Prik Gup Kleur- First Impressions

High-res version

This lakorn wastes no time with introductions. The first episode opens up with Taywan (Am Sophonpas) conducting Modern Car’s new product launch, Ferrari, to their luxury car dealership. Even their competitor, Luxury Car’s president and newly acquired young wife, came to congratulate them on their leg up in the competition. Where there are severe age gap in marriage, there are contentions. Modern Car’s president’s wife, spoke to how young Luxury Car’s president’s wife looks. But before she could embarrass her further, her daughter, Jid (Pancake Khemanit) the diva daughter of Modern Car, came to ruin the day. She accuses her father and her father’s secretary Rattana, that they were having an affair.

She is gutsy, ill-mannered, spoiled, obnoxious and extremely loud. Even her fiancé, Taywan, could not control her. Jid appears to be in her early twenties, recently graduated from college but has not picked up a profession: she is complacent to taunt people and live her hi-so life. She is a product of an unhappy marriage and a child who feels she lacked in love.

Small Favors- Love in the Fresh Food Market

lovefia

Posted on August 19, 2012

It’s amazing how much fast forwarding I’ve done in this weekend’s episodes of Love in the Fresh Food Market and still have a grasp of what is going in the storyline. There are good and bad aspects of that, good because I get to watch only Thong and Kim-Lang’s scenes, bad because that means majority of the scenes are taken up by side characters and uninteresting subplots.

Silliness and secondary characters do not appeal to me, especially Nada and Chai, whose storyline about revenge and rape takes over the spot light and screen time for our main characters. It is a total miss for me, unfortunately. I’m begging P’Off to go easy on the subplots and give me more meat. I know he wants to showcase the nature of the “fresh food market” business, but it’s such a shame to have Mario and Margie together in a lakorn, and to not make it totally about them.

Because when they are together, they are so sweet. I can appreciate their love story despite how quickly it has developed and their insufficient screen time: at least their misunderstandings and angst are resolved fairly quickly. This is the case because the main problem is not making the two fall in love with each other, but making her mom, Kim Hua, accept them as a couple. And I can see this stretching out until the finale.

It’s an easygoing lakorn, with mild cases of irritable characters that can be remedied by fast forwarding, but it makes me wish the pra’nangs had a larger role in the overall plot. What a waste. We are at episode 8 and despite the exchange of “I Love You’s” between Thong and Kim-Lang, we haven’t seen much in the romantic department. Let’s not be so stingy with the hugs, kisses and the spasm worthy moments.

Maybe they’ll give Mario a better lakorn next time? I know Margie will be working with Chakrit in her future project, so that will be interesting. For the rest of Love in the Fresh Food Market, I shall be complacent to discovering how Thong and Kim-Lang will find their happily ever after, minus the irritating, unreasonable mother, Kim-Hua.

With Mario’s charismatic acting and a better focus on his role in the overall plot, this lakorn could have been so much more. At least Mario and Margie scenes together gives me reason enough to persevere. And then there’s the FF button. I should be happy for small favors.

Hong Sabat Lai, First Impressions

High-res version

Dramatic beginnings for our political thriller “Hong Sabat Lai,” Nay (Janie Tienphosuwan) witnessed the murder of her parents at a very young age and was carted off to Paris by her father’s best friend, a fellow businessman who raised her and instructed her that she must put away the trauma and pain behind her- while her younger brother, Wee or Don (Alex Rendell) was taken under their driver’s wing as his son, living a humble and meager life in Thailand. Fast-forward 10 years; Nay has grown up to be a regal, serious and beautiful woman. She became quietly engaged to Siwat (Art Pasut), her father’s best friend’s son, yet they could not marry until their ultimate goal and plan become realized.

Her father’s best friend, whom Nay regarded as “Uncle,” has devised an elaborate plan to go after the greedy and corrupt man who had murdered her parents. The death of her parents not only represented her tragic past, but it implicated the country’s welfare too. So Uncle contrived for Siwat to run for congress and eventually unveil the bad man’s true colors. However in order to return to Thailand and remain safe from the bad guys, Uncle hired a bodyguard, Rabin (Por Nattawut) to protect Nay. Rabin is not your average bodyguard mind you, he used to be a cop (and very capable one at that) back in Thailand but has lost hope in life as a cop after losing his loved one. He covered up his angst by appearing the complete opposite on the outside, goofy and cheerful, but on the inside, he is tortured and missed his beloved one so.

More than what meets the eyes – Love in the Fresh Food Market

“Let me stop breathing is easier” (หยุดหายใจง่ายกว่า)- Kala
(Ending OST of Love in the Fresh Food Market, Fia’s translations)

I am aware that I don’t have the right..
I don’t even have the hope to think about loving you.
But the more I am around you, the more I fall in love with you.
What should I do, I can’t find my way out.

Every breath I take is you, every minute there is you.
My mind has only you.
How can I stop loving you?
Let me stop breathing is easier.
My heart has a problem, that I cannot control.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t love me, I just want to love someone real, for once.
If I shall be disappointed, it is better than to keep you in the dark.

A dog on the roadside can still gaze at the airplane from afar.
So how am I wrong to think about loving you?
Things that seem unreachable can still be grasped and daydreamed about.
I have a body and mind, is it wrong that I yearn for this?

A moving song that speaks to the star crossed lovers in Love in the Fresh Food Market: about Thong and Kim-Lang, who could not stop falling in love more than they could stop breathing. It is a bittersweet song that leaves me feeling very sad.

But it is a beautiful song nonetheless. Telling a story about Thong, who up until now has pursued Kim-Lang, expressing how much he cares about her, how much he adores her. Their love quickly blossomed behind the scene, and Kim-Lang finds herself reciprocating the feeling- although she is afraid to hope and admit it. Thong in many ways opened up a lot of doors in her heart, the freedom to finally hope. He tells her, as they are sitting at the dock by the pond- their usual trysting spot- that she shouldn’t allow her true feelings to well up inside her. Otherwise, she would only be a shell of a person, operating without a soul.

So Kim-Lang dared to dream, to hope and she soon expressed her feelings towards him by holding his hand and resting her head on his shoulders. He dotes on her, stops by her home, at the foot of the garden to chat with her before she goes to bed at night. To Kim-Lang, he was her knight in shining armor. She, the princess stuck in a tower, a maiden waiting to be rescued, thinks she found her prince in Thong. And she may be right.. but all will not be so easy.

Thong gets a wake up call from her mother, Kim-Hua. This happened after he crashed Kim-Lang’s engagement ceremony, pretending to be a Chinese wedding guru. He was happy to stall their nuptials, doing what he could to rescue her. But he realizes- as Kim-Hua puts it- that he is being selfish. She accuses him of wanting Kim-Lang to himself, to pleasure him and to cheer him on, without thinking about Kim-Lang’s future. Maybe her bethrothed is not the best man for her, but he will be able to take care of her. As a mother, Kim-Hua feels that she could entrust her daughter’s future with the bethrothed. This got Thong thinking whether he is being selfish. If he truly loved Kim-Lang, he should want the best for her too. So he decided to retreat, ignoring her calls. That’s so mean.

But he doesn’t realize that not only is he hurting himself, he is hurting her too- the one person whom he promises that he would hold her hands and they would face the problems together. This is exactly what she said to him, when she finally had the opportunity to run into him again. If it weren’t for coincidence, would she ever see his face again?

My heart goes out to Kim-Lang. The poor girl has so much against her, her mom, the pending nuptials, the market and now, when she thinks that maybe she could be happy after all, she is disappointed. Hurt, yet again. Even though Kim-Lang is painted as quiet and obedient, she is still strong because she had the gumption to confront Thong and call him out. Essentially saying that first he’s blowing hot and now he’s blowing cold! What happened? She is confused and now losing hope.

Thong has become quite a star in the market now, and he doesn’t realize that Kim-Lang was responsible for it. He is ignoring her now, avoiding her because he thinks it will solve the problem. But now that she is a leading lady in his music video, how can he ignore her completely?

I hope he brings back the smile on Kim-Lang’s face again, and in effect, make me smile until my cheeks hurt like they did when he and Kim-Lang are together. I picked up this lakorn expecting to be laughing my ass off, not feeling so much angst!

In the meantime, I’m going to wallow in my sadness with this song, which is so fitting, and look forward to some reconciliations next weekend. I’m hooked.

This Land is Our Land- A Series Review

lovefia

Posted on August 7, 2012

High-res version

Torranee Nee Nee Krai Krong (This Land is Our Land) is a romantic/drama lakorn derived from a book with the same title, the second depiction broadcasted on primetime after the attempt in 1998. Unlike many remakes of its kind, the producer waited for a long time before she partook in this endeavor, until the day she met the perfect duo to cast for Athit and Darunee, the leading characters in the novel. The lakorn demanded a koo-kwan (onscreen sweethearts) that will sweep people off their feet and believably take them on a journey of social ideals, personal aspirations and author’s motives through the eyes of Athit and Darunee. She found her key pieces in Nadech and Yaya, after seeing them in Duangjai Akkanee (Akkanee’s Heart) where they played as star crossed lovers and took fangirling to another level.

After the success of Game Rai Game Rak (Evil Game Love Game), Torranee came as a compelling follow up to Nadech and Yaya’s second collaboration, inducing the fever and fire further for their fan clubs and critics alike. With any hype and anticipation, the question remains if they have done enough to live up to the expectations?

Love in the Fresh Food Market- First Impressions

High-res version

Needing a reprieve from the all encompassing drama of This Land is Our Land, I turned to a new lakorn that promises to be lighthearted, laugh out loud funny and endearing- Rak Kerd Nai Talad Sode- which I will be calling Love in the Fresh Food Market moving forward. This drama is a remake of Andrew Gregson’s lakorn of 2001- needless to say that many of Andy’s lakorns are slowly getting remade like Torranee- this year’s version of Love in the Fresh Food Market brings about a different personality to our leading man’s character, Thong. With Act Art Production and director Off Pongpat (of Roy Mai and Wayupak Montra) along with Mario Maurer as Thong and Margie Rasri as Kim-Lang, this lakorn may just give us a run for our money.

Mario is not a newbie by any means, he is already renown on the silver screen, and debuted on a TV series Plerng Toranong, but surprisingly there is so much more depth to this actor than a serious, cute Plerngrit from Ranong. As Thong, Mario portrayed a funny, fearless and honest vegetable vendor to a tee. The personality he brings to Thong is lively and I feel- the best part about this drama. I find myself tuning into Love in the Fresh Food Market just to see what Thong will do or say next. Not to mention that Mario’s quirky, adorable face makes his character even more appealing.

This Land is Our Land, The Finale Recap

Posted on August 4, 2012

The next morning came all too quickly at grandma’s farm. Vey and Toon approached their prospective partners and demanded their answers. All Athit and Darunee could do is stare at them with pause and uncertainty. This is it, the moment of truth!

As Toon and Athit sat under a pergola, she told him that her mom has just arrived from Australia and would like to meet with him, if he had some time. The three stooges tiptoed through the trees to eavesdrop. Toon continued asking him if he still had any concerns left for the farm? Athit merely answered that Darunee is more than capable to take over his role and Vey can soon help her. Whether he goes or stay, no one will have any qualms. Toon takes his hands and told him to go to Bangkok with her. Athit removed his hands (which made Toon frown) but he stood up and announced to the three stooges to tell Darunee of his whereabouts: he was going to Bangkok with Toon. Upon hearing this, Toon was ecstatic. Tod asked him how long he was planning on being there. Athit replied that he doesn’t know, maybe a year or two or never returning…

His three wives are left sobbing in the corner.

Vey and Darunee are walking along the trees when Darunee asked him if he truly loved her. Vey wondered how she could ask him that and quickly confirmed that he “really” did love her. Darunee asked him if he knew what she liked to eat, what she liked to do.. what she dreamed of doing? Essentially, does he know the essence of her? Vey couldn’t answer. “You don’t know because you don’t think to ask those questions,” Darunee said, “and you don’t ask those questions because you’re not really in love with me.” Vey immediately told her that he does want to know, all’s she has to do is tell him those things, he’ll do whatever she wants, because he loves her.

Calmly, Darunee told Vey that love isn’t simply doing whatever one side wants, it’s both side being involved. Yes, love is in fact a two way street. The understanding, friendship, concern, forgiveness and respect should exist between one another but most importantly, Darunee told him, is the loving kindness and mercy. She turned to Vey and asked him that between everything she has described, has he felt that way about her? Vey stuttered and looked away, and can only say that he have some of those feelings for her. He also went on the attack and said that she must have someone else in her heart that is why she is turning him down. He also knows who that person is but tells her that it is impossible (for her to be with that person) because he is going to be with someone else. Vey, you’re such an asshole, as if telling her that will up any chances with you. Haven’t you heard of ‘don’t slander of the competition?’

Daruneee’s tears threatened to fall but she turned to him and said, “that is the most important aspect of love. You should be happy to see that the person you love is happy.”

Vey looked angrily at her. Darunee excused herself. What maturity on Darunee’s part to not make decisions about her future just to spite someone. She allowed Athit to be with “someone who makes him happy” and not succumb to ruining her own future by marrying someone she doesn’t love.

Athit and Toon said their farewells to Aunt Kaew and Uncle Kreang as they proceed to the car for their journey to Bangkok. Athit looked as if he has accepted his fate. Aunt Kaew asked him if he doesn’t feel sorry Darunee, in which he responded that she has Vey (you’re leaving someone you love in Vey’s hands? I mean if he was capable and can measure up to you, I’d understand.. but you’re so much better!)

The three stooges and the farm workers sat around moping. Darunee walked by and noticed their solemn faces. They told her that Athit has left for Bangkok with Toon. When she realizes that he is gone gone, the sadness hits her and she walks away.

Purposefully striding through the long, dried grasses, Darunee angrily muttered, “you’re just going to leave? Without even saying goodbye?!” Tears streaked down her face. She runs along the hilltop where she sees his car driving away.

At the blossom garden, the car came to a halt.

“Did you forget something?” Toon asked him.

“I really cannot leave this place, Toon,” Athit said.

Her face fell.

“I know that a couple of years is not a long time, but I just realized that at this moment, I cannot even leave this place for a day. I cannot abandon grandma’s land.”

“Because if you leave this place, you’re leaving your heart too, is that right?” Toon asked him.

Athit swallowed.

As they stood in front of the car, Toon confessed that she knew where his heart lies. She has tried to convince herself that he loved her, because well, every other guy is in love with her more than Darunee, so she’s not wrong in thinking that way right? (Omg, wrong!) But Athit nodded his head in agreement. Except, she continued, those men are not him.

Athit still tried to deny it but Toon is absolutely sure that he and Darunee are in love with each other. He is almost shocked at her words. Toon said that he always has Darunee in his eyes and heart.

“I’m sorry,” Athit said.

“Don’t be sorry. I came because I needed to face the truth and to see your face one more time before I go abroad.”

Athit said that he didn’t have that much worth.

Toon wished that she had met Athit before Darunee met him. Athit told her that she has a great future ahead of her. Toon agreed, she said that honestly she’s not really suitable for the farm life, where would she find the time to do her face? He consoled her that she will meet even a better man than him. Toon said she hopes so but it would be difficult because her first love is the nicest and cutest. Athit told her that she is a good person and cute too. But not good enough for him to love, she added. Well, I’m glad we cleared that up!

Athit is saddened by the prospect of hurting her. Because you know, he is the nicest and cutest. Crushing dreams and breaking hearts are not his forte.

Back at the rice fields, Darunee is crying and asking grandma (out loud) if she was there. She told grandma that she would take care of the land in Athit’s place. More sobs escaped her. Then a voice came from the corner and asked grandma if he too could take care of her land. Shocked, Darunee looked to the right.

“P’Athit,” she uttered.

“There was a particular someone who didn’t want me to stay here. And I’m asking grandma if I could stay for another day or two.”

Darunee tried to say something but she was still overcome with tears so she looked down. “And what about Toon?”

“She’s gone,” he said, not taking his eyes off of Darunee.

“What about you?”

He didn’t answer, but stepped closer and wiped her tears away. “Don’t cry, my good person,” he said.

She grasped his hands, “And you’re not going with Toon?” she asked, needing him to confirm.

He looked at her with almost a teasing smile, “I’m going, just not today.”

She turned away with a pout, “since you’re still going to leave, why don’t you just quickly follow her?”

“I need to close out all accounts first and make sure the workers are paid. It’ll only take a couple of days.”

“Thank you for thinking of the workers before you leave.”

Athit inched closer, “when I’m done, you will go with me?”

Darunee peered at him, “yes, so I can congratulate your happiness with Toon.”

Athit looked disappointed at her answer so he turned her body around to face him. “Thank you, Nong Nee.” Oh, he’s such a tease, not telling her the truth.

The workers congregated around the haystack concerned at what is going to happen now that Athit was no longer there. When they saw him walking back with Darunee, they cheered but Darunee told them that he was only here for a couple of days then he would follow Toon. Athit just merely nodded his head, lol. And when she’s not looking at him, he can only look at her with a smile! The workers walked away dejectedly.

At the airport, Toon is crying and Vey is wondering why two perfect people like themselves are heartbroken? He continued to say that the other two people are just farmers so that must be why they turned down hi-so people. Vey then proceeded to let out a cry and Toon looked on with pity. They pass the hankerchief back and forth, lol. This made Toon laugh.

Vilai is furious that Darunee refused Vey’s marriage proposal but Vi convinced her mom to let it go, that just means Vey and Darunee were not soul mates. Vilai blamed everything on grandma, in the end. Her husband stood up with anger, he forbid her from speaking poorly of his mother again. Vilai ran to her room, crying, like a baby, lol.

Back at the farmhouse, on the balcony, Aunt Kaew was confused why Athit didn’t just go to Bangkok if he were already planning on leaving with Toon. Darunee is knitting the sweater for him, while the sun shined down on her face. Athit walked in on time to overhear the conversation and stood by the banister.

“It’s their own business, so I don’t want to intrude.”

“What about Vey? What have you decided?” Aunt Kaew asked her.

“I respect Vey like an older brother. Whether Athit stays or goes, that doesn’t change how I feel about Vey.”

Athit stood by smiling with glee.

“I’ve already refused his offer.”

Athit was so happy with her words, he accidentally made his presence known and started meowing like a cat, lol.

Aunt Kaew is also happy.

Thongprasri’s dad is a drunken idiot and decides to take advantage that Athit wasn’t around the farm.

Athit is playing the instrument for Tawan at the lunch break. The farm workers are depressed and still sad that he’s still going to leave. They begged him to stay but Athit is still closed mouth about his plans, whatever that may be.

Aunt Kaew pulled Uncle Kreang over to see if they could conjure a plan to save the farm. Aunt Kaew wants to give Athit and Darunee a love potion, lol, but Uncle Kreang said that it is sinful.

That night, Darunee finished up the sweater she knitted for him. Athit mischievously smiled and said that in the event that he is her Guardian, he wanted to know how the wedding plans with Vey were faring.

Darunee said that it hasn’t started but they were definitely going to marry.

Athit asked her how she wanted her wedding to be. Darunee said that there are two ways to get married, in the reality or in her dreams. If it were in the reality, the wedding would be at the farm, because she was born and raised here. Athit asked her about her dreams. Darunee replied that she wanted to marry in the sea. She has never been to the sea before. It would give her great pleasure to walk hand in hand with that particular someone. Athit wanted to know who that “particular someone” was. Darunee told him it was Vey but her eyes were saying something different. Athit looked on with a knowing smile.

In the corner, Aunt Kaew was eavesdropping.

Darunee wanted him to try on the sweater she just finished. She helped him into the sweater and Athit stared at her the entire time (ah so cute!) She adjusted the collar and he sniffed her hair. “Who said that you didn’t smell good?” Athit asked her.

Darunee changed the subject and looked shyly away, “it fits well,” she said.

“But does it look handsome too?” he asked.

“Handsome in a way that suits Toon’s beauty,” said Darunee who told him that it will be finished by tomorrow, upon which, would be time for him to go after Toon. Darunee tried to convince him to go to bed since it was dark.

Athit just ignored her comment and smiled.

Aunt Kaew immediately intercepted nervously and said that they haven’t drank her orange juice before they go to bed yet. She made them sit down and promise to wait for her.

At the kitchen, Uncle Kreang gives Aunt Kaew the love potion. She puts a drop into both glasses. She watched the two drinks and forced them to empty the glasses. Then she excused herself to go to bed, lol.

The two went for a walk outside, as they descended the stairs, she peered at the moon and said that she missed Toon. But Athit only stood behind her, smelled her, and looked at her with great need. Darunee spouted how great Toon is and asked Athit if he felt that was true. They’re not truly paying attention to what the other is saying, only in tune with the electric atmosphere. (She said, even Vey was into Toon but she wanted to keep Vey away from Toon. He asked is it because she was jealous? Darunee said it’s because she wanted to reserve Toon for Athit- and asked him if he understood? Athit said he understands perfectly, because she’s his Nong Nee. Lol, they are too cute and speaking about two different things entirely!)

As he leaned down for a kiss, Darunee walked away shyly. I can’t stop smiling!

The three stooges vowed that they weren’t going to let Athit go to Bangkok but Uncle Kreang stopped them in time.

They walked through the orange farm and Darunee continued talking about Toon, she said that he was Toon’s dream man.

Stopping under a tree, Athit said, “I can be anyone’s dream man, but I’d like to be the real man for one specific person. Do you want to know who she is?”

“Who else can it be aside from Toon?”

He looked questioningly at her.

“Don’t tell me that you are secretly seeing someone else!? That will make me mad! Toon really loves you,” Darunee said, totally oblivious with his hint.

“But I want that person to love me more than Toon loves me,” Athit said.

“So exactly who are you in love with? Tell me or I will pinch your nose,” as she reaches to touch his nose, Athit grasped her hand.

“Go ahead, I wanted my nose pinched.” The two look into each other’s eyes.

She didn’t know what to make of his words, not daring to hope. Athit inched closer and kissed the spot above her eye, her nose. She looked pleasantly shocked by his actions. He then kissed her cheek and said the words she was yearning to hear, “now do you realize who is the person that I love?”

He takes her chin and leans in for a kiss to seal the deal, under the darkened night sky.

Beneath the orange tree, he lies on her lap and kisses her hands. “I love you,” he said, “I love you so..”

She beamed at the words that she wanted to hear for so long.

They made their way back to the farmhouse, as he carried her in his arms.

In her room, he said that he could change her shirt for her, it was damp. After she refused him, she told him to go to sleep and he immediately lay on her lap, lol. But she told him to go to bed in grandma’s room because he will be heading over to Bangkok to see Toon the next morning.

Athit doesn’t say anything, he just walks away. But as she prepares her bed, he came from behind her and hugged her tightly. He asked to sleep with her because he was afraid of ghosts. He laid her on the bed and said to her that they’ll have to change shirts, his shirt is damp too- and he goes in for a kiss, laying on top of her.

The morning after, Darunee woke up in Athit’s arms (still fully clothed..)

She asked him why he didn’t go to work yet and Athit said that he wanted to stay with his wife (so I guess the dirty deed was done!) he wanted to hold her all day.

She told him that she would pack his bag so he could go see Toon. (Wth?! You just slept with your best friend’s prospective husband and you’re still handing him off to Toon?)

Ah, Athit has got to be the man with the most “wives” in lakorn history, lol.

Omg, their conversation continues like this (and it sounded so wrong!)

Athit said that she’s doing her wifely duties well (by offering to pack his bags.) But Darunee said the real wife is in Bangkok. Athit asked who Darinee was then, and she said, his sister. His beloved sister? Sleeping with her brother? Disgusting but you can’t help but laugh! Athit asked to “love” his sister one more time and tries to pull her back to bed.

They are still so, very cute together, despite their exchange in dialogue.

Before he left her room he said he understood why grandma wanted him to stay in her room. If he knew this from the beginning, he would have moved in from the onset!

She looked at him with a smile. He told her not to look at him that way or he won’t be able to go work; he embraced her fully and kissed her cheek. Golly they’re so cute!

Darunee looked so happy, even though she knows that it was only for a short while, before he leaves to see Toon.

Back to work we go, Athit evaluated the rice field and said that they would have another week before they would harvest it. He muttered to himself that he has enough time..

Tod wondered enough time to do what?

He asked Uncle Kreang to watch over the rice field and left. Tod wondered why Athit appeared like he’s not in the mood to work. He asked one person to care for the cabbage, the other for the bananas, etc. delegating work as if he was going to be gone for a bit.

I’m curious to learn what he has up his sleeve!

As she packed Athit’s bag, Darunee is saddened by the prospect of losing him. Athit hugged her from behind and was excited about where they were going. He asked if she packed her bags, but Darunee relented that she was only seeing him off. “So do you really intend to see me off and let me be with someone else?” he asked her. “You are so cruel.”

“Who is cruel?” she asked, “what happened between us last night, can you forget it?”

He held her hands and looked sternly at her, “don’t talk like that again. I will never forget last night. Because I have never forgotten us, from the moment we met.”

The three stooges wondered about the turning of events, because Athit never took time off from work.

Back at the farmhouse, as Athit tied his shoelaces, Aunt Kaew appeared and asked rhetorically if he was planning on taking Nee to BKK and have her drive back alone? Athit gave her a peace of mind that he wasn’t going to allow her to drive home alone, even after she has kicked him out of the farm, he was still here. They’ll go on like this forever. This comforted Aunt Kaew and she wondered if Darunee knew? Athit shook his head, which got Aunt Kaew smiling and telling him that he’s so bad (for not letting her know.) She said that Nee was very sad and depressed, had asked her for some medicine to help ease the pain. Athit looked concerned.

Darunee came out, ready to see him off. The three stooges are below the balcony again and Athit overhears them. He noticed the mug of hot coffee and emptied it over the three stooges again. Lol, they never learn!

On their drive, Darunee is quiet. He learned that she might not feel so well (due to the medicine) so he stopped the car to adjust her seat. She thought he was leaning in for a kiss and told him that she doesn’t want to feel worst than she already is (when it comes to cheating, I suppose?) but he laughs and said that it’s probably not wrong to adjust the seat. Before he was done, he gave her a kiss anyway, lol.

Back at the farmhouse, Aunt Kaew couldn’t help but laugh out loud with her pleasure. She thanked him for the love potion. Uncle Kreang said that it wasn’t a love potion, lol, it was merely liquid nectar from the plant in the backyard. He also said that they loved each other for a long time now, they just hasn’t realized it. Uncle Kreang also confessed that he loved and bonded with Aunt Kaew a long ago too, lol.

Arriving not in Bangkok, but at a beach, where crabs crawled and the fresh breeze played with Athit’s denim shirt. Darunee is still asleep in the car. She wakens slowly and noticed the sea. Amazed at the vision before her, Athit asked for her hand. She asked about Toon, and Athit told her that they can talk about that later.

Hand in hand, they walked along the shore. What a sweet and beautiful scene. He stopped her, looking worried.

“There is one thing I cannot stand,” he told her (after saying that there were many things he could handle.)

“It is?” she asked.

“I can’t stand being alone anymore,” he confessed and reached for her hands. “Be with me.”

“P’Athit-“

“Marry me!” He pleaded her with his eyes.

“What about Toon?”

“She’s already aware that this day will come- that I’m asking for your hand in marriage- no one else has any problems. Only you.. what do you say, my good person? Will you marry me?”

Darunee looked into his eyes as the love showed on his face, reflecting the love on hers. She nodded her head, still in shock. He cheered, elated that she said yes. Running towards her, Athit pulled her into his arms and swung her, around and around in his arms.

They held each other with tears of joy. Later in the water, he teased her for swimming funny. She admitted that she has always been on the land, so she doesn’t know how to swim. She held both hands up to swear and he said that one hand is good enough, as he takes her left hand and kissed it. Sliding the gold band into her ring finger. Darunee looked surprisingly at it, as the ring and gesture overwhelmed her.

“With this ring, that may not have as much monetary value as other rings, but I have saved every penny and money that I have in order to obtain it.. for you.”

She looked at the ring and then at him, “this ring may not be expensive but it means so much more to me because it came from your hard work and sweat. I will wear it until I die.”

“Thank you, Nong Nee,” Athit said, “thank you for everything.” He leans down and goes in for a kiss, but she pulled away.

She told him if he could catch her, then she’ll let him kiss her three times. If he loses, he gets one kiss. If he is willing to lose, then he gets nothing. She immediately takes off and he chased her. They frolic in the water with laughter and fun. Athit, trying to grab her lol. Then finally, he was able to lift her in his arms.

At Bangkok, Vey is pursuing Toon, telling her that he could be her personal driver, or even assistant because he knows how she likes her coffee and when she likes it, lol. She told him that he wasn’t her type, he said they should try it out first otherwise they would never know.. she agreed and he’s ecstatic.

Back at the beach house, Athit is drying his hair, smiling at the recent turn of events and his proposal. Browsing through her cookbook, he noticed the flattened small flower that he had given her when she first left for school. Ah, it’s coming full circle! Indicating that she felt the same way about him, a long time ago. He smiled at the knowledge.

Darunee came out of the bathroom and thanked him for arranging everything. He offered to dry her hair. They discussed what they’d be doing back at the farm, as she flipped through her cookbook, searching for the little flower. She panicked at the thought that it was gone. Athit asked her if that was the flower he had given her. She denied it. He said that she must have liked him since that time, because she kept it for so long. Darunee smiled and said that she kept it because it was cute, not that she secretly liked him or anything.

He said that she didn’t need to be embarrassed that she crushed on him. He felt that same way about her, from the beginning. She wanted to know when- and he said that he doesn’t know exactly when, but at the restaurant, when he first saw Vey giving her a hug, he felt already uncomfortable, as if someone was cutting him off, lol. Darunee said that if she knew that was the case, she would marry Vey. Athit told her to apologize this instant, if she says that she won’t do it again, she’ll get kissed three times. If she says that she was wrong for saying that, she will get kissed two times.

“I—“ Darunee started, “agreed that I’ve lost.”

“Then you’ll get kissed everywhere!”

Their teasing turned smoldering as Athit kissed her, everywhere on her face, just as promised.

That evening, Athit brought Darunee to meet his family.

The two participated in a quick ceremony to seal the deal (religiously) in front of Athit’s family. They all gave the two well wishes. It was a sweet moment with the parents.

Vilai finally gets a wake up call from her husband. That morning Vey asked for their permission to study abroad- and in a different field. She thought he had always wanted to be like his father. But her husband told her that because her son loves her very much, he was willing to do whatever to please her. She not only controlled his future, she controlled his feelings for a long time. If she went back look in the past, she should realize that Vey hasn’t done anything to displease her. This brought tears to Vilai’s eyes as she realized that she needed to love him as much as he loved her. She needed to let him go and be himself- to grow into himself. They hugged and cried. That was a sincere scene.

Back at Athit’s hometown, they signed their marriage certificate. Legal! Upon looking at the certificate, Athit realized that his father just advanced in his position. His father wished them well in their marriage and future endeavors together.

Athit and Darunee came to see Toon off. Their relationship is fraught and awkward, with the one man they both loved in between them. Darunee feels badly but Toon apologized for thinking only of herself. They discovered that Toon would be studying abroad in Australia, where her mom lived and she may stay there forever if it suits her. She encouraged Nee to have a baby soon so she could come back to visit. They hugged it out as their friendship, essentially, will never be the same again.

Vey appeared and told Toon that he booked a flight together with her and will be going to the same college. She said that it was a good thing, so she can order him to get her a coffee. Vey knew exactly how she liked her coffee and has arranged everything for them, lol. They turned out to be a cute couple.

Athit and Darunee watched on with bittersweet happiness, as Darunee rest her head against his shoulders.

They finally arrived back home, at the farmhouse and are met with a final hurdle. Sintorn was causing an uproar and trying to convince all of the farm workers to work abroad- in a different country. Everyone will be paid handsomely if they went. This scene comes back full circle to grandma, and what it means to the farm workers to work there. Can Athit and Darunee sustain the land that grandma had left for them? Along with the workers?

Athit appeared and asked how he has taken advantaged of the workers?

Sintorn is flustered. Athit explained how they were like family, he has treated all of the workers like his brothers and sisters and they work together to keep the farm going. He’s not stopping them from leaving, but he wanted them to think carefully, that being a farmer may not be a rich or glamorous endeavor, but they will always have food on the table and doing what they love. Reiterating his own passion about agriculture.

Athit also said that no matter how rich you become, you’d still eat rice, from the farmers who grew it. The workers agreed and all chanted their approval.

He wanted to know if it was worth it to get the money when you would have to leave your family and land. People don’t die because they don’t have enough, only people who are greedy. The workers began considering how much they would lose by leaving and decided it was best they stayed. Darunee spoke up as well, that they needed to work together.

It was decided that whoever wanted to stay at the farm with Athit and Darunee, they would follow their footsteps. And they did.

Vilai came to see both Athit and Darunee, with regards to will #2. Vilai hasn’t recanted, she’s still nasty and Vi had to calm her down. She kept insinuating that Athit was after grandma’s inheritance. They agreed that next month they will open the second will.

In grandma’s room, Athit wondered why Darunee looked so down. Darunee worried that if grandma hasn’t left any inheritance for her in the second will, would Athit stop loving her? Athit didn’t want to hear her say that. He said that grandma has left the inheritance in Darunee all along, grandma has taught her to be a good person, manners etc, so he felt that he has gained so much more than money. He also believed that they could create their own inheritance (meaning land, future etc.) with their own hands. Darunee thanked him.

In their room, they opened a box that Toon left for them. Darunee said that it was a dress that Toon intended to wear to her wedding with Athit. Darunee opened the letter that was addressed to them, that Toon hoped Darunee would wear this dress as she stands with Athit on their special day. Darunee shed a tear as she thought about her friend. Athit held his wife in his arms to comfort her.

The farm is in a flurry of movement, everyone pulling their weight to improve the farm. Even Thongprasri’s family are involved and it’s a pleasure to see everyone making peace.

Athit, Darunee and Tawan played in the farm, while the workers watched on with happiness.

Thongprasri and her husband are back in town and wanted to take Tawan back. Darunee was saddened and she reluctantly hands Tawan over to his mom.

And the reading of will #2 commences!

Grandma’s cash gets dispersed evenly among her offsprings and grandkids. She was also generous in giving each farm workers money too. Some of the profit coming from selling the fruits would go to educating the farm worker’s children.

As for Athit and Darunee they would receive all of the land that grandma has. If they can’t agree to care for it together, they could sell all of it and split the profit.

Vilai gasped, shocked- because all of the land didn’t go to Darunee as she has expected, but split evenly with Athit.

Back at Vilai’s house, she’s crying and fuming with the “injustice” of it all. Her daughter and husband shook their heads at her state. Even though she received a lot of cash, she was still pissed that Athit and Darunee got the land, which equates to so much more money than what they got. It’s funny how her daughter lectures her on how she could focus on her own strengths and create her own wealth. She needed to stop focusing on seeing other people’s downfalls. This cheered Vilai up and she couldn’t wait to start the new business with her daughter.

At the vast expanse of Athit and Darunee’s farm, they met with the workers whom they had helped given birth to. Athit asked her if she was ready to have her own kids soon. She warned him that she would pinch his nose if he keeps talking like that. Athit wanted his nose pinched, lol.

Darunee couldn’t help but miss Tawan after see little “Darunee,” the little girl whom the farm worker named after Darunee. Athit said that it was an easy problem to fix; they should start reproducing little Tawan- five or six of them! She said that was too many!

“You don’t want to see what they look like?”

“Nope!”

“Well I do!” Athit chased after her, calling her his grand aunt again.

They found their way back to grandma’s gravestone. Kneeling before their late grandma, they thanked her for loving them and entrusting the farm in their care- the land in which she has created with her own hands.

As they walked arm in arm, Athit asked Darunee if she knew why grandma didn’t assign which farm land goes to whom?

Darunee doesn’t know.

Athit admitted that he didn’t know either but just learned from Aunt Kaew that grandma wished that they would end up together. She wanted them to marry and take care of the farm together.

“And now we have done what she wanted us to-“ Darunee started.

“With great pleasure-“ Athit added.

They smiled at each other, and Athit couldn’t help but ask her, “and are you doing this willingly as well?”

He kissed her forehead while she thought of an answer, and held her close.

Darunee became wise with her response, “grandma intended for us to think that this land is our land, because we all plant and farm so we can work and provide a living. So we can support ourselves over time.”

“Over time,” Athit added “we have enough to share with our fellow people.”

“We need to send this message to everyone, especially people who are close to us.” Darunee said.

“The people closest to us would be our kids and grandkids. You should help me think about how we can have many kids and grandkids. To make this world beautiful.”

She shyly looks away while he holds her from behind.

He asked grandma to help him but then answered that grandma won’t help, she told them to help each other.

“Can I ask for your participation? My little grand aunt?” Athit asked Darunee.

They looked into each other’s eyes as Athit dipped his head down to kiss her. He examined her face and pushed a hair strand out of her face. Arm in arm, they walked through the garden.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

We are given a poignant story about two people’s intertwined lives and taken on a journey to watch their character blossoming and their love growing. A sweet finale with no rocks left unturned (well maybe a few things, but will divulge that in a review later), we still get a sense of completion and resolution.

We can now close this last chapter of Torranee Nee Nee Krai Krong- This Land is Our Land, with a big sigh, the happy and satisfied variety.

I thank you for taking the time to read, comment and go on this journey with me-as we watch Athit and Darunee have their happily ever after- leaving us nostalgic for the past time they had together but excited for their happy and fruitful (albeit make belief) union to come.

Enjoy the beautiful, spectacular moments in the finale:

Maya Tawan it is! (And some character-plot analysis)

lovefia

Posted on July 30, 2012

Thanks very much for voting and inputting your voice! It was a close race between Qi Pao and Maya Tawan, going neck to neck and MT winning at the last minute. But don’t you worry, since we have no idea when it’s airing anyway, I’ll still have some time to recap other lakorns. I will be tuning in to lakorns that are listed under “Definitely,” and as you know, if any one of these lakorns draw my attention, there will be some sort of recap/impression articles to follow.

As you might be aware, Maya Tawan is a remake of Sam’s lakorn, a very popular one to boot, in its time. There were many aspects of it that I absolutely adored and empathized with, so allow me to share with you the gist of the lakorn (from what I remember) and what I thought made it so special.

Sam was a hot commodity and actor who has played very snooty characters in his prime. So his role as Tawan was a perfect fit. The theme of the lakorn is “from rags to riches,” because Tawan grew up in the poorhouse and then became a famous actor. His upbringing was traumatic and he has many skeletons in his closet. However, acting was merely a means to an end for him (making money) so he ventured into designing exclusive, sought after women’s clothing instead. Because of this, he became a bit of a recluse, and preferred to spend his time at his beach house. Like any notorious celebrity, he despised reporters- just because they like to dig up old, bad history.

But it just so happens that our nang’ek (Matana) is a reporter and through her growing up phase, she had crushed over Tawan. Upon learning of a gossip that linked Tawan to his models for prostitution, Matana was assigned to unveil the truth. The first step obviously, was to obtain an interview, which was one of the biggest obstacles for her because Tawan has never granted anyone an interview, ever. A bit of a character personality assessment on Matana, she was a clutz: clueless: a dork but totally adorable. She lacked self-confidence, always thinking that everybody is hotter than her, lol. She epitomized the girl next door. So upon meeting Tawan, she would never think that she had any chances with him because he was her former idol and was always surrounded by hot woman every day.

The conflict in their love story surrounded his inability to trust reporters. So it was compounded when Tawan and Matana developed a strong affection (ok, let’s call it love) when she became severely ill in front of his beach home and he took her in (yes, he’s human!) It was funny how stubborn Matana was, camping outside of his home until she became sick enough to be in his care. Can you imagine what happened when eventually he got to know her and decided that she was different from other reporters? Well, he was later proven to believe she was just like the rest of her scheming counterparts (not in her own doing of course), so how will their misunderstanding/conflict fare? You shall tune in to find out!

The female lead that played Matana was very relatable, she played the clumsy, naïve girl very well- and she’s not gorgeous- well, not in the league of Yaya Urassaya- so the character is believable. Now in this new adaptation, I don’t believe there is any way to mask Yaya’s beauty, so this role as Matana could be a bit of a challenge for Yaya, so I am looking forward to seeing how she portrays this character. As for Aum Atichart on the other hand, I’ve no doubt about his ability to play Tawan, only how he would add to the character.

Num Sornram will also be starring in this remake, as the bad guy, Tawan’s nemesis. Most fans of Num’s may feel put out by this latest endeavor, but I’m indifferent to Num (only because I felt that he has grown so far from the actor image he used to portray “back in the day.”) He is a great actor, so with his veteran skills, along with Aum’s awesomeness (if that is even a word) we may have a killer lakorn in the making. But you know, let’s not count our eggs before they hatch.

So, will this Yaya-Aum pairing work? The age difference is believable because Tawan-Matana has an age gap, but can Yaya and Aum bring the sizzling, electric yet funny interaction as Sam-Matana (I forgot her name) brought on screen? This remains to be seen but you can be sure that you will find detailed recaps on this blog, just as soon as it airs!

Decisions, decisions- Ep 15 Recap of This Land is Our Land

lovefia

Posted on July 29, 2012

Realizing that the feelings he had for Darunee refuses to be suppressed- the snakebite scene only confirmed his feelings for her – Athit changes course and makes some move. But Darunee is relentlessly tiresome with her attempt to bring up Toon in every waking breath- but when the tables are turned and Athit is paying her the attention- she loses her wits around her. Until they both are reminded (again) of their internal battle and must make a decision of who they’ll spend their lives with. More conjectures from yours truly at the end of this recap. For now, enjoy!

—

Darunee finds herself explaining to Toon that she was misunderstanding Athit regarding Thongprasri and her son. Toon questions Darunee’s motives however, because it took her two weeks to reach out to her- does Darunee want to make sure Athit could survive without Toon first or not? Darunee emphasizes that she has tried to call her but Toon did not pick up her phone. Soon we glean a little more about Toon’s background. In all honesty, when Toon had some time to ponder what had transpired, she was not angry with Athit or Darunee. She admits that she left the farm rashly and without a second thought because she was angry at herself- back when she was a child, she recalled her father leaving her and her mom for another woman. From then on, she had promised herself that she would not do the same to another child. When she was confronted with Thongprasri, she couldn’t handle the fact that she has become someone she despised.

And she was willing to hear Athit out if he would come to see her in Bangkok. Darunee promises to talk to Athit and reiterated how happy Athit would be to hear this.

At the farmhouse, both Athit and Aunt Kaew wondered where Darunee disappeared to when she wasn’t working at the farm or at the house. Soon enough Darunee reappeared and told them that she had just returned from Bangkok after chatting with Toon. Athit could only look on with surprise while Aunt Kaew blew out an exasperated breath. Darunee told Athit that she was tired of seeing him working without his heart so she thought to bring “his heart” back to him. Looking so severely pleased with herself. Athit asked her what Toon thought about all of this and Darunee replied that she could only soften her resolve because the story with Thongprasri wasn’t true. Athit looked relieved. Darunee took out a picture of Toon and told him to embrace it all night and tomorrow morning, he could go and hug the real person. Aunt Kaew, disgusted with the scene before her, left the room. I would have done the same thing.

But that night the atmosphere in the living room became charged and their awareness of each other increased. Darunee is knitting something while Athit is working on paperwork, but he can’t seem to focus because his attention kept going to Darunee. Aunt Kaew walked in with glasses of orange juice and asked her what she was knitting. Darunee told her that it was a sweater and offered to make it for her. Aunt Kaew encouraged her to give it to Athit instead because he doesn’t have one. Darunee said she would need to measure him first and as they both stood before each other, they became aware of each other’s proximity.

She loops her arms around his waist with the measuring tape and Athit looked shyly away. Aunt Kaew was enjoying the spectacle before her. Then Darunee measures the width of his back, the length of his arm, and she turned him to face her and measures the size of his neck, whereby, they are caught in a mesmerized and shy gaze at each other.

The two dispersed back to their seats but the lingering awareness remained as Athit peered at her from his notebook (it’s upside down lol) and Darunee looked back at him with a smile. When he looked at her again she was gone and he glanced around for her, only to realize that she had moved to sit next to him and peering over his shoulders. She said that he must have been working so hard because he’s reading the notebook upside down. Darunee said he could go to bed and she can take care of the books since he needed to wake up early tomorrow to see to Toon. She hands him Toon’s picture and tells him to have a sweet dream. But Athit could only accept the picture, and looking at her shyly as if their time together would be the one to give him sweet dreams. Cute! He doesn’t look too excited about the prospect of seeing Toon again, lol.

Darunee smiled on as she watched him walk away but her smile soon faded because she remembered that Toon would like to have a family with him and make lots of babies. Don’t forget, she harped to herself, their (Toon and Athit’s) happiness is her happiness.

In Bangkok, Vey visited Toon with a bouquet of flowers. They were going to have dinner but she turned him away because she needed to wake up early the next morning. Vey learned that she needed to get ready because Athit would visit her tomorrow morning. The door shut in his face and he cursed Athit again.

As Athit was walking back to the worker’s quarters, through the orange trees, he looked at Toon’s picture. Meanwhile, at the farmhouse, Darunee was spouting how tomorrow Athit and Toon would reconcile and he will be happy again. Aunt Kaew said that she was getting real tired of Darunee- Athit was really happy being with her! Exactly Aunt Kaew! It’s tiresome. But Darunee was convinced that she spent the most time with him and she always sees him working- she figured that he was working hard so he doesn’t have time to think about Toon. Inside, he could be crying. Aunt Kaew rolled her eyes. She said that people who are meant to be would end up together. Darunee agreed (misunderstanding that Aunt Kaew was referring to Toon and Athit and not her and Athit) and said that even if two people are taken apart, they would find their way back together. Aunt Kaew emphasized with a huff that if two people are not soul mates, then they could never be together.

Through the dark pathway, Athit turned around to look back at the farmhouse. But a large, scary cobra peered by his footstep, ready to pounce. The minute Athit took a step forward; the cobra reacted and bit him, unleashing its venom. Athit yelped in pain and fell to the ground; two bite marks appeared on his ankle. He called out Darunee’s name as he howled in pain. Darunee heard his voice and ran to him. She found him on the grass, where she immediately tied her scarf around his calves and proceeded to suck the venom out of his ankle- Athit told her not to, it was dangerous but she didn’t listen as she spat out the blood from her lips. Athit suddenly passed out, which worried Darunee as she pleaded for him to be conscious. She instructed Aunt Kaew to have Jingjaew get Uncle Kreang and they would carry Athit back to the house. Aunt Kaew couldn’t help but pocket Toon’s picture that was lying on the grass.

Uncle Kreang examined Athit and told them that he has cleaned the wound and applied some medicine. They would need to keep a close eye on Athit and make sure he gets enough rest. Aunt Kaew relented that it would probably take 2-3 days for him to heal but Uncle Kreang said it might just take a day or two, which angered Aunt Kaew, lol, because she wanted Darunee by Athit’s bedside to care for him. Also, she didn’t want Nee to take Athit to Bangkok and see Toon the next day.

Darunee towel washed Athit’s body to keep his temperature down. Then to keep him dry, she lathered powder onto his chest and changed him into a shirt. He slowly awakened and she asked him how he was feeling. He thanked her for always being by his side whenever he was sick. She replied that it was all right, she just want him to get better. Athit asked her why she decided to suck the venom because it was very dangerous. She told him that she didn’t have time to think whether it was dangerous or not, she simply did what she could to remove the poison for him. Athit reached for her hands and held it, “were you afraid that I would die?” he asked her. Darunee responded that she didn’t want anything to happen to him, otherwise the workers and the farm would suffer and whom would she find to work in his place?

Athit smiled, “I see, so you have to take very good care of me? Including towel washing me, powdering me and changing my clothes?”

Darunee looked embarrassed, “well your temperature was high..”

“I’ve never been sick and feel so good about it. Thank you, Nong Nee.”

She shyly tucks him in and took the washbasin back to the kitchen.

Athit looked at her with a smile.

Morning came and Darunee was making breakfast for Athit but Aunt Kaew came in time to relieve her so she could check on Athit’s condition.

In Athit’s room, he’s stirring awake and gets up. After examining his leg, he noticed how powerful Uncle Kreang’s medicine was. He was able to walk and stand. Just then, Darunee opened the door to his room and asked if he was able to walk now. Athit faked a pain in his leg and she comes running to assist him. Awe so cute! He told her he was trying to go to the restroom, and Darunee scolded him for not asking for her help. He felt that she took care of him all night and wanted to do a few things on his own (sure) but Darunee said that next time, he doesn’t need to feel that way, she will help him. That’s when Aunt Kaew walked in and she saw Darunee holding Athit. They both explained that she was helping him into the bathroom. Aunt Kaew wanted to kick herself for interrupting their cute moment.

Darunee walked Athit to the dining room while Aunt Kaew crumpled Toon’s picture in her hands. As Athit sat down, Aunt Kaew presented the crumpled photo and mentioned she didn’t know who would do something like this (lol.) Darunee suspected it was Aunt Kaew’s doing and insinuated it, Aunt Kaew looked away guiltily. Athit didn’t seem to care too much about the state of the photo.

While Darunee was working at the production house, she immediately calls Toon to let her know what had happened to Athit. Toon begged to come take care of him at the farm. Darunee agreed and thought it was a good idea.

The scene where Vey stood waiting for Toon to notice him was funny. He said on the count of three, if she doesn’t turn around, he would move on from her. If she does turn around, that means she may have some feelings for him. But she did not turn around at the count of three, she noticed him after that and comes running to ask him to take her to the airport. She wanted to go see Athit. Vey was disappointed once again.

At the farm, Darunee was managing some of Athit’s task. While she was at the rice field, Tod asked her how Athit was doing. Uncle Kreang was there also when she told them that he’s doing better but still needs help walking around. This made Uncle Kreang wonder why when all of the other workers who used his medicine were able to walk the next day. Tod smiled and surmised that it didn’t have anything to do with medicine; it was more of someone’s intentions on getting Darunee to assist him. Darunee became flustered and denied it because she thinks that Athit would want to get well soon so he could see Toon. Which makes me really think that she’s still so stuck in her head- does it need to be spelled out to her?

Vey is driving Toon to the airport but he’s taking his sweet time. Frustrated, Toon took matters into her own hands and grabbed the steering wheel- which is a really stupid thing to do- and they almost hit a motorcyclist. As he slammed on the brakes, she rammed her wrist and head against the dashboard accordingly.

And Athit is finally making his moves towards Darunee- hallelujah! I hope he starts realizing that the more she keeps pushing Toon on to him, the more he needs to make her realize that the one he wants is her!

During lunch, Darunee caught him walking and he immediately pretends that his leg hurts again. She noticed that Aunt Kaew was nowhere to be found (since she’s making sure the farm workers had food to eat) and Athit told Darunee that he had to prepare his own lunch. His sad puppy face at the prospect of eating alone was so cute. As Darunee scooped some rice onto his plate, he touched her hands and asked if she would join him for a meal. The three stooges were eavesdropping at the floor below and keep murmuring how fake (and cute) Athit was being!

Darunee of course brings up the fact that she has called Toon and explained about his condition. She told him that Toon would be making her way here so he could get well soon. Athit quickly avoided further mention of Toon by appeasing her and saying yes. Then he looked into her eyes and said, “Some people may help make me heal faster. But the person who makes me want to keep on living and refuses to let me die like last night, is you, Nong Nee.” That is so sweet!

Nee could only look at him with a touched smile.

“Do you know that everything you have done for me is very meaningful to me? It makes me want to continue breathing, so I can wake up and see you everyday.”

The three stooges all made puking noises, lol. I’m totally enjoying what I’m hearing, it’s about time!

Aunt Kaew appears with a washbasin full of water so he could towel wash himself. Athit looked surprised at first but decides to use it to his advantage. He walked slowly over to the window and throws the hot water onto the three stooges who ran away scalded and screaming. Darunee helped him back to his chair and they proceeded to eat, he cannot take his eyes off of hers! Golly, when they look at each other, yours truly just simply, well, spazz!

Back in BKK, Toon is hospitalized with a brace on her wrist. She and Vey argued the whole time, Toon blaming Vey that now she can’t go and see Athit. Vi happened to stop by and noticed their bickering back and forth and she smiled.

Darunee walked Athit to the patio and he asked her if he could go to the farm too, he wanted to help. But Darunee told him that he needed to wait here for the nurse- indicating Toon. Athit looked at her and said that he’s not sure what is the best way to say this- but he wanted to thank her for everything that she has done for him- then he has a hard time getting the words out- he could only say I, I… Darunee interrupted him and said she knows that he can’t get the words out. But he said that his wound itches! Lol. She had him sit down and she pulled a strand of her hair to scratch against his wound. And they had some really cute moments looking at each other.

He begged her again to go to the farm with her, promising to only stand still and cheer the workers on. Darunee finally relented.

The teasing between the three stooges and Athit was plain hilarious. The scene where Athit was trimming a stick, Uncle Kreang finally caught wind of his leg pain. Darunee relieved Athit of his job and he walked slowly and painfully towards Uncle Kreang. Once there, Uncle Kreang acknowledged that Darunee is a hard worker and very dedicated, any man would be lucky to have her. Uncle Kreang asked Athit if he wanted to be that lucky man? Athit said yes without realizing it, then Uncle Kreang teased him that he can stop pretending that his leg hurt then, lol. Athit looked on guiltily and smiled while he watched Darunee.

At the strawberry farm, Athit was adamant that he could help out. She asked him why he wasn’t at home waiting for Toon, she should be here by now. Athit told her point blank that he’d rather spend time with her! Darunee looked at him with a surprise look on her face. (I’m sure she liked hearing that too!) Athit realized he said it out loud and covered it with, I just wanted to work. Darunee said he could take a few days off – and Athit asked her if she was afraid that he would die? They looked at each other all embarrassingly. Instead, Darunee said that she was afraid Toon wouldn’t want to marry him for the rest of her life, and she walked away.

Toon is at the hospital bossing Vey around, Vey told that no woman dared to tell him what to do except for his mother- but he abided by her wishes anyway.

Back at the farmhouse, Darunee is assisting Athit with his walk. He clearly enjoys her holding him, lol. When he sat down, Darunee suddenly blacks out for a moment and falls but Athit catches her in time as they stood eye to eye, she in his arms. Ah, so cute! She excused herself to wash up. As she walked away Aunt Kaew and Tawan stopped by and teased Athit for his leg “pain.”

Darunee is not feeling well. As she enters the rest room, she feels lightheaded but continues to disrobe and takes a shower. But she couldn’t get her wits around her and faints, hitting her head against the bathroom floor. Athit walked into his room in time and hears a thudding sound. Concerned that something happened to Darunee, he rushed into the bathroom and found her naked, on the floor. He grabbed a towel, puts it over her body and carried her to bed. Once there, he tucked her in bed and removed the towel from around her body. He is so worried about her when he wiped her forehead and dried her arms. Darunee muttered grandma in her sleep that she was cold. Athit piled more blankets on her and rubbed her hands. Then she utters his name in her sleep, which surprised him and he blew into her hands to warm her.

Darunee finally wakes up and notices Aunt Kaew sitting beside her. She wondered what had happened. Aunt Kaew explained that she worked hard all day in the sun and when she reached the cold shower, she became shocked and fainted. Aunt Kaew said that luckily Athit heard it and rescued her in time, otherwise she’d be cold and her condition would worsen. Darunee realized that would imply that he has seen her naked! She looked at her shirt, and Aunt Kaew confirmed that Athit dressed her. Darunee freaked out and said how will she face him the next time she sees him? She hears him knocking on the door and pretends to sleep, embarrassed.

That night she came out for a drink of water, wanting to know if Athit was around. She couldn’t face him just yet, still embarrassed. But little did she know that she would embarrass herself further. Aunt Kaew told her that Athit had to see to a farm worker and won’t be back until late. As Darunee talked, Aunt Kaew walked away to fetch her a pitcher of water and Darunee didn’t realize she was talking to herself. She said that Athit is only a few years older than she and had to take over grandma’s responsibilities to watch over the farm and its workers. If she could help him any way, she would. Athit walked in on time when she said that she would like to help him for the rest of his life. The words touched him as he peered over her shoulders and said, really? Darunee turned around with her cheeks red, embarrassing herself once again.

“You’ll help me for the rest of your life? Promise?”

She looked up at him, “I promise. But you must promise too that you will let me help you forever, even though you may have Toon by your side.”

“I promise,” he said, “this is a promise between us.” They pinky swear in front of grandma’s picture.

Aunt Kaew is standing on the side, giddy. Notice how he never brought up Toon..

But of course Darunee blows the bubble. She said that she would call Toon and find out what happened because she hasn’t shown up yet.

Vilai caught wind that her son was getting too close to Toon so she stormed into the hospital room and demanded that Vey finalize the engagement with Nee. It’s funny to see Toon standing up to Vilai, giving her back what she got. Toon was in a hurry to return to the farm and to receive an answer from Athit. Vi, who apparently became wise after finding Dharma, asked Toon why she was going back to the farm, when both of them (Toon and Vey) are fully aware.. Vey interrupted his sister to inquire what she was talking about. Vi continued that if they weren’t blind, then they should have noticed how Athit and Darunee truly feel about each other.

Vey and Toon look at each other with worry. Toon explained that Nee was adamant that she and Athit were only brothers and sisters. Vi relented that Toon knew full well in her heart that it is not true. Whatever the case may be, Vi confirmed that Toon should know now and needed to think about it. She further explained that it’s really a simple ending to this story, everyone just needed to open their hearts and accept the truth, that is all. Amen! Toon said that she was sure that Athit loved her and will choose her. Vi just looked at her with a scoff.

In her room, Toon thought more deeply about the interactions between Athit and Darunee, especially Athit’s actions. It goes to show how much he cared for and considerate to Darunee.

The following morning, Toon showed up at the farm but Athit doesn’t look too excited about seeing her. This time around, the atmosphere is different. When they’re sitting at the dining table, Toon tells everyone that she’s planning on studying abroad in Australia for two years. She would be willing to forgive and forget if Athit would follow her there. They could get married there or come back to Thailand for the wedding. Aunt Kaew said that it’s too long and he wouldn’t do it. Athit and Darunee looked at each other back and forth. She’s giving him a night to think about it. Darunee could only look sadly back at him but tries to force a smile.

In comes Vilai- she also wanted an answer from Darunee about the wedding- she would get it tomorrow morning as well. Athit doesn’t look pleased about hearing this. So yes folks, we have a deadline!

At the worker’s quarters, Athit thought about what Vilai and Vey has said to him in the past, voicing his insecurities. Then he thought about the rough conversation he had with Darunee a couple of episodes ago. As for Darunee, she too thought about Athit. They both have said that their happiness lies in seeing the other happy, why not just be together and consider it done? They both are thinking about obstacles that aren’t really there- just in their minds! By the way, I felt that they don’t need to have these flashbacks; they’re wasting precious lakorn time!

Toon spoke out loud, “I love P’Athit the most. You do know that, right?”

Darunee tells her that she knows.

And we take a step back from our progress..

The sun is rising, casting beautiful orange and pink colors in the sky. Athit stood on the patio watching the sunrise and he noticed Darunee walking by.

“You’re up so early or did you not sleep yet?” Darunee asked him.

“I had a lot on my mind and couldn’t sleep so thought to come here and watch the sunrise,” he said. He turned around and walked to the bench. “Take a look. No sunrise anywhere else is as beautiful as grandma’s spot.”

“You speak as if you’re trying to remember this image, is it because you are not going to be here any longer?” Darunee asked him.

Athit turned to her, “I want you to remember this image too, because not much longer, you will leave this place too.”

“Yes, I’ll probably leave not much longer than you.”

“I used to tell you that I would never leave this place-“

“Don’t be stuck with your words if your mind wants to leave-“

“Nong Nee! I’m not the type to rescind my words! I will only leave this place if the people here no longer want me around.” As if he’s waiting for her to tell him not to leave.

Darunee looked at him with tears in her eyes. Toon watched them from afar.

“I don’t want you to stay here. You should leave. P’Vey and I will take care of this place,” said Darunee.

Ouch. She must go there.

Athit’s eyes are swimming with tears, hurt from the words he was already expecting.

They both do not mean the things they say to each other. Toon notices this.

And that wraps up episode 15 for us. I feel a little frustrated at this teeter-totter of emotion that we’re being put through. Just when I felt that Athit is going after her and showing her that he didn’t need Toon, that he wanted Darunee- we get a setback. They’re both confronted (yet again) with the same obstacle, Toon and Vey, and can’t seem to get pass that point. But this time around, we are not at a total standstill- we are given a deadline and an ultimatum. Athit and Darunee needed to make a decision by tomorrow morning whether they choose the other person or not. With the ending of this episode, it appears that they are choosing the “other person.” Although we all know that they just want to be happy, together.

I’m thinking the director will throw us a bone soon, to help with the dilemma, because Toon is starting to realize that Athit does not love her and if she truly loves him and Darunee, she needed to step aside. Maybe she will be the one to get them together because god knows Darunee will never cross her friend. And that makes her (Darunee) the most frustrating person in this lakorn to watch, despite how beautiful she is.  They both need to sit down and have a heart to heart conversation! But no, this is a lakorn so we must have a lot of unspoken emotions and desires. And it can’t be realized until a third party gets involved, like secondary characters. Because apparently the pra’nangs cannot come to their own conclusions! I’m really just venting about lakorns in general, not so much this specific one, although this one has reminded me of it.

At any rate, next week (our finale week) we’ll be getting what we want, after all. There will be reconciliation and more sweet scenes to come. Episode 16 indicated that Darunee and Athit would be frolicking in the beach, teasing and laughing. They will go through a final hurdle regarding the farm and its workers as well as the reading of will #2. I believe the finale is split up between a full episode for episode 16 (Friday) and a brief closure in episode 17 (Saturday)- followed by the premiere of Rak Kerd Nai Talad Sod starring Mario and Margie.

I simply cannot wait to see the beach scenes and their happily ever after, as bitter sweet as it may be, since I don’t want Torranee to end. What about you, what think you of this weekend’s episodes?

Good riddance and a revelation (in the making) – Ep 14 Recap of This Land is Our Land

Posted on July 28, 2012

Toon realizes her dream man is not so perfect after all and isn’t willing to accept so she leaves. Athit mourns his heartbreak but realizes he’s not all that heartbroken after all. Darunee on the other hand, feels plain sorry and responsible.; she gets even closer to him to recant. And we have a beautiful revelation in the making.

—

“Does this (ring) have an owner yet?” Toon asked Athit as he examined the ring on his pinky finger.

“No one would want an invaluable ring like this,” he replied, examining his crafty work.

Toon tells him that it is valuable to her because he made it with his own hands. He considered her face and asked her if she really wanted it.

“Yes, please give it to me,” she said.

No, please don’t.

But he slides it off his finger and takes her left hand and slides it into her middle finger.

She throws her arms around him; he smiles lightly and hugs her back.

“Thank you,” he said, “for loving a normal person like me.”

They stroll down the orange farm and saw Darunee working. Toon immediately shows off her new, DIY ring.

Darunee’s face fell when she sees it, and only to be worsen by the comment Toon made, “It’s an engagement ring that P’Athit gave me.”

Athit looked panicked at the words but doesn’t deny it.

“Really? Who is engaged with whom?” Thongprasri’s voice intercepted their show, walking in hand with her son, Tawan. Darunee stands up with a panic.

“Athit and I are,” replied Toon with a smile.

“You shameless hussy!” Thongprasri spat, ooh, never thought I’d say this but I do like you Thongprasri, you’re my new hero!

Darunee runs up to Thongprasri and demands her to leave and take Tawan with her.

“No!” Thongprasri said, “I’m not going anywhere.”

“I’m confused, what’s going on?” Toon asked, looking at Athit and back at Thongprasri for an answer. She faced Darunee, “Nee, who is this woman?”

“You dare ask who I am? I am Athit’s wife!”

All three faces turned to her.

“Is that true?” Toon asked Darunee.

“Don’t listen to her!” Darunee relented, begging Toon with her eyes.

“Khun Nee!” Thongprasri yelled, “you know what’s what. Yes, I’m not good, I’m aware that I’m not suitable for Khun Athit, but why must you bring your friend here to steal my husband?”

That’s when Athit stepped in, “leave this instant.”

Lol, but Thongprasri doesn’t stop there, she threw her arms around his middle, “Husband! You’re going to leave your wife and kid for that girl? What kind of a person are you?” she referred to Toon, “you’re pretty and all but you can’t find your own husband?!”

Toon is shocked and keeps asking what is going on. She looked at Athit for confirmation, “do you really have a wife and kid already?”

“Yes!” Thongprasri answered for Athit and she grabbed Tawan’s hand, “And this is Tawan, he’s mine and Athit’s son.”

Toon’e eyes grew larger, disbelieved.

Athit is trying to remove Thongprasri’s arms from around his middle. Toon looked reluctantly at Darunee, and finally ran away. Darunee follows her.

“How much more are you going to destroy my life?” he asked Thongprasri. But in this instant, Athit, I disagree; she’s only trying to help!

Athit is still thinking about his son and being a responsible father. He picks Tawan up and gives him to Tod to care for the moment. He turns to Thongprasri to scold her without Tawan witnessing it, “Don’t let me see your face again. If I see you again,” he warned, “I can’t promise to remain still- go!”

He runs after Toon.

Toon runs into Darunee’s room, sobbing and replaying the scene in her head as well as other scenes of people were trying to cover up that Tawan was Athit’s son.

Darunee is at the door, pleading to explain everything to Toon. But Toon can only ask why Darunee set her up for this.

“I didn’t mean to lie or hide anything from you, I was waiting for the right time,” Darunee explained.

“And when is the right time?” Toon asked, “Would that have been on my wedding day?!”

She has a point..

Athit came to the door as well, “Please open the door for me. Allow me to explain.”

“No, just leave!”

“Not everything the woman spouted was true-“

“Then what part of that is not true? Tawan is not your son?”

“I am his father but-“

But she wouldn’t let him continue, “I’m never going to get in between a father and his son! Get out!”

Athit looked warily at Darunee, probably more sad because he was the one to hurt her.

Toon cries on the bed, all her hopes and dreams going out the windows.

Well darling, you don’t even know all of him prior to being heads over heels in “love.”

Aunt Kaew and Thongprasri meets up after the event, she tries to give Thongprasri money but Thongprasri refused it because she was indebted so much more to grandma. But Aunt Kaew admonished that this will prove to show whether Toon truly loved Athit or merely sprung. Thongprasri relented that the “truth” isn’t really the “truth.” Aunt Kaew continued that if one side cannot accept the truth from the start, then their lives together would be doomed.

Athit is sitting at the patio of the farmhouse, beating himself up (hypothetically speaking.)

“Take it easy P’Athit, Toon is just hurt right now. Let some time pass and I will explain everything to her,” Darunee consoled.

“I had thought you already told Toon about Tawan and Thongprasri.”

“Well- I didn’t want you to lose your form, so I didn’t tell Toon.. it was my fault,” Darunee admitted.

Athit told her it wasn’t her fault, it was his- he must have committed some sins in his past life to have so many disappointments now.
Darunee feels terrible, “don’t give up, Toon is a reasonable person.”

“I hope that is the case. I’ll wait here until she cools down,” he said.

“I’ll sit here with you.”

Aunt Kaew watched this and made her way to grandma’s room to apologize for her behavior. She just wanted to help them along because it will make everyone happy. She didn’t know whether Toon is a good or bad person, but she knows that Darunee is a good person, that she loved the farm, Athit and everyone here. Kaew wholeheartedly believed that Athit loved Darunee too. If she were wrong, it would only be meager, right? She’s taking one for the team, lol.

The three stooges all felt badly for their boss and wondered if the future bride would forgive the future groom.

In Darunee’s room, Toon is packing her bags. Aunt Kaew came in with a glass of juice and asked why Toon was crying. (Nice- she pretends like she doesn’t know.)

Aunt Kaew digs in a little more and Toon tells her that she’s going home and to not tell Darunee or Athit.

Back at the patio, Aunt Kaew learned about what happened earlier from Darunee. Aunt Kaew pretends to be offended and Darunee said she would ask Thongprasri what the heck overcame her when she had no right to do this. Aunt Kaew panicked and told her that she didn’t need to look for Thongprasri, she had came over and dropped Tawan off and will be staying with her husband in a different province for a month.

Darunee wanted to see to Toon for lunch but Aunt Kaew told her that she had already left.

“What do you mean (she left)?” Darunee asked. Athit stood up and walked over to them.

“Well she asked me to find her a driver and to take her to the airport. She’s gone by now.”

This surprised both Darunee and Athit and they raced down the road, hoping to catch her before she left, but the car had already disappeared around the bend.

At the airport, Vey is also there, preparing for his flight when he hears someone sniffing behind him.

It was Toon who was heartbroken, remembering how she met her prince charming, her one sided love at first sight and their scenes together.

Vey finally turned around and realized it was Toon. She turned to her side and wiped her tears.

Vey asked where Darunee was, since they were always together. But this caused Toon to cry even more. He didn’t know what to do when he saw her crying.

Athit went to grandma’s gravestone to talk about his problems.

“You once told me that love is a pure and most beautiful thing that humans have for one another..”

Darunee walked in on time to hear him say, “but why does a love that is pure and beautiful destroy us like this? Can you give me strength?”

She walked to his side and kneeled down, “We should follow Toon.”

“We’d better not,” he said, “If she can’t accept me today, she wouldn’t be able to accept me tomorrow or any other day.”

“It’s not that she cannot accept,” Darunee said, “it’s just that she misunderstood.”

Athit stands up, “I’m not sure if Toon would want to hear me out. If she was willing to do so, she wouldn’t have left like this.”

“But if we try to make her understand-“

“Nong Nee,” Athit turned around, “there are slight differences between trying and knowing when to walk away. I choose to embrace the pain than to be the cause of anyone’s distress.”

Darunee held his hand to comfort him: Athit looked poignantly at her. Golly, the way he looks at her… the eyes say it all!

At the farm, all of the workers wanted to know how Athit was doing. They asked Aunt Kaew and they contemplated that he was heart broken somewhere.. lol but he’s standing behind them and asked if they didn’t have any work to do? Our heart broken man.. is not so heart broken after all! He told him that if he were not near death (or at death’s door) he would not stop working. His responsibilities are much more important than his feelings.

When the workers dispersed, Aunt Kaew told him that she was happy that he wasn’t hurt to the point where he couldn’t work. Athit said that he is hurt but life goes on. He can’t make his problems be everyone’s problems. He can only hope that one day she would be willing to hear him out and understand him.

Darunee had been listening to their conversation and stepped out of the trees when he walked away.

Life after Toon goes on as normal to Athit, one cannot really tell that he is heartbroken. But he doesn’t smile as much anymore and the three stooges try to make him smile. Gosh, their dog show was hilarious. He doesn’t pay them no mind, but Darunee watched him from afar and was sad that she caused so much strife in his life.

During lunchtime, Darunee and Athit sat before a tree, on a picnic blanket. Athit was quiet but he glances at Darunee a few times, looking both pensive and slightly uncomfortable, Darunee just feels badly in general about everything that had transpired. They have a silent lunch and Darunee continues to watch him work, work and work to the point that she couldn’t stand it anymore and calls her best friend, Toon.

Toon doesn’t pick up.

Days go by and Darunee brought him lunch at the orange farm. He could only look poignantly (I know, it’s that word again, but it’s really poignant!) He has always had a deep feeling for her that he cannot explain, even if he’s hurt and sad, she stuck around and consoled him, always there for him. He dared not think but he can’t help but express everything in his eyes. Before he could thank her, one of the workers called her over. He could only watch her interact with them.

It’s daytime in Bangkok when Darunee approached Toon at her home.

Toon turned around when she heard her name. She looked apprehensively at Darunee.

“I won’t take much of your time, I’d like to speak with you,” Darunee said.

And we are cut short for episode 14!

Tomorrow’s episode finds us at the threshold of Toon returning, willing to forgive him under one condition: she will be studying abroad for two years and wished that he would follow her. Vey would be requesting Darunee’s answers regarding their pending nuptials. Finally in the dark of the night, amidst the farm trees, Athit takes a step forward. He said to Darunee, “I can be anyone’s dream man. But I want to be a dream man in real life to only one person.” Nee looks at him and he continues, “Do you want to know who that person is?”

I’m raising my hands, I do! But I have an inkling who that person is..

Tune in folks, to Ep 15 tomorrow!
