“Fallen” – Nadol’s Perspective in Mam Gam Dang

lovefia

Posted on April 13, 2012

It felt like it was an accident. It happened so fast, freely, out of his control. How did it happen? When did it happen?

All Nadol knew was that it did. He had fallen in love with his sister in law, Ana.

Past tense. The feelings- he was not aware of at the time- occurred in London when he first laid eyes on her, in her previous night’s cocktail dress and disheveled hair. When she shut the door in front of his face. When she toured him around London despite knowing that he was her husband’s irritable older brother. When he became worried of her pregnant conditions. When he became lost with her and grew closer to her- not because they were forced to- but because he got to know her. Until they returned to Thailand where his feelings for her grew even more deeply with time and proximity.

“What’s not to love”- Mam Gam Dang

lovefia

Posted on April 10, 2012

Oh, what a tease.

We’ve gone from London to Bangkok to the island, yet before all of the fun begins, we shall await for Friday.

There are so many reasons to love Mam Gam Dang. It is easy going, funny, enjoyable and utterly silly. Yet it dares to contradict the contrary. Most importantly, I think I have fallen in love with Matt Peeranee. The character she plays, Ana, embodies the ideal female with a weakness that is easily overlooked because she’s so real. The decisions she has made in life are warranted. I get it. She’s a girl you can hang out with, a girl you can call a friend.

Then we have Chakrit who plays Nadol and vindicates why he remains as one of my favorite actors. He’s spot on with his gruff, Neanderthal ways. From the outside there is not much to love- he’s brutal but respectable. Yet deep down, he’s so vulnerable and has so much love to give. We get to see more of his sweet side, which I just about melted.

Mam Gam Dang Ep 1 Impression

lovefia

Posted on March 29, 2012

There are two types of people in this world, people who support themselves and earn a living or people who rely on others to live. In “Red-cheeked Madam,” the social differences between the students studying abroad in London are still evident as you can see struggling college students trying to make ends meet while the richer of their counterparts shop at D&G. Yet, a group of four friends are able to set the differences aside and maintain their close friendship.

They are Ana (Matt Peeranee), May (Woonsen), Art and Pat. Their future rests brightly ahead of them as they wrap up their graduation and prepare for their move back to Thailand. At the end of their final stint however, Pat (the richer of the lot) discovered that his parents has moved forward with his marriage arrangement. Theoretically all of the friends should be happy for him however May had recently admitted to Ana and Art that she crushed on Pat for several years.

Prosecutor Princess – A Review

lovefia

Posted on March 27, 2012

There should not be a shortage of water supply in my neighborhood after watching the entire sixteen episodes of Prosecutor Princess- I’ve shed enough tears to sustain the demand.

Not that I was reduced to sobbing, uncontrollable tears, mind you. It was more that as the storyline progressed, my heartstrings and tear ducks were simply and unequivocally… pulled.

Prosecutor Princess is a story about the transformation of Ma Hye Ri, who blossomed from an innocent, naïve and priority out-of-sorts girl into a savvy and competent prosecutor. The process of her transformation was nothing short of fancy; the cases she was responsible for were not exorbitant; and the events that occurred in order to create the transformation were not mind-blowing. Yet as I watched her grow up, I feel so very attached to the storyline. I soon realized that the development of her character (as well as the rest of the cast) was what grabbed me, hooked me, reeled me in and absolutely will not let go.

But the plot has a twist. It is not a slow and sedentary progression in the plot where you watch Hye Ri become more and more responsible due to her case load. It is the suspense, the mystery of a man- Seo In Woo- who enters her life and forever changes it. What he has done, decided to do and inevitably followed through, changed the dynamic of the storyline. And that my friends, captured my heart.

It is easy to fall in love with the characters in this drama, to understand what ticked them, what made them smile. I have to take my hats off to the writers for creating such full characters. Which immediately forces me to contemplate on how much more lakorn writers must do to improve, but that’s an article for another time. Each has their own strength, targeting their niche market, I suppose.

Let’s briefly talk about the characters.

The Prosecutors: Ma, Jin, Yoon, Chief and two male side kicks. I’ve enjoyed their bickering , gossiping, honesty when they are together. I especially love the Chief as he was hilarious, always discriminating and blaming other countries for any shortcomings. Only child: those Chinese, always having only child, that’s why they’re so spoiled. There’s something about Japanese too. Gah, he was too entertaining. What will he say about Thailand?

The brother-in-law dilemma. It’s really not something anyone wants to be in. But Prosecutor Jin is in love with her dead sister’s husband (Prosecutor Yoon). He was her ideal man. She has loved him even when her sister was alive. Unfortunately he has no clue. We watch her internally struggle with this and waiting until she thinks he is ready. That is, until he notices someone else..

Our princess. She really epitomizes one. But she hadn’t always been like that. Her character, starting so simple and clichéd became so full and wholesome. We understand her background, what makes her tick and what drives her. All in all, I like our girl. I feel for our girl. And so I cheered for her when things finally work out to her advantage. Because like she said, “What she lacks in creativity, she makes up for in imitation.”

But no one else in this drama has compelled me as much as Mr. Mysterious Rich Guy, Lawyer Seo In Woo, most specifically the actor who played him: Park Shi Hoo.

Which leads me to some details on why I love Prosecutor Princess:

  • For starters, Hye Ri’s and In Woo’s first encounter. Both booked the same hotel room, check. And end up sharing the room, check. He then walked in on her as she almost drowns while falling asleep in the bathtub and he sees her naked, check. We got ourselves conflict and attraction.
  • Do you remember my review about Pathapee Leh Rak and that the main reason why I found the lakorn attractive is because the pr’ek is smart? Well, Seo In Woo is brilliant, cunning and completely too attractive for his own good. Those kinds of qualities can get you into trouble. Being too arrogant.. thinking that he will not be affected by his own scheme. Tsk tsk. Boy how that backfired.
  • Which brings me to another reason why I love this particular male lead. He knows the secret to a girl’s heart, or like Hye Ri said to him, “he must have bought a book of ‘a 100 ways to win over a girl.” Either way, he should share that secret or book with the rest of the male leads in any drama. Seo In Woo’s character is just, dreamy: like a Superman who always appears when she needed him. Protects her, advises her and supports her. Even though he had ulterior motives, he had his reasons.
  • And boy can he kiss. The passionate smooch between In Woo and Hye Ri will be etched in my memory as one of the most sincere (real) and on screen toe curling kiss to date! He had disappeared from her, leaving her to cope with the realization of the final case. She had been frantically looking for him. Needing to talk to him. To share with him the secret that she had learned. To tell him the feelings that she had discovered for him. But he was nowhere to be found. One day, when she noticed that he finally came back, her heart pumped loudly in her chest and she can finally breathe. But she knew she had to tell him. In Woo on the other hand, could not resist coming back when he should have stayed away. He knew he had hurt her and he will continue to hurt her. How much more angst can she go through? Then those words, coming out of her mouth.. telling him that she loved him. He’s a bastard. He knows it but he can’t help pulling her into his arms, lowering his head and kissing her with everything that he got. It was a beautiful scene indeed.

From beginning to end, Prosecutor Princess took me on an enjoyable, stressful and liberated ride about two people’s intertwined life and how they will make you feel. Do I recommend this drama? Oh yes.

“Luk Mai.. Klai Ton” – A Review

lovefia

Posted on March 23, 2012

There is an old Thai proverb “luuk mai lon mai glai dton” which means, “the fruit does not fall far from the tree” or the English expression “like father like son.” In this particular lakorn, the old proverb is used to indicate its opposite meaning: the child is very much unlike its predecessors.

Which encompasses the characters and theme of this lakorn quite well, a story bound with family, relationship and social conflicts.

We have Rasa (Suwanant Kongying) who grew up in a struggling family, her mother used to be a maid for a wealthy family and her brother is a no good for nothing son who pesters his family and wife. He also believed that she was adopted because they don’t share any resemblance (appearance or behavior). Upon his constant badgering, their mother’s health declined. Before she passed away, she revealed a dark, scandalous secret to Rasa’s ears: Rasa was the illegitimate child of her mom’s former master, who had raped her and shamed her during her last few days of employment.

A Development on Mr. Rich Guy

lovefia

Posted on March 21, 2012

He’s so mysterious.

For reasons we are not aware of, Mr. Rich Guy is both wealthy and smart. He came from a wealthy family and from the United States (does that automatically make him awesome?) And as a successful lawyer who wins 90% of his cases, he can afford to pick and choose them. What makes him mysterious is his interest in our Prosecutor Princess. I sense there is something else beneath his on-set attraction. He follows both her work progression and life. Either he’s totally in love with her or a high class stalker.

I’d rather think that he has something else up his sleeve.

A look at my second K drama

lovefia

Posted on March 20, 2012

I’m a typical professional who comes home from a crazy day at work and let the television fill the void. I have specific shows that I tune into on specific days, but today happened to be one of those days where that specific show came to an end (at least the season series anyway. Thanks so much Walking Dead..) So I had to find a replacement. Imagine my surprise when I query my Netflix and discover “Prosecutor Princess” available on stream.

Can I request lakorns to be available on stream too? Wouldn’t that be nice? As much as I love YT (the free aspect of it..) I love being able to watch something crisp and clear more. You know, being able to see Nadech’s face on tv and spazz uncontrollably. Well not really anyway as I usually have my significant other peering oddly at me over his remote. But he knows me and lakorns are BFF so he reframes from judging.

Thank you for your vote!

While Buang and Khun Seuk came close, and ‘in-depth review’ trailed by a few votes, it looks like my blog will be Yadech spasm central once again!

Come April (or is it May..) join me in weekly recaps of Torrannee Nee Nee Krai Krong starring Nadech and Yaya, a remake of the ever popular Andrew Gregson and Pok Piyada’s version.

Until then, what say you?

Mook Liam Petch – A Review

lovefia

Posted on February 29, 2012

Although the year has just begun, Mook Liam Petch is a lakorn to be reckoned with and has set the bar quite high for other lakorns yet to air. With its unique action genre and progressive plot, action weary fans or lakorn fans alike, should prepare to be blown away.. or at least be tickled by the pairing and chemistry of Rome (playing Petch) and Susie (playing Mookda).

From the production team Pau Jing Jong, Mook Liam Petch (Pearl Sided Diamond) is a 14 episode lakorn surrounding Special Agent Mookda’s return to Thailand to uncover the case of the stolen Adorella, which threatens not only the number one diamond company in Thailand- Star Diamond- but also national security. She must return the powerful jewelry back to royal hands and at the same time, unveil the true perpetrator behind this devious scheme. Little did she know that in order to accomplish this particular assignment, she must undergo complete character change and risk losing her heart to the very person she may have to put behind bars.
