One Fangirl’s Heart – Ep 1 Maya Tawan (Tawan’s Deception)

Oh yes. Replacing Buang Barp for the Weds-Thurs primetime slot is Maya Tawan (Tawan’s Deception.) Brought to us by TV Scene, Maya Tawan is part one of the Three Musketeers Series, Sahm Taharn Suea Sao, starring Yaya Urassaya and Aum Atichart. Since it is part of a “trilogy” I’m assuming that the duration of the lakorn is shorter than usual, but making for a speedy journey. Beautiful cinematography, I hope all lakorns are going to film this way. So crisp and clear, as if we’re watching a movie. I hope the wait is justified.

On Call 36 Hours (TVB Drama) – A Review

Posted on April 12, 2013

On Call 36 Hours really strikes a chord with me. Perhaps it reminds me of Grey’s Anatomy, the first wonderful season that is. “Hippocratic Crush” is it’s English title, although many have found it silly, I understand the philosophical meaning behind it. The TVB drama series centers around doctors- whether they are interns, residents or specialists- who undergoes Hippocratic oath (and must operate within the confines of Hippocrates medical belief) that they will practice medicine ethically and honestly. They all have a “crush” on such value because they strive to understand what it means to be a good doctor. It is interesting to watch the differences of healthcare professionals in Hong Kong versus the United States, but understanding that there are universal themes and truths behind the profession.

On call 36 hours tvb

The cast of “Hippocratic Crush”

This 25 episode medical drama follows the lives and journeys of interns and residents in Mercy Hospital of Hong Kong, who must prove that they will make the cut as doctors or determine their specialty field by working the 36 hours on call shifts. The writing, acting and directing is really quite something- pointing out that doctors aren’t superheroes; they are human, normal people who make mistakes but that the stakes are so much higher. Amidst the themes developed through the interesting medical cases paralleled with the doctors’ lives, we are also given romantic entanglement, family conflict and healthy doses of friendship. It is indeed a well-rounded story: funny, touching and tear jerking at the same time.

The simple backstory – a misunderstanding- The Cunning Love

lovefia

Posted on April 10, 2013

He was the big man on campus, the alpha male that drew females to him like bees to honey. Naturally Kemmick, an ugly duckling, found herself falling head over heels for him, P’Suea (Tiger), a man with a ridiculous mane and swagger. So Kemmick was attending a frat party- and she has low tolerance for alcohol- but upon seeing P’Suea’s cameo, she downed a glass (for courage) and immediately got drunk. When she passed out, P’Suea carried her heavy body to his room (out of the kindness of his heart?) and settled her in his bed.

P’Suea and Pooklook

Kemmick aka Pooklook, a pet name that P’Suea gave her when she refused to tell him her name, woke up in the middle of his bed, naked. As he walked out of the restroom, she questioned him on why he would do such a thing to her, and before he could explain himself, she misunderstood that they had been intimate together the night prior. In tears, she wrapped herself in the comforter, and stormed out of the frat house. But unfortunately, it was early the next day and everyone, I mean everyone from the night before was congregating in the halls and they leered at her. The group surmised that P’Suea’s taste in women had downgraded to the likes of Kemmick. Humiliated, Kemmick rushed out of the frat house, trying to forget the pain that has scarred her forever.

A sweet kiss and a wedding proposal- it’s a happy ending! Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on April 3, 2013

The curtains have drawn in Love Scheme Evil Scheme. The evil scheme had a good run, Payia orchestrated her lies, killed off anyone who knows or suspects the truth, and was able to luckily get away until her evilness was punished by death in the finale. Besides showing us that evil people have bad endings, we also can see that from the writer’s perspective, one little girl can really wreak some havoc, as unbelievable as it sounds.

But at the end of the day, good people win. There are a lot of “good” characters on this show, pretty much everyone is kind and forgiving in exception to Payia, Nop and Sukkuna. Which is why I am disinclined to believe that one singular character can do so much damage, but despite it’s predictable, myriad of clichéd subplots, there is a saving grace in this lakorn: the pairing.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.21.07 PM

And as far as I’m concerned, when there is a pairing that makes me spazz as if there is no tomorrow, I can pretty much forgive the plot. Which is why I find this lakorn so worthwhile in the end, I am glad I stuck around. Besides, with 15 episodes and its fast pace, you’re not investing too much like other channel 5 dramas that end with 30+ episodes, but only to have the rug pulled from under you. In addition, this particular lakorn introduces Toomtam as a newly minted pr’ek to the roster of pr’ek’s who are hot hot hot.

Can’t complain.

So let’s see how this drama ties up nicely in a bow.

The end is near (but not quite there yet hah) – Ep 14 Summary Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 28, 2013

The end is near, but we’re not quite there yet. Whoops, I’m sorry I lied. But that only means that we’ll have more Id-Korya scenes right? Well, we can always hope. And if this episode is any indication, it’s going to be a rough ride for Khun Id to the sunset.

I’m a little indifferent to this episode, because I feel that they took an entire (precious hour) to rescue Korya and Khun Dara from Nop and Payia’s wrath. Obviously there are purposes behind spending that much time, one, to gain Korya’s memory back and two, to kill off Nop. Despite its rationale, I was disappointed. My favorite part is the last eight minutes of the episode. The pacing is still fast and it is “action” packed, but as far as pre-finales go, it left me wanting more.

So I’ll go into a bit of my ranting (with episode summary of course), details of my favorite parts, then offer screenshots from fans.

Revelations – Ep 13 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 27, 2013

We are in our third act, an episode away from the climax, where Love Scheme Evil Scheme will come to a closure, ending our Exact series to fourteen episodes. Payia’s greed has pushed her to the point of no return, where she will do the last desperate act to gain all of the inheritance. Korya will do anything to protect the person she cares about, that’s Khun Dara, who soon discovers that Korya isn’t just “someone else” to her, but that she’s her own blood. As usual, this episode is intense, fast paced and keeps me excited for the grand finale. Oh, and Toomtam is really hot in this episode too, hah.

The highs and lows – on The Cunning Love (Paen Rai Phai Rak) and Khun Chai Tharatorn

lovefia

Posted on March 26, 2013

Is it better to live alone than to have someone who enters your life and possibly hurt you? A person with a wounded heart, like a bird with a broken wing, feels this way about love, and is wary of letting someone in to mend it. Film Rattapoom sings about this for the lakorn, The Cunning Love (Paen Rai Phai Rak), but I wonder if he is singing about the leading lady Kemmik, who has clearly been hurt several times over, or is he singing about his character Pisang, who hasn’t quite divulged his broken hearted history?

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 8.12.20 PM

In this week’s episodes, we learn that Kemmik has decided to pursue the new “job” for money, for the sake of saving her world in essence, and is set to make Mr. Pisang fall in love with her, then fall out of love with her so much so, he will leave the farm in his own accord. After all, 5 million baht is on the line here, her mother’s well-being is at stake, and her career as we know it is at the whim of the airline President. She is hoping to do this in 3 months, after all, she seems to break people up in a matter of a date. How hard could it be to gain the upper hand and make Mr. Pisang fall in love with her?

Hard. Mr. Pisang isn’t like the rest of the stupid, cheating men she is accustomed to. He is immune to her female wiles, her cunning tricks. Because he doesn’t trust her. The set up for her to conveniently be the lawyer’s long lost niece is simply that- a convenient excuse- and her reasoning that she needs to learn the ways of the farming life so she could eventually help her farmer fiancé in Denmark, reeks of fabrication. So you couldn’t blame Mr. Pisang for suspecting her of ulterior motives.

The Cunning Love (Paen Rai Phai Rak) – First Impressions

lovefia

Posted on March 21, 2013

108

Monday nights just got interesting again. Brought to us by Master One Production, Paen Rai Phai Rak (The Cunning Love) features the unassumingly beautiful Matt Peeranee together with the infamous Film Rattapoom in a rom-com lakorn that challenges love in the eyes of a flight attendant, Kemmik. She is jaded, anti-men, and the epitome of a hot mess. In her extracurricular activities, plus side job, Kemmik uses her beauty and talents to test the population of deceitful and amoral men. Essentially, ladies hire her to test if their man is faithful to them. Kemmik doesn’t mind it over much, because it serves to prove her point over and over again- the lesson that men are scums and that only lust exist in their cursed hearts.

She has valid reasons to be a man-hater. She certainly doesn’t go around snarling at men, mind you, but she certainly places judgments and has severe distrust in them. Could you blame the girl? Firstly, her father ran off with his mistress and left her mom. He soon dies, leaving her mom with nothing because the mistress was legally married to him. So she has to quit her studies abroad to return home to take care of her mom, get a job and pay off the debt that her father and his mistress incurred. Then her mother gets with this scumbag of a boyfriend, who uses her and abuses her. And finally, Kemmik thinks that she might have met the one, he’s a captain with the same airline company she works for, but he breaks their engagement claiming that he fell in love with another woman. Turns out, he’s just after the other woman’s wealth and just days before the wedding, he keeps coming after Kemmik, deeming that he cannot forget her. Whew, what a mess. There are many reasons for her to cry when it comes to love and life.

Death comes in threes – Ep 12 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 21, 2013

What an excellent, revealing episode. I could not be more pleased with the turning in events. Despite losing Gramps, death does come in threes. Farewell, Khun Chai, may your death only propel us to unravel the true heir to your inheritance. Payia learns that after getting rid of Gramps, she will only encounter more obstacles, because the truth will inevitably prevail. Khun Dara is starting to suspect that maybe this daughter of hers, is not really hers. We also see Korya gaining more and more confident to stand up to Payia. Because if the three deaths taught her anything, it is that she needs to be her own champion. But it certainly doesn’t hurt to have the uber arrogant and uber sexy Khun Id by her side along this very fast, very exciting ride. Yay us, the director certainly knows the way to a girl’s heart. Prepare to spazz.

Screen Shot 2013-03-21 at 3.22.55 PM

Korya pours the tainted simple syrup into Khun Chai’s tea, and before he takes his first sip, she sets the tone of the episode, “things will get better soon.” But it must get worse before it gets better. Khun Chai nods his head in agreement, and says, “at least the evil things that have been occurring in this household will be eliminated for once.” He downs his tea and as Korya leaves the library, he receives a call from the sergeant.

Without wasting any time, Khun Chai speaks into the classic rodeo phone, “I have a person in mind that I suspect is behind the murder of Mae Cheun. But you must promise me that you will do this quietly, I don’t want this to make the news. It’s a secret- because the person who I am suspecting is living in my Whang.” Not much more than he could say, Khun Chai collapses to the ground, clutching his stomach in pain. He dies instantly, lights out to gramps.

“You’re mine, you can’t die” LOL! – Ep 11 Love Scheme Evil Scheme

lovefia

Posted on March 20, 2013

In a story where the audiences already know who the bad guy is, what the main girl’s true identity is, and understands how the pieces of the puzzle fit together, it is important for the director to create some suspense behind how the rest of the cast will come to their own conclusions. Although I prefer to watch a plot in which I’m not privy to, I think this particular lakorn still manages to accomplish a fast pace, somewhat suspenseful ride- with the question of, will they ever find the evidences to convict Payia? So to that end, we are kept in the dark, especially this new little development towards the end of the episode.

As far as Id and Korya is concerned, we are making leaps and bounds with their relationship. Lots of spasm worthy moments my friends, so be prepared to squeal and wipe that grin off your face!

Screen Shot 2013-03-20 at 2.53.23 PM

In the episode prior, we had to see Mae Cheun pass away in cold blood. The man who carted her body and dumped her body into the sea, is currently in hiding. He recalls Payia ordering him to ensure that the ring disappear for good. He wonders why the ring is so important. He doesn’t tell Payia that he is in current custody of the ring.

Chisanu takes Taeng to Whang Siwalai to share her investigation about Korya’s past. They interrupt Id and Korya’s moment in the sunroom. Korya peers at the picture and Khun Id perches his hip on her chair. He can’t seem to stay too far from her.
