes to call it) who was raised in the sparkling city of Bangkok with a high rolling life. But this city girl is pretty grounded in her personality, she is kind and generous, which makes her a prey to the city slicker (and notorious douchebag) named Dick, who really epitomizes his name. Malinee is blinded by love and doesn’t see his true colors, despite her friend’s nagging to the contrary. Her convenient life gets turned upside down when she learns that her grandmother Madam Wan in Suphanburi has passed away, leaving her a decision to dutifully keep the farm or sell it to the Mysterious Headman Lee.

2012 Year In Blogging

lovefia

Posted on December 31, 2012

Things are certainly different in 2012 than 2011. Stats wise or lakorn wise, 2011 has a significant leverage. One can say it won hands down. Along with the myriad of lakorns to blog about in 2011, there were personal circumstances that came into play, which help in well, overall lakorn blogging. It’s best to explore those circumstances for a better understanding of 2012’s small successes.

It’s quite sobering to recall that a year ago, I was living in Jakarta, Indonesia. My career, friends and life were put on pause for my sojourn, long sabbatical in SE Asia. I was able to awaken my personal hobby of blogging and finally, dedicate almost a fulltime focus on lakorns again. They were good times that opened my world up to culture, new friends and a renewed appreciation for lakorns.

Then I returned back to my career, friends and life in the beautiful Pacific Northwest a year later, January of 2012. I was glad to be back, but nostalgic for the life I lived- a lively and lonely time that seemingly interlink, creating a full experience of an expat. But I knew coming back to the U.S. that things are going to be different. I won’t have the time I had in blogging ridiculously daily as I had while living abroad, so how was I going to maintain this labor of love? How was I going to keep readers interested as well as myself invested enough to continue blogging, happily?

It is definitely doable. Life may get in the way, but I feel that interjecting a bit of personal with the shared interest of lakorn can help one feel that one doesn’t always have to write about lakorns. Although, keeping in the back of one’s mind that most readers tune into a blog to help them in certain ways, whether that is for recaps of a drama that they don’t understand, get a review on a drama they are skeptical about or thinking about watching, read first impressions from someone they may trust or simply to find an avenue where they can share their insights/thoughts and spasms with another fellow lakorn enthusiast.

And with that in mind, I am able to hone in my focus for this blog.

Therefore to me, 2012 is a learning curve, a small personal success.

And I have you to thank for that. So without further ado, I’d like to share with you my stats for 2012. Special thanks for those you see listed below and most importantly, to those new individuals, new followers that has found lovefia’s blog to be follow-worthy, to those recurring readers and their continued support, and even the silent ones.

Cheers to a new year- cheers to new friends- and cheers to new lakorns that hopefully, will blow our minds.

Kop kun maak ka (thank you very much) for a fun 2012. I look forward to enjoying another wonderful year of lakorns with you.
