“And life goes (beautifully) on” Ep 11 Recap of This Land is Our Land

Posted on July 21, 2012

Vilai and family emerged from Darunee’s room after they had tucked her in bed. Vilai wanted to have Vey and Vi spend the night so they could take care of her, comforting someone during a tough time is a “golden” opportunity to get on that person’s good side. However, Vey and Vi didn’t heed their mother’s advice because they feared grandma’s spirit is still roaming the farm. Which leaves Aunt Kaew and Jingjaew to watch Darunee. Athit stood by the door watching Darunee’s distraught condition. She was still crying in her sleep. He sat on the bed beside her as she murmured in her sleep. Athit grasped her hands with his and held tightly for comfort. She begged grandma to come back to her,…

“It’s so hard to say goodbye”- Ep 10 Recap of This Land is Our Land

Posted on July 21, 2012

A touching episode that got me reeling with emotions: nostalgia, longing, and finally, a sad farewell to grandma Daeng. Take out some tissue papers, friends, you’re going to need them. — The morning following the great storm, Athit furiously plucks the rice stalks that were floating on the paddies. Darunee, grandma and Vilai’s brood looked on with concern. Darunee yelled at Athit to stop, it was useless. But Athit needed to revive them; it was grandma’s dreams to see the rice field, he couldn’t fail. But grandma told him that she has many dreams. Mother Nature needed to remind them of their responsibilities to the land: if they neglect it, this was their punishment. It was not our fault. Furthermore, grandma has shed tears…

Mam Gam Dang- A Review

lovefia

Posted on July 17, 2012

Mam Gam Dang (Red-cheeked Madam) is a destination lakorn set in London where Anamika studies abroad with her three best friends, Metawee, Art and Napat. The drama introduces us to a Thai student’s life abroad, and how they remain in their familiar community: Ana works in a Thai restaurant and hangs out with her Thai friends- she even has Thai nemesis as well- creating a clear difference in social class even in a foreign country, yet indicating one’s need to connect with people of similar heritage. Since Ana and Mey are from the working class, they must work for a living while their wealthier counterparts peruse London’s expensive boutiques. One fine day, at the end of their term in London, Pat discovers that he…

“A New Chapter”– Ep 9 Recap of This Land is Our Land

lovefia

Posted on July 15, 2012

The shift in atmosphere from the previous episode has lead us to this fork in the road, where we will leave behind the young Darunee and immersed with the mature, more grown up woman. Athit has also developed in his endeavor, becoming an adept farmer in his own right. One problem is slowly getting fixed while a new conflict is slowly getting introduced. The road to full fledge love is slowly simmering like a chef cooking a pot of stew that we know will be delicious. I am very pleased with the way this lakorn is progressing, but almost apprehensive with a new obstacle that our two leading characters will have to overcome. ‘Tis the working of the universe, I suppose. *** Darunee stood…

A Shifting Atmosphere- Ep 8 Recap of This Land is Our Land

Posted on July 14, 2012

Darunee walked broodingly out of the classroom, she just finished day one of her entrance examinations. Unsure of how the professor would grade her work, she could not be overly confident. As she proceeded towards the parking lot, P’Vey appeared and handed her a bouquet of flowers. He harped that just by looking at her aura, he knew she would pass. Darunee relented that she still has one more day of testing and she needed to go back and study. At the farmhouse, Athit reviewed the financial records with grandma. She praised him for being so detail oriented. As he prepared to leave, Darunee and Vey waltzed in; Athit noticed the beautiful bouquet of flowers in her hands. Vey added that Darunee loves them!…

“Why can’t it be these two?” Ep 7 Recap of This Land is Our Land

lovefia

Posted on July 13, 2012

Ah, what a great episode. I love Aunt Kaew, she’s the mediator between the people in the house and the rest of the farm. Today, as Darunee and Grandma were setting the table for lunch, she reported that Athit won’t be joining them. He’s all about work these days- super quiet and keeps to himself. Aunt Kaew feels exhausted on his behalf because he’s working so hard. Grandma reckoned that he’s making himself busy so he won’t think about his problems. Aunt Kaew also mentioned that it was a good thing he already has a wife in Pakchong and doesn’t have to marry Thongprasri for real. Why is it that no one wants to know more about this mysterious “wife” of Athit’s?! Darunee listened…

What is more important: the beginning, middle or ending of a lakorn?

lovefia

Posted on July 10, 2012

As I am writing a review for Mam Gam Dang, I got to thinking about the importance of the beginning, middle and ending of lakorns. You see, Mam Gam Dang had a great beginning, it was engaging and you easily fall in love with the leading characters. Towards the middle of the drama, things remained stagnant but at least the feelings between the two characters made progress and we get an inkling that things will be alright in the end. Until, well, the ending, where everything fell apart and the sequences just didn’t make sense. Which really threw me off and got me thinking about what is important to me: can I forgive a lakorn that starts great but ends badly? Or is a…

“A Sad Turn of Events”- Ep 6 Recap of This Land Is Our Land

lovefia

Posted on July 9, 2012

Our lakorn takes on a somber tone, where Athit must decide what he will do with his future. In episode 6, Athit is still sick from the banana farm debacle and didn’t have the opportunity to confide in his grandma, the transgressions he thought he may have committed. As he lay in bed, his three farm workers, whom he thought were loyal to him and loved him, came crawling into his room. With his eyes still shut, he listened to their tormented concessions, apologizing profusely for betraying him. They could have told him, they wanted to tell him, and now they want to die for deceiving him. Athit opened his eyes irritatingly and look at the three sad faces. He sat up and told…

“Actions Have Consequences”- Ep 5 Recap of This Land Is Our Land

lovefia

Posted on July 8, 2012

Athit was really excited that grandma gave him a plot of land so he could grow a banana farm. Each stroke of the picks and sledgehammers moved him closer to building security for his family. Grandma was also going to give him the earnings he would make from selling these bananas. Things were going great for him; he has earned respect from the farm workers and grandma, minus one person. Little did he know that one particular person was plotting his demise. Darunee, knew that the bananas he received were wild bananas- inedible- but she has decided to sit back and watch Athit fail. In her opinion, it would give him a piece of the humble pie. In episode 5, both learned a valuable…
