[Open Thread] #27

Posted on August 11, 2017

How are you, dear readers? It’s been awhile since we had an open thread to discuss our well beings outside of this wonderful world of lakorns. In the past week me, along with residents of Washington, are suffering from smoke emanating from the wildfires of British Columbia. It happens to be one of our hottest summers (with long days of sunshine) since the 50’s, and yet, we can’t even see our blue skies. Last weekend was my last week of maternity leave and it seems like God didn’t even want me to enjoy my remaining days off. So I am back to work, commuting along thick grayness, where there used to be a few mountains or skyscrapers to enjoy. My kiddos are doing great, although one does not sleep, leaving me in a perpetual state of sleep deprivation. But he’s cute and I’m stocked on caffeine, it’s Seattle after all, you can’t drive five minutes without seeing a Starbucks.

Leh Lub Salub Rarng – It’s Electric

Posted on August 2, 2017

Has it been since The Rising Sun Series since we’ve seen Nadech and Yaya on screen together? That is too many years too long, if you ask me. But they’re back to win our hearts in Leh Lub Salub Rarng (which isn’t a hard feat if I’m being honest), it is a body swapping lakorn about alpha male Captain Ramin and beloved Pearl of Asia Petra Pawadee. It is action meets comedy meets gender reversal. When we first meet them, you’ll love to hate these two because of their spoiled brat, conceited and selfish tendencies. And at first you’ll wonder why our leads are unlikable, and yet despite how unlikeable their characters are, Nadech Yaya’s portrayal of them comes out hilarious because it’s so opposite to their own personalities in real life. This lakorn is a treat for NY fans, but to those reluctant viewers and those looking for a good story, this one is for you too.

What I’m Watching: Kammathep Prab Marn

I’m finally caught up with the remaining episodes (up to 6) of our final installment of the Cupid Series. This lakorn will end this weekend with 8 9 episodes. Perhaps a more apt title for this show ought to be Return of the Exes instead of Defeating Love since everyone and their mom’s exes will make an appearance. I felt that this show has smart characters, great looking cast and just beautiful directing and OST, and I’m obviously still sticking around to find out what happens with our Boss-Secretary couple, but it lacked the addicting factor for me. I kept going back and thinking about Hidden Love, which is still one of my favorites out of the series.

Charebelle and Navin Tar in Fun Ruk Fun Salai

I noticed a teaser for tomorrow’s evening drama, Fun Ruk Fun Salai, and found the lead actress familiar but couldn’t quite put my finger on her name. Then I realized it’s Charebelle! She had played in several OneHD shows and will be featuring for the first time with Navin Tar and Ch.3 (albeit evening show) in an action drama lakorn that centers on an immigrant woman who enters Thailand to escape to America for a better life.

Kammathep Prab Marn – Defeating Love – Episode 1

Posted on July 8, 2017

We are closing out the Cupid Series with Defeating Love, featuring the big boss himself, Khun Phim (Ken Theeradeth) and his feisty secretary, Waralee (Chompoo Araya). The unique thing about this couple is that we have seen their relationship throughline teased throughout the seven parts of the series. They are forever bickering until Waralee could no longer stand to work for her boss and quits. Though Boss does take some time to grovel, he earns her back at his side and realizes how much she means to him. In his words, she means the world to him. The problem is, he can’t quite confess that to her. As we all know, Boss is a proud and stubborn man, even apologizing to Waralee required some kicking and screaming. So it comes as no surprise that the biggest confession of his life is going to require lots of coaxing and time. Unfortunately, as this first episode is quick to point out, time isn’t exactly on his side.

Do you ever wonder if your lover, son, nephew or competitor is gay? Worry no more, because with the right amount of money, you can hire a team of spies who will find the proof for you and avoid any confrontation. Nangfah (Patricia Good) knows all too well what it’s like to be tricked by a gay man, after all, she has dated them since grade school and was fooled in every relationship. After the altercation at the gay bar, Nangfah gets fired and blacklisted at all advertising agencies in the city. Desperate for work, she decides to call on an advertisement on Pantip seeking a spy to unravel potential gay people. Nangfah promptly creates her own company.

Posted on June 27, 2017

As the Cupid Series come to a close, with its light and sweet taste of love to celebrate another one of Channel 3’s milestones, we will be greeted with a stronger dose of savory love in the latter half of 2017- and the lakorn lineup has gotten me so excited, I can barely contain myself.

The channel hosted Perd Gong Wic 3 ‘Move Forward Three Gether’ and released some of the highly anticipated lakorn teasers. I am happy to say that my anticipated lakorns have made it on the list!

Sorn Ruk Kammathep – Hidden Love- A Review

lovefia

Posted on June 22, 2017

The ‘does-not-like-men’ lakorn trope is one that I really love watching. I am a sucker for these and if someone were to tell me that a show has a heroine who is a man-hater, I would more often than not check it out. I am curious not only to see how the backstory is constructed, but how the heroine’s thought process is changed throughout the show. For the sake of the age-old man-hating argument: all men are bad- can the show prove to our heroine that not all men are bad? It may seem like such a simple obstacle, in that she would just need to meet a man who changes her mind, and that may be true, but Hidden Love, Part Five of the Cupid Series, proved this argument wrong in such a thoughtful and careful way, no stones were left unturned. It is for this reason that I close out this seven-episode lakorn with such a therapeutic, rewarding feeling.

James Ma and Margie in Arkom

lovefia

Posted on June 13, 2017

James Ma is back on screen since his portrayal of Dr. Sattawat in When a Man Loves a Woman– which made me want to pull my hair out no less – but I was still excited to see his face. Arkom (Magic) is a story about James Ma’s character that comes back to life after a deliberate bomb that hits the airplane containing his whole family. A mysterious sorcerer not only gives him a second chance in life but also teaches him magic in order to seek retribution on a group of rich men who are complicit in the murder of both their families. It’s very much similar to a superhero type storyline where the hero has another identity and hopes that friends and love interest from his ‘previous life’ don’t recognize him or complicate his revenge plan.

‘It Must Be Fate’ – Tricky Love

lovefia

Posted on June 6, 2017

Oh this is cute. The pairing of Tono and Nychaa is really working for me. I took notice of Tono since the Star 6 competition but never followed his work on OneHD. The sixth story of the Cupid Series, Tricky Love, is his first foray with Channel 3 and I’m glad he took on the rugged but kindhearted dentist named Saran, even though at times, it seems like he’s in a different lakorn entirely. While everyone is in a romantic comedy, Saran seems to be in a melodrama. Cue very sad music. We can blame the poor editing on the director I suppose, because the tone of the show can seem all over the place, and the writing is rather weak, but Tono brings intensity to what could have been a very boring character. And his chemistry with his costar Nychaa? That makes taking a chance on this lakorn a worthy one.
