Happy Friday

lovefia

Posted on July 7, 2011

I know, I know, it’s Friday and where’s my “Dum Kum” review? Let’s just say that I got distracted. That seems to be the keyword these days. How is it that it’s taking me more than a month to watch this lakorn? That’s unacceptable.. it’s not that it’s not good, because it is, a million of other things just get in the way.

So instead, this week I finished “The Help” by Katherine Stockett, which I wholeheartedly recommend reading. I also watched “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love” starring Mario and Fern, this movie will pull at your heartstrings, and I watched it twice.  “Tard Ruk” gained some of my time as well, it’s nearing the climax and the truth is finally coming out!

The rest of the time in between is spent trying to learn Bahasa Indonesia, because I am in Jakarta. That lasted about five minutes every day. I’m sure if I’m stranded in another island where they don’t speak English, I will pick up the language much faster. But why learn another language when I can use my time trying to finish Dum Kum?

Have a wonderful Friday and fabulous weekend everyone!

Taweepob (1994)

lovefia

Posted on June 29, 2011

Mae Manee.. Mae Manee ja.. the familiar voice whispered her name in the dead of night, almost as if her dream conjured up the voice. Manee Jan (Ann Siriam) is a modern woman of 1994 who has not realized that fate, in the form of a mirror will take her to her soulmate who lives some hundred years ago. Khun Luang Thep (Tua Saranyu), a well mannered, traditional man in every sense of the word never realized that a mere woman from the future will aid him in his patriotic endeavor and be his life partner. Both knew not of one another, but goes through life in their prospective times as if waiting for someone.

An antique mirror acts as the connecting door from Manee Jan’s world to Khun Luang’s world. It is its own entity, calling her, demanding her and only allowing her to visit either worlds on its own accord. If Manee Jan missed or refused the calling, she would develop a severe physical reaction. It seemed as though only she was privy to the mirror’s callings.

The Week Ahead

I really meant to post this on Monday, so the title would be appropriate, however, I was caught up with watching two lakorns at the same time.

Dum Kum- Pong and Tangmoe

Taweepob 1994- Saranyu and Ann Siriam

How does one go from Dum Kum to Taweepob, you may ask? I’ve been having the Pong Nawat fever and that usually means I would scurry his lakorn collection and try to watch everything. He won me over with Kah Kong Kon. However, I was catching up with Lyn’s Lakorn Blog or iheartlakorns and she mentioned that Pancake and Om are featured in the remake of Taweepob. I was intriqued. From my memory, Taweepob is an amazing production, I loved both Saranyu and Ann Siriam and from my memory, they did a superb job. Heck, the lakorn won lakorn of the year during its time. It is a classic and well loved. So I begin to wonder how the remake would measure up. I decided to rewatch Taweepob just so I have a good basis… and the lakorn still has me in its crutches. I laughed, cried and enjoyed it tremendously- so this week I hope to finish my review on Taweepob 1994 and in the meantime, I’m also trying to finish Dum Kum and write a review for that as well.

Ruk Sorn Rode (Love’s Hidden Flavor)

lovefia

Posted on June 20, 2011

The nice thing about watching a lakorn is going where the actors and actresses take you. Based on their acting abilities, you forget any offenses that they have done outside of the tv screen. Such is the reality for me when I watch Pinky. At this point, I can aptly say that I don’t care what she has done or what type of a person she is (because rumors are rumors.) In the end, she is one amazing actress. Pinky is natural, photogenic and so easy to watch. Combined with Stephan’s tall good looks, Ruk Sorn Rode is an easily loved production.

As I scan the internet for a cast list, I am surprised by the synopsis found on AsianFuse Wiki. If one searched for Pinky Savika and selected Ruk Sorn Rode, one will be presented with a long synopsis of the lakorn. I don’t find that to be surprising. What I found however, confused and floored me. For one, let’s not presume to think that a synopsis is a play by play description of the lakorn. For another, I began to wonder if we were watching the same lakorn. I even scratched my head in confusion. The “synopsis” found on AsianFuse is entirely different then what actually played out in the lakorn. How odd. However for the sake of self preservation, I’m not going to describe the differences. If you’ve seen Ruk Sorn Rode, you would know how it played out. What I will discuss in this post is a short synopsis coming from yours truly, then proceed with my thoughts on the storyline, acting and cast chemistry.

Kah Kong Kon (A Person’s Value)

A person’s value cannot be determined by their exterior possession of money, prestige or beauty, but it is determined by the goodness of that person’s heart and the person’s ability to do the right thing. This message is relayed throughout the lakorn by obstacles and challenges that our two main protagonists must endure to find their happy ending.

Gluay (Noon Woranuch) is desperate for money, yet again, thanks to her gambling addict brother. She grew up in a farm and made ends meet by performing and teaching Thai traditional dances. Gluay is a proud, dutiful and strong woman. However she is faced with a jarring problem, her brother needed 10 million baht to pay off his gambling debt or else they will lose their grandmother’s farmhouse in which he had used for collateral. It appears luck was on her side when a stranger approaches her to be his mistress for a price. She knew that the man wanted her out of his brother’s life and was willing to pay the price. Because she wasn’t willing to degrade herself as a mistress, she bargained to be his wife in name for 10 million baht and they would divorce as soon as Pimarn gets married. Little did she know that the decision to marry Luk would change her life forever.

The Week Ahead

I’m going to take a quick break from Lakorn viewings, it seems I’ve been too enthralled and neglected other aspects of my favorite hobbies, like reading for one and writing..you have to admit though, since February, I’ve watched and reviewed 14 Lakorns, that is no small feat!

So for upcoming posts, topics will be pretty random, varying from personal to books.. or if I succumb to my addictive lakorn viewings again, sigh.. More reviews. At this point it is all game. Ciao.

Kadee Ded Hed Hang Rak

Posted on April 5, 2011

Sanisa (Pinky Sawika) is a rising lakorn actress whose life takes on a nasty turn when drugs were discovered in her condo. Accused of being a drug addict and drug dealer, Sanisa seeks refuge with her best friend‘s brother, Nawee (Chakrit Yamnam) in Koh San Jan. She leaves her job, condo and younger brother (Garan) behind to lay low from this shocking event. Soon however, the reality of her situation catches up with her and guilt of abandoning her brother overwhelms her, as well as the discovery that she was betrayed by her then boyfriend. Sanisa undergoes an internal battle with herself: should she turn herself in, trust the police to right this wrong, or stay away until things die down?

Nawee is a famous writer and owner of a resort in Koh San Jan. His life just got interesting when his sister’s best friend lands in his resort in which he later discovers that she is a suspect for drug dealing. After a sequence of learning that she did not commit the deed, Nawee becomes protective and champions her. His goal is to help her prove her innocence. In due course, when Sanisa and Nawee did the “right thing” by consulting his police officer friend (who happens to work for this crime case), they were met with another unexpected complication: even the police cannot be trusted.

Sapai Glai Peun Tiang

lovefia

Posted on April 4, 2011

Sapai Glai Peun Tiang is a romantic comedy starring Chakrit and Anne. There is something to be said for placing two professional actor and actress together for the first time: for one they put on great acting but most importantly, they have great chemistry! It is as if they have filmed a prior lakorn together.

Without giving the entire storyline away, “Sapai Glai Peun Tiang” is about Lalin, a feisty cop who decides to take matters into her own hands when she finds out her sister is pregnant with a mystery man. After discovering that the family will not accept her sister, she decides to marry the younger son Jormtup so she can convince or force the family to accept her sister.

Although the storyline is a bit ridiculous and flawed, we see the “marriage in name” unfolds between Lalin and Jormtup. We know that Jormtup is challenged by Lalin and he is determined to make her fall in love with him. And we also see that Lalin believes that she will exit the marriage unscathed. There are many subplots to this lakorn, but the main conflict arises on the feelings that are developed between the two main characters, how they fall in love and the battle between Lalin and her mother in law. Will their marriage survive? Will Jormpon finally take responsibility for his actions?

Balance

lovefia

Posted on March 31, 2011

I noticed that I used to read 2-3 books a week before I got into the swing of watching lakorns religiously, now I barely get a book read this whole month. It’s disheartening for me because I am avid reader, so the question is, how does one balance reading, watching and writing? It seems difficult and distracting to do everything at once. Is this human nature? Or do I lack focus? I will try harder, perhaps read one book a week, watch one lakorn and write my blog. I have been keeping up with lakorns and writing reviews for them, but my stories and other books has been neglected.
