Although Khun Chai Ratchanon, part four of the Gentlemen Series is fast paced and has a relatively good plot, I don’t find it resonating with me on the level that the second and third part did. Allow me to explain why.

The stakes are definitely higher, the plot thicker, but character development or even relationship development is surface level, lacking depth. We know Khun Chai Lek is adorable, playful and doesn’t take many things seriously- in exception to when he was forced to be engaged to a woman he hardly knew, and he hightailed out of town- but character wise, we haven’t gotten to the flesh and bones of his character. His relevance in this story is a catalyst to meeting our heroine, the Warrior Princess Soifah who lived in hiding from the Wieng Phu Kam soldiers with her village, and must find a way back to their home country. In order to resurrect the throne, Soifah must find the Crown Prince in Bangkok. And in order to keep her relatively safe, her father (who is the King and is withholding her princess status from her) marries her off to Chai Lek due to her “compromising” state with the nobleman. Stone, meet three birds.

City Hunter (K-drama): perspective from a lakorn girl

lovefia

Posted on June 3, 2013

I completely lucked out on my third jaunt in K-dramaland, sparing a brief diversion from lakorn land, my bread and butter. And when this journey turns out to be a gemstone find, I can pat myself on the back for a good choice and time well spent. Thanks to Netflix, for their crisp, clear and handy subtitles- as well as the director who brought Prosecutor Princess, my first foray into K-dramas- I am able to appreciate City Hunter for all its glory.

When it comes to the action genre, I don’t necessarily look for them in lakorns, or expect its endeavor to leave any emotional or minding blowing impact within the lakorn world. It’s just not the nature of the beast per se, and so when they attempt action, it comes off trying too hard to be cool. That’s why I tend to dabble in sappy romcoms or slap-kiss lakorns, because that’s their best work.

But City Hunter, oh my, as one whole package- the slick action, intrigue, romance and drama- hits me in all the right places. It has a compelling and poignant father-son conflict, adorable yet wistful romantic love story, and such ass-kicking action scenes, I am struck (or swept for that matter) with awe. Throw in thematic arcs, ideologies and superhero backdrop within a brooding atmosphere; it is just so cool.

“Taking care” – Reflections on Ep 4 Khun Chai Ratchanon

khunchailek

I like Chai Lek, I think he’s adorbs. But seriously, the boy can’t go around telling every girl that he’s going to take care of her. I mean, what does he mean anyway by taking “responsibility” over someone’s life? Typically in the lakorn world, the word is misconstrued as “marriage.” So it’s easy to see that Soifah misunderstands his meaning.

She had been grounded by her daddy to stay in her room for 7 days and 7 nights. But her concern gets the best of her, so she jumps down her bedroom window and makes her way to check in on Khun Chai, who had saved her from a trap and got his forearm scratched up. But as she veers the corner of his stilted house, she spots him sitting down with Jantha who had already tended to his wound. Jantha is in the process of asking him about the condition of her father, not realizing that the man had already died days ago in the forest by Wieng Poo Kum soldiers.

With regret and utter sadness, Khun Chai takes Jantha’s hands- it’s a form of how he comforts people by touching them- and he breaks the news to her that her father’s dead. He lets her lay her head on his shoulders for a moment until she collects herself. Khun Chai feels guilty and remorse over her father’s death: because if he didn’t embark on this adventure in the forest, her father wouldn’t have died. But he also should recall that he saved Jantha and her dad’s lives from those Wieng Poo Kum soldiers at the restaurant as well. But Khun Chai is not the type to tally his good deeds. He tells her that he wants her to come and stay with him, that he would take good care of her. No No NO! Don’t give the girl hope. But Khun Chai is a responsible and nice guy.

Hey show, have you heard of stick with what you’re good at? You’re so good with the romantic drama part of this show, why don’t you just do away with the action or plot or whatever you’re trying to convince that you’re good at? Those words that are coming out of Sama’s mouth- professing how much he cares about Waree- daaang, those are some good words. Keep it up! *Swoon*

Waree tries to tag along with Khun Sama on his retaliation against Nai Dij for ambushing him and hurting his right hand man, Pipat. She wants to tag along not to get a scoop and not because she’s a reporter- but because she is worried about Khun Sama’s safety. Heh, the first sign of genuine concern for our hero. But his left hand man assures her that he’s got his boss’ back and she would only distract them.

At the gambling house Nai Dij is unsettled at how difficult it is to eliminate Khun Sama. A gunshot is heard nearby and the sound petrifies the gamblers as they scramble. It is Sama and his bodyguard, penetrating the exit crowd with guns in the air. When he said that he has his method of dealing with Nai Dij, I guess he means an eye for an eye. Badass.

Khun Chai Ratchanon – The Gentleman and his Warrior Princess

The three previous sweet installments of Supaburoot Juthathep series paved their way for Khun Chai Ratchanon, a romantic adventure lakorn centering on the fourth Aristocratic brother, Mom Rajawong Ratchanon Juthathep (aka Khun Chai Lek), a civil engineer who opts to station in Nong Khai to avoid matrimony with Sineenuch. He is second to the last chance that his noble grandmother could fulfill her son’s sacred promise to his friend. This time around she is more determined to see it through, and thus evoking a higher stake (and much desperation) for this story.

But Khun Chai Lek is a man who prefers to create his own path in life, thank you very much. Even though he is an easy going, flirtatious (the notorious rake) and goofy to boot, Khun Chai Lek doesn’t believe that any woman could capture his heart. Until fate and his excursion through the mystical forest of the Northeastern Province brings him toe to toe with a feisty, strong willed, slip of a woman named Soifah, and he is a goner.

Towering at 6’2, Tanin “Bomb” Manoosilp plays Khun Chai Ratchanon, his debut drama alongside skilled actress Taew Nataporn as Soifah. In this Act Art production, we are given a meatier plot, an adventurous undertaking, and a different love story than the previous Juthatheps. One must stay alert, do not blink, because you don’t want to miss the connection between the various subplots and characters. In essence, we are given a new playing field, one that allows this lakorn to be anything but boring.

The Interview

Outside, the rain is pouring against the window pane, but the inside offers a cozy, intimate environment for the interview. Waree is in a state of excitement, for she has been waiting for a few days now, cooped up on the island, waiting for the right time to interview Khun Sama. After all, to him, it’s all about timing. But Sama is in a different state of mind, anxious and not at ease, he is about to reveal his life to a young reporter whom he found a connection with since she was a child. It’s not easy divulging the past filled with pain and rejection.

“Let’s go ahead and start,” Waree encourages him with a smile, clasping her hands together.

“I am willing to let you interview me, but I ask that there will be no voice recordings,” Sama starts.

“Why not?” Waree questions, how is she going to remember all of the details?

“In my line of work there are a lot of trade secrets, it’ll be best if I can eliminate any traces. I don’t even want my picture to be featured.”

“I understand it is because you are Jao Phor (of this island) you must be especially wary, are you satisfied now?” Waree says with exasperation.

Sama takes her voice recorder into custody. He has her pack of cigarettes, now her voice recorder, what next? Her heart? Hehehe.

Mon Jantra Ep 2

Ep 2.1 Mon Jantra: Khun Sama is such a tease

The smooth boat ride brings Sarawaree to the shores of Koh Yanok, a quiet and private island belonging to Khun Sama. Her first experience with the inhabitants of said island is the opposite of warm, the assistant Pipat and housekeeper Lampang are aloof and uncaring, not to mention highly protective of their boss. But who needs a large welcoming party when you got Khun Sama’s attention all to yourself? Where do I sign up?

Waree peers around the spacious living room of the island’s mansion, she had questioned Pipat earlier if Khun Sama had accepted any proposition to film lakorns on the island, but Pipat snidely tells her that his Khun Sama values his privacy and that just hosting a reporter is trouble enough. It appears the people around Khun Sama likes to tell her what Khun Sama prefers and how strict he is. Funny thing, when the man appears, he is rather flirtatious, giving, and easy going with an air of intensity.

Khun Sama approaches her from behind, as she observes his living room.

“Koh Yanok welcomes you,” he says, flashing her a handsome smile.

Waree returns a half smile, “I am happy to accept your hospitality.” If it is the one and only she’s gonna get.

Simply Irresistible – Khun Chai Puttipat

lovefia

Posted on May 20, 2013

kcp1

In hindsight, the powers that be (channel 3 elders that is) are probably kicking themselves right now. They knew that the weekend prime time lakorn, Khun Chai Puttipat, is in the hands of Paajaew, a more than capable director. They also knew that the storyline and script will appeal to the general public; it is after all based off of a book series, and had been received pretty successfully. But they had no idea that the combination of the aforementioned, along with a budding actor and his chemistry with his costar, could culminate into something so irresistible. It is too late to request an extension, too late to supply the demand.

But that is one of the reasons why I like Channel 3, and why I think this particular lakorn is so darn cute. Perhaps they knew all along that they have something special on their hands, but unlike channel 7, they don’t always air it before the lakorn has finished filming nor will they extend it just for ratings or air time. Channel 3 in this effect, has fueled the fire (and fever) for a character (Khun Chai Puttipat) and his actor (James Jirayu) to fans who can’t seem to get enough.

Mon Jantra (The Moon’s Enchantment) – Ep 1

“I will build this casino if it kills me. It is my dream.” – Khun Sama

“This dream of yours, it is a sinful business that will encompass your life causing infinite pain and death to others.” – Sarawaree

The title song only intensifies the conflicted relationship between Sarawaree and Khun Sama.

How do you expect me to love you?
When in my head, I can never forget
The problems that keeps me up at night
I fear it will be the same
How could I love you?
When the past will only worsen if we remain like this
If you really love me, prove to me that you are confident.

Wow, if this intro is any indication, we are about to have us an intense romantic drama!
