Khun Chai Tharatorn – First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on March 19, 2013

img_450_img-41658What do you get when Thai Indiana Jones meets royalty meets a striking student? Well, Khun Chai Tharatorn of course, story one of the Five Gentlemen Series. The premise of the story centers on Khun Chai Tharatorn Juthathep (aka Khun Chai Yai played by Grate Warintorn), eldest of five siblings, hailing from a long line of Mom Rajawongs (Thai Honorables) who is a professor and archaeologist. This is where the Indiana Jones comes in because our Khun Chai Yai goes on an archaeological excursion to a prasat (ancient castle) and finds himself having to protect the national treasures.

Conflict number two comes in the form of an old age promise his noble father made to his friend: that one of his five sons must marry one of his friends three daughters. We learn that this is due to a debt that their father owed his friend: he saved his life during WWII. Now if one of the three daughters were our main girl, then all would be a fairytale story. Instead we have three girls whom two are pretentious and self-serving, while the eldest is a good egg. Between the two families, everyone presumes that Khun Chai Yai will be best suited for Khun Kate (Mint Natwara), who is demure, unpretentious and kind. It’s hard to hate the girl and you can’t blame Khun Chai Yai for agreeing to see if they click and have any potential future together.

The only problem is, Khun Chai Yai grew up with Momluang Raweerapai aka Maprang or Prang (Pream Ranida), our main girl. She’s sharp, adorable and praises the ground upon which Khun Chai Yai walks upon, not to mention that she’s his student (scandalous!) Khun Chai Yai adores her and treats her very platonically although secretly he thinks about her more than he should think about any mere student or “sister.” But needless to say, our guy is not fully aware of his feelings about this Nong Prang.

Another one bites the dust – Ep 10 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 14, 2013

Yawn. Not due to the lack of sleep mind you, but due to the boredom of being shelled out more of the same things from Love Scheme Evil Scheme. We’re not getting any closer to the goal of gaining Korya’s memory back, nor any closer to the revelation (among the rest of the cast members) that she’s the real daughter. Anyone comes any closer to the truth gets axed, and then the director continues to regurgitate how bad Payia can be by killing off Mae Cheun. She’s capable of real evil, no surprise there. Haven’t you seen the first scene where she beat the crap out of Korya? Besides, I don’t anticipate her turning over a new leaf at all, so I am expecting her eventual karma in death or madness. Either one will be fine by me, I am not vindictive at all, so long as she doesn’t escape and live happily ever after.

It is an action packed episode, filled with guns and people wrestling for something they’re after. I’ll make this quick, and you can enjoy the final scene with Id-Korya.

Screen Shot 2013-03-14 at 2.49.05 PM

First we have Chisanu and Korya trailing after Nop, who jumps out of his friend’s truck because his friend doesn’t want to get involved, smart guy. Nop tries to inconspicuously take the next bus to Chiang Mai but Chisanu apprehends him on time. Chisanu wants to play cops and robbers and tries to take the man down himself. Come on dude, you’re a hi-so tutu, not a detective! Korya tries to help but gets in the way, so Nop grabs her by the neck and pulls out a gun. She notices a wrench in the corner and thinks she can use it to free herself and hurt the perpetrator. Yet she ends up getting shot on the arm- well, grazed, but you get the point. Useless.

A mother’s love? – Ep 9 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 13, 2013

Is a mother’s love as wide as the ocean, and as deep as the sea? Khun Dara is faced with difficult decisions, should she do the right thing by turning in her child, or should she protect her child despite knowing the whole story- or part of the truth? This episode focuses on answering those questions, as well as finding the culprit who killed Grand Aunt, and uncovering the importance of the ring. The romance story between Korya and Khun Id however, is being shoved to the back burner, teasing us with only a single scene, making me wonder if pursuing this lakorn is even a good idea. Don’t they know that Toomtam and Charebelle is the only reason why I’m watching this? So not fair.

Screen Shot 2013-03-13 at 2.22.15 PM

It is Grand Aunt’s funeral and Khun Dara starts to get suspicious on why Mae Cheun is disregarding Payia the way that her aunt has. She questions Payia on why she thinks Mae Cheun is giving her the cut direct, but Payia simply replies that the old lady doesn’t like her. This makes Khun Dara feel badly- obviously she wants everyone to like her daughter, and is coming to the realization that her daughter is an evil bitch- so she begs for forgiveness from her late aunt, telling her that she knows Payia is not a good person, but that she’s her daughter. Hm. Korya notices Khun Dara is distraught, so she consoles the older woman and tells her that her tears will not let Grand Aunt rest in peace. Mae Cheun begs to differ, she says that Grand Aunt will not rest in peace if the person who killed her is still alive and hovering in Whang Siwalai.

The first gentlemen – M.R. Tharathorn

lovefia

Posted on March 13, 2013

0001

Are you ready for some bromance? The next stretch of our weekend installments is the Gentlemen Jutathep Series (Supaburooot Jutathep), channel 3’s biggest project to date, where 5 producers and directors collaborate to create a period drama about 5 brothers.

The first story of the series is Khunchai Tharathorn (M.R. Tharathorn) starring Grate Warintorn and Pream Ranida, directed by P’Num. Grate plays Khunchai Tharathorn Jutathep, a nobleman who is the eldest of the Juthatheps, and he decides to take on the burden of a promise made by his noble father, who wants one of his boys to marry the lady of Thewapob’s family. He’s a professor, the n’ek is one of his students. Although, about 60% of the storyline takes place in the forest, according to Pream- so I’m not sure how I feel about that- not to mention the subplot of the main girl masquerading as a man. Despite it all, there are elegant and glamorous shots of a period where gentlemen are still valorous, and the ladies are complete with class.

The Happy Ending – Ep 15 Pon Prom Onlaweng

lovefia

Posted on March 12, 2013

Pon Prom Onlaweng or Chaotic Blessings, has brought us a wonderful story about a woman who learns about life through the body of a little girl, and with the help of fate and Dr. Pathawee, she is able to find her way. It’s been a pleasurable and heartfelt ride as a whole, but the conclusion of this lakorn, the method by which things came together, was a bit too contrived and not as genuine as the rest of the story. Yet, the final minutes of this drama makes me look at the drama as a whole, and consider it as a satisfied enough way to end things.

Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 10.22.37 PM

Episode 15 END

Nawin treks through the upcountry to visit his friend Dr. Pathawee. It is beyond him how Dr. Wee can survive in such a rustic lifestyle for a month now. He opens the uncomfortable topic of Tanyong and tells his best friend that she’s getting married in a week’s time.

Dr. Wee pauses at his drink, “You came this far to tell me that?”

“Don’t be tight-lipped, she’s about to get married!” exclaims Nawin.

To love or be loved – Ep 14 Pon Prom Onlaweng

lovefia

Posted on March 11, 2013

If you can’t be with the one you love, should you love the one you’re with? That seems to be the consensus for Tanyong and Dr. Pathawee. One would think that after everything they’ve been through; they would do away with the misunderstandings and insecurities. I mean, Nong May died so that everyone could have their happily ever after. And one episode away from the finale, we get people moping around, uncertain about their next steps. Give me back my Nong May then! At any rate..

Screen Shot 2013-03-09 at 10.19.55 PM

In the previous episode, Tanyong is released from the hospital. She hasn’t seen Dr. Wee since her sweet dreams earlier, so the onset of this episode has Tanyong craning her neck looking for Dr. Wee, but to no avail. This man is like a ninja, he will only be seen when he wants to be seen.

Piram thanks Dr. Neung for walking them out and for all that she has done. He even sends his gratitude to Dr. Wee too. Oh Mr. Piram, even I’m getting tired of your pretentious attitude. Dr. Neung is all smiles, happy that her patient is finally healed, and ecstatic that she’s out of her hair.

The End of Chaos – Ep 13 Pon Prom Onlaweng

lovefia

Posted on March 9, 2013

We knew that in order for Tanyong to return to her body- sparing her life in essence- required ending Nong May’s. But we never knew that this tragic closure to this spiritual chaos could be so heartbreaking. A melancholy episode, wishing farewell to a girl who will never reach her seven years of age, but making peace with her necessary death. For that is the only way the family could move forward, and the only way that Uncle Wee could have a normal semblance of an adult life. Yet death never makes anything easier.

Screen Shot 2013-03-09 at 12.58.11 PM

The tragedy stems from Aunt Prang’s nature of envy. She had hired Khun Methee’s ex-mistress and brother to rob and scare her cousin, despite regretting it and trying to stop it from happening, the damage has been done. Nong May had recognized the man’s face and told the family, upon waking up from her previous threat, that she saw him talking to Aunt Prang.

A family meeting is called and they not only learn the motive behind Aunt Prang, but also her lifelong secret. Khun Prang is remorse and apologizes for her transgressions. Grandma couldn’t believe she is capable of something so harsh and cruel towards her cousin and niece.

Goodbye Grand Aunt, it’s been a pleasure – Ep 8 Summary of Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 7, 2013

Checkmate. A match between Grand Aunt and Payia comes to an end, with a loss that can never be recovered. Although Grand Aunt declares that she would have the last laugh, that she would be the person to unveil Payia’s evil intentions, she ends up being another casualty to Payia’s selfish war. Love Scheme Evil Scheme wants to portray the lengths a greedy person would go to achieve what she wants, especially when she has nothing to lose (except for her life) and everything to gain. Ultimately the silver lining in this drama is the hope that someone would wise up to her manipulations and lies, and give her a taste of her own medicine. At this point, if Payia disappears from the face of this earth, it wouldn’t be a moment too soon. Man-sai-jing-jing! (I’m so annoyed by her!)

Screen Shot 2013-03-07 at 11.56.44 AM

Episode 8

What a heart wrenching episode. We spend the majority of the time waiting to discover the condition of Grand Aunt, hoping that she may recover despite her critical condition. The doctor is not optimistic. But Grand Aunt is such a fighter, even when Nop kidnaps her and tries to kill her at a remote bridge, she doesn’t go down without a fight. She even manages to escape but only to be hit by a truck. So it’s not like Payia and Nop are successful in killing her off, she died escaping- prolonging the inevitable truth, and putting this responsibility onto someone else’s lap.

That lucky person is Grandpa- whose acting is so superb, with his mournful look at the loss of his sister, and his hidden anger at his grandkid, who is not his grandkid – he vows to his sister, before she took her last breath, that he would be the one to pursue the truth, and end this thing. I’m only hoping that it doesn’t mean he’ll be the next to go. Usually when someone adamantly investigates the truth and declares that they will go to hell and high water to right this wrong, they end up dead.

Declaring his love – Ep 7 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 6, 2013

Oh Khun Id, what are we going to do with you? Men, you can’t live with them, you can’t live without them. I would call him “Nong Id” (someone you would refer to as a younger brother) but that would just take away his domineering appeal. I must say though, Toomtam is the perfect fit for the alpha, cave man, to hell with the world kind of main character. Watching his cocky reaction and sometimes sulky demeanor truly does make the lakorn better. Coupled with his chemistry with Charebelle, I don’t even mind that the plot is not all that exciting. I just want to watch Toomtam, oops Khun Id, learn a thing or two about love and that you can’t always control or force something to happen. Should shit hit the fan, don’t say that I didn’t tell you so, little bro.

Screen Shot 2013-03-06 at 1.29.47 PM

Episode 7

So as a brief summary of the key events that took place in this episode, things don’t always go as planned for Payia. She devised for her ex BF Nop to grab Korya while she pretends to drown at the beach in Hua Hin. But Payia didn’t know that Khun Id will be along to distract Korya. As Chisanu carries her soaking body from the waters, she glares at Khun Id’s unfortunate presence.

Chisanu places Payia’s body on the sandy ground and Korya couldn’t help herself by saying, “God must have sent you to help us.” In which Chisanu replies with a comment that makes Khun Id want to gag, “He sent me to help you, actually.”

Star-shaped ring and the plot for blood – Ep 6 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 5, 2013

Is it bad to want to see Khun Id and Korya again and again? This episode didn’t do much in that department, except for the beginning and middle, while the rest of the time is spent learning clues and Payia determining that she needs to get rid of Korya for good, such as kill her or make her disappear forever, which is quite one and the same, really. So I’m just covering the good bits and key developments in this episode.

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 8.30.20 PM

Episode 6

When Korya notices Khun Id from across the courtyard, she is a little shock. Nothing surpasses him. She however failed to see the big smile he gave her the moment they made eye contact. She tries to evade him but he makes her talk to him.

“How are you?” he asks.

“I’m well,” she replies quickly and tries to bypass him.

“I searched high and low for you (I didn’t get any rest while looking for you.) I was so worried about you,” he says, looking painfully at her.

“I’m sorry,” she means it.
