Tawan’s Sassy Rose – A Review

My favorite time of the year is the brink of Summer, right when the dew of Spring dries up, making way for long and slow days. The days are a little more effortless; the mood is a little more uplifting. Thus, putting me in the mood for some light hearted and fun lakorn. What better way to enjoy the onset of Summer, than to live vicariously through the lives of Rose and Tawan at Tawan’s Farm? There is something about a city girl having to live her life in the countryside – farmland even – and giving up the simple measures of life’s conveniences, that makes the viewing experience quite empathetic. A romp in the pigsty is just what the doctor ordered, but don’t forget the boots!

Channel 7 and Polyplus production presents Kularp Rai Korng Nai Tawan (Mr. Tawan and his Sassy Rose) a romantic comedy, feel good type lakorn, which aired the beginning of this year with a total of 15 episodes. It’s about time that Kan Kantathaworn plays a Pr’ek role in primetime TV, all glorious six feet of him. He has always been a compelling actor even as a villain, so it’s nice to see his dynamic acting skills put into good use. No need to steal the limelight from other Pr’eks anymore, this baby is all yours.

What Draws You to Lakorns?

lovefia

Posted on May 29, 2014

Why do you watch lakorns, or any dramas for that matter? Do you tune into lakorns for your favorite actors and actresses and see it to the end? Or do you watch lakorns for the storyline and characters? We all have different reasons as to why we commit ourselves to spending hours in front of our computers and Smart TV (technology is amazing!) and some of us just can’t help it because these shows are so addicting. And on top of that, lakorns are truly a breed of their own, there are certain plot devices unique only to Thai dramas. And sometimes, they raise my hackles.

I personally watch lakorns to get lost in the story and characters. A couple of requirements that I do have is that the Pr’ek is multi-dimensional; I must love his character, his choices (I should be able to understand his motives) and I should also find the Nang’ek likeable. Basically, the Pr’ek should be a character of a potential real life man that I can respect and admire. Don’t we want a Pr’ek we can all fall in love with?

The Era of Freedom – ‘In a Good Way’

Ah, this Taiwanese drama makes my heart so happy, despite my panda eyes. As you know, I started this show just a couple of days ago, and thanks to the Memorial Holiday weekend (long weekend), I was able to spend some time with this memorable series. I love the slice of life depiction of young adults in this era, the era of freedom, which isn’t too far from the actual events surrounding Taiwan in 1995. Without getting into specific historical events, this show doles out nuggets of wisdom about youth and freedom, friendship and love. Oh especially love.

I take my word back regarding Jia En crushing on Ren Wei in the beginning. He was definitely a best friend and someone she shadows growing up. She gets so lost in his identity, she forgot about her own. That is why the analogy of building your own castle, and being the King of your own castle spoke so much to her. Realizing that she needs to blaze a path of her own, Jia En forgives Ren Wei for ratting her out for sleeping at a man’s dorm and becomes more independent. This goes to show that she didn’t have feelings for Ren Wei in that way. Instead, she treasures their friendship and connection they have forged since grade school.

Build Your Own Castle – ‘In a Good Way’

Well hello there. Let’s go back in time to 1995, year of the Pig. And allow me to wallow in a moment of bliss – Liu Chuan! This Pr’ek, In a Good Way, is the Prince Charming, consorting among the common students of Cheng Dong University campus in Taipei, and being the carefree idol that he is. Top of the class, star basketball player, and coolest guy to crush on? Impossible. But alas it is and believably so since this is 1995, and Prince Charming, at least in dramaland, became something of a rarity and darn near extinction much after this golden year.

But who is this Liu Chuan, you may ask? Why, he is the guy that Jia En, our Nang’ek, meets in college and inadvertently impacts her life. Jia En grew up in Ping Dong with her best friend and childhood crush, Ren Wei. She practically orbits around him, so when he decides to apply to Cheng Dong Public University, she follows suit. Unfortunately she didn’t anticipate that her good friend and crush would dare change her major and thereby changing her fate. Jia En doesn’t get into college (because the finance major Ren Wei chose was too competitive, although she would have easily gotten into the business admin major that she had chosen) and she must wait another year to take the exam and re-apply.

Lakorn Chatter – What’s up 2014?

Since today marks the first day of lovefia.com (but many days – in fact years – for lovefia.wordpress.com), and since June is also creeping up on us, I think it is apt to take stock of the lakorn that has aired thus far, as well as upcoming anticipated lakorns for the remainder of 2014.

When I was much younger, and when lakorns used to be on VHS and you’d have to go to the video store to rent them, I watched everything – from Channel 7 to Channel 3 and even Channel 5- no exceptions. Lakorns will not be ignored. As time goes by and my days, hours, and minutes are taken up by work and life, I have to be a little more selective. Also, when you watch a lot of lakorns like me, you develop a certain taste and expectations for the crème de la crème, and learn to really put aside lakorns that are not worth your time.

Let’s take a look at lakorns this year thus far.

Are you in the mood for something different? Then the latest weekend installment, Rak Ork Rit (Jinxed Love) might be a good lakorn for you. Premiered this past Saturday, Rak Ork Rit presents the debate about one’s belief in luck. Do you believe that life is what you make of it, or do you believe that your fate is predetermined? Is life mostly about cause and effect or are we fated to ride this Destiny train?

The End of Spinsters and Casanovas?

Kuan Kaantong Gup Gang Por Pla Lai is one of those shows that you don’t want to say goodbye to. It is one of those shows where you sit back and actually miss the characters. Vicky Sunisa chimed in the Tonight Show that after the closing celebration of Spinsters Versus Casanovas, she thought about her character Nampeung and how much she would miss her. You know that it’s a good story with great characters if the actress herself long to play her character again. The ending itself closes on an uplifting note, but open ended enough that it can carry over to a potential sequel. So maybe this is just the beginning to another ending? I sure hope so. I can watch the heck out of this series.

From the first episode to the finale, the story was well paced and kept the fun going. It’s nothing like watching a story you expect to be funny, but had way too many elements of melo (yeah, I’m talking about you Paen Rai Phai Rak.) There were touches of realism and angst in this drama, but the show managed to keep it laugh out loud funny, especially when the girls are bawling their eyes out. It makes you feel like a crazy person laughing and crying at the TV with these perfectly imperfect Spinsters.

‘Yah Leum Chan’ will end with 13 episodes

Yah Leum Chan – namely Forget Me Not – is coming to an end after such a highly anticipated beginning. From the outset, it was a recipe for success: we have a renown director PaaJaew, an acclaimed producer of Sood Saneha, and a star studded cast of Anne Thongprasom, Tik Jesadaporn, Kong Saharat and Rita Jensen. But despite having all of the seemingly right ingredients, it is as if no one really tasted the food. So the dish comes out looking pretty but missing a certain spice, leaving one quite regretful that the chef couldn’t pull it off.

First Ekkaphong in Kularb Son Klin

Currently airing on evening television is Kularb Son Klin starring First Ekkaphong and Marie Broenner by Quiz and Quest production. Evening dramas air Monday to Friday for 50 minutes and doesn’t procure as many viewers as their primetime counterpart, and they tend to be a little fluffier and a lot more contrived. However, after giving evening dramas my due diligence, I find myself enjoying it so thoroughly. And you have one person to thank for that, First Ekkaphong. Despite being relegated to playing an evening drama pr’ek, I find First to be more engaging than other primetime pr’eks out there. He’s charming, too tall, and absolutely too handsome for his own good.

I started noticing First in Nang Rai Summer where he delighted me with his role as Tonnam, the hotheaded resort owner. But he especially stood out for me in this newest installment, Kularb Son Klin as Khun Soon, the level headed restaurant owner and operator. This lakorn is also Marie Broenner’s last lakorn for Channel 3, and despite many ridicules about her off screen behavior or lack of onscreen talent, Marie’s acting has improved since her first lakorn, 3 Num Nuea Thong. But I believe more than anything, that much of a good lakorn has more to do with directing, writing and chemistry with one’s costars.

Yah Leum Chan: Episode 11

EPISODE 11 PREVIEW

Kemchart must have done an insane amount of merit from his past life because in this lifetime, everyone – in exception to our heroine Su – is so nice to him. We see that he’s withdrawn, sad, giving up hope with life. His father figure, Somkit, cannot fathom to see his beloved employer depressed and seeks Ganlong’s help. He shamelessly asks Ganlong to help Kemchart and his company by kneeling down and begging. Ganlong, being the sweetheart that she is, could only give in. But before she helps Kemchart, she wants to know how Su really feels about him. With a person who is as tightlipped and stubborn as Su, one has to use sneaky methods. Ganlong pretends to be angry at Su and Kemchart so that Su will eventually reveal how she feels. Understanding that Su would much rather Ganlong hate her instead of Kemchart, Ganlong receives her answer. She talks some sense into Kemchart, literally slaps him around a couple of times until he wakes up to smell the sea (so to speak.) She tells him that it is time for him to get up and FIX things.

Knowing that Ganlong doesn’t hate him and will still be friends with him, Kemchart finds the energy to give life another go. From here on out, he will try to make it right with Su again, as well as apologize to anyone he has hurt along the way. Particularly in this episode, it’s Su’s time to give Kemchart what he deserves. And yet, I can’t find the pity in my heart to feel badly for Kemchart, nor the excitement that Su finally gets her moment.

Is it bad that I could watch Ganlong and P’Eua decorate cakes all day long?
