Word of Honor on My Mind

lovefia

Posted on March 26, 2021

Once in a while, a show comes along and completely takes hold of me. This year, Word of Honor has cemented itself in my heart like its previous counterparts The Untamed in 2020 and Nirvana in Fire in 2019. It was not a slow creep or a one-two punch, it was a complete and utter knockout that I didn’t see coming. And so there I go, falling flat on my back, wondering how I can piece together stray words or wayward thoughts to convey the heavy fall I’ve taken.

Spring Check-In/Hu Ge Tour

lovefia

Posted on May 1, 2019

Hello Dear Readers! Spring is in full sprint. I hope everyone is doing well. I have been neglectful with my writing lately. In the last couple of months, with lakorn prospects looking bleak – since I was only watching Krong Kam (when usually I balance a few lakorns at a time) – I’ve relegated myself to Twitter because it matches the pace of my lifestyle (which is craziness and all over the place!). Twitter allows for quick thoughts and commentaries, and makes it easy to just post a screencap. While that is fun, it doesn’t allow me to edit or really think about the lakorn as a whole. Having said that, I probably won’t be doing the traditional full recaps on the blog, we…

In the ‘Best’ Way

lovefia

Posted on June 12, 2014

Is anyone still alive after watching “In a Good Way?” Some of you might have already patched up your cuts and bruises after watching this show, but I’m still reeling from the ending – or shall we say the open ending – to this Taiwanese drama. So don’t mind me as I pick up the wayward pieces of my shredded heart. Like a knife master, Show knows how to cut me deep and in many unexpected ways. Who knew that a lighthearted romp back in time to 1997 could pack such a punch? We’ve witnessed college students going through character and life changing experiences, all the while  allowing us to fall in love with the Prince Charming Liu Chuan and his relationship with Jia…

The Era of Freedom – ‘In a Good Way’

lovefia

Posted on May 27, 2014

Ah, this Taiwanese drama makes my heart so happy, despite my panda eyes. As you know, I started this show just a couple of days ago, and thanks to the Memorial Holiday weekend (long weekend), I was able to spend some time with this memorable series. I love the slice of life depiction of young adults in this era, the era of freedom, which isn’t too far from the actual events surrounding Taiwan in 1995. Without getting into specific historical events, this show doles out nuggets of wisdom about youth and freedom, friendship and love. Oh especially love. I take my word back regarding Jia En crushing on Ren Wei in the beginning. He was definitely a best friend and someone she shadows growing up. She gets…

Build Your Own Castle – ‘In a Good Way’

lovefia

Posted on May 25, 2014

Well hello there. Let’s go back in time to 1995, year of the Pig. And allow me to wallow in a moment of bliss – Liu Chuan! This Pr’ek, In a Good Way, is the Prince Charming, consorting among the common students of Cheng Dong University campus in Taipei, and being the carefree idol that he is. Top of the class, star basketball player, and coolest guy to crush on? Impossible. But alas it is and believably so since this is 1995, and Prince Charming, at least in dramaland, became something of a rarity and darn near extinction much after this golden year. But who is this Liu Chuan, you may ask? Why, he is the guy that Jia En, our Nang’ek, meets in…

Oh, “Secret Garden” (Korean Drama) – Review

lovefia

Posted on June 14, 2013

When it comes to drama watching, there is no such thing as watching it leisurely, slowly. When you have the beginning and ending in your hot little hands, marathon seems to be the only viable option, sleep be damn. So yeah, I finished Secret Garden in 3 days. I feel a tad guilty, as if I’m cheating on my lakorn world, but that feeling dissipates pretty quickly. Gotta spread the love, yunno. Won’t happen too frequently though, since I have pending lakorn projects on the horizon, and I do value my beauty sleep. But dang Secret Garden was so worth the lack of sleep. I went into this drama series with no expectations, no synopsis or clue what the story is about. Suzsuz thought…

City Hunter (K-drama): perspective from a lakorn girl

lovefia

Posted on June 3, 2013

I completely lucked out on my third jaunt in K-dramaland, sparing a brief diversion from lakorn land, my bread and butter. And when this journey turns out to be a gemstone find, I can pat myself on the back for a good choice and time well spent. Thanks to Netflix, for their crisp, clear and handy subtitles- as well as the director who brought Prosecutor Princess, my first foray into K-dramas- I am able to appreciate City Hunter for all its glory. When it comes to the action genre, I don’t necessarily look for them in lakorns, or expect its endeavor to leave any emotional or minding blowing impact within the lakorn world. It’s just not the nature of the beast per se, and…

October Sonata (Movie) – A Reflection

lovefia

Posted on April 30, 2013

Much in life is timing. October Sonata – (Rak Tee Ror Koy) Love That Waits – did not resonate well in the box office in 2009 – it flopped actually, which is truly unfortunate because it possesses such a gripping script, cinematography and actors. But I believe though, that most of what makes a good movie is that we are watching it at the right moment for us. For whatever reason it did not bode well with the Thai public at the time, but for me, it hits me in all the right places. At the end of the film, I actually went to Mr. A and gave him a big hug. It makes you appreciate that nothing is better than the present, with…

On Call 36 Hours (TVB Drama) – A Review

lovefia

Posted on April 12, 2013

On Call 36 Hours really strikes a chord with me. Perhaps it reminds me of Grey’s Anatomy, the first wonderful season that is. “Hippocratic Crush” is it’s English title, although many have found it silly, I understand the philosophical meaning behind it. The TVB drama series centers around doctors- whether they are interns, residents or specialists- who undergoes Hippocratic oath (and must operate within the confines of Hippocrates medical belief) that they will practice medicine ethically and honestly. They all have a “crush” on such value because they strive to understand what it means to be a good doctor. It is interesting to watch the differences of healthcare professionals in Hong Kong versus the United States, but understanding that there are universal themes and…

Demi Gods Semi Devils- A Review

lovefia

Posted on October 22, 2012

I forget how impactful Jin Yong’s storytelling could have on me. From the adaptations of the Condor Heroes Trilogy in the 80’s and 90’s, as well as the Heavenly Sword tale, these epic series opened me to a world of wuxia; its heroes, heroines, values and relationships. In essence, it molded my young mind and set the standard for excellence in dramas to come. It made me forlornly wished that I could read Chinese so that I may endeavor to read JY’s masterpieces. Yet, witnessing the book come to life certainly has its own merits. I may not know what will happen next, but it makes getting swept by its epic-ness all the more worthwhile. This latest adventure (latest in my book, not reality)-…
