2014 Lakorn Year In Review

lovefia

2014yearreview

It’s that time of the year again, and for once, I am happy to say that it hasn’t been difficult to pick my favorite lakorn of the year – especially since I did not watch many lakorns to its completion.

With a year full of anticipated lakorns, one understated lakorn came and swept me by surprise: Spinsters and Casanovas (Kuan Kaantong Gup Gang Por Pla Lai). With its witty and smart writing, loveable (relatable) characters, and charismatic pairings, Spinsters offered a story about friendship, finding peace with yourself (and your age) as well as love, even when it mired against traditional expectations.

Suea – The Weretiger – First Impressions

We’ve seen our fair share of TV adaptations about tales of the werewolf and even vampires, but are you ready to see a depiction of the weretiger, more specifically “Suea” (tiger)?

In this midweek lakorn lineup, Suea starring Taya Rogers, Nike Nitidon and Bank Cash, the weretigers are portrayed as dangerous sorcerers who are capable of shape shifting into the human form during a full moon the color of blood in order to lure humans and eat them. The wild animal keepers believe this wholeheartedly and we see them trying to hunt a male (Bank Cash) and female weretigers on the verge of mating. The only way to kill them is to aim for the heart.

Sam Bai Mai Tao – First Impressions

Brought to us by Maker Group Production and directed by Chai Chatayodom, Sam Bai Mai Tao, is the newest weekend installment from Channel 3. Airing its first episode last Sunday, this remake from ’95 brings on a lighthearted family drama to the current lakorn lineup.

The story follows a warm and loving family- as seen in the above photo – albeit with a strict father. There is nothing more in life that he loves more than to freeze the moments with his daughters and keep them where he wants them. Perhaps due to his possessive and interfering parental ways, his three daughters are anything but under his firm control.

Best birthday present ever.. if I do say so myself. We are over the moon!

It’s been a busy last several weeks, but I must say that I’m ready for a new lakorn to knock my socks off. Can’t say that I’m sorry to see Plerng Chimplee end, or even Malee Rerngrabum and Suey Rai Sai Lub.

What are you watching/spazzing over?

I noticed that Pope Rak aired last week, starring Mark and Bella (two of the actors that I’ve grown to.. well.. feel indifferent towards.) But I’m looking forward to Suea with the beautiful Taya Rogers! Any thoughts on those two lakorns thus far?

Lakorn Odds and Ends

The holiday months are creeping right around the corner with the end of the year looming ahead. Not to mention, the year in review, which I have a feeling that my list is as uncomprehensive as it will be. After the Rising Sun series ended, and after discovering my awesomely life changing news, I’ve been away from lakorns. But mind you, that has only been a few weeks.

Although, could you really blame me? The current lineup has little to be desired, at least for me:

Roy Fun Tawan Deurd: Episode 12 Final

It’s sayonara for Roy Fun Tawan Deurd, the Rising Sun Series II. It’s an action packed finale as any climax would have it, blood, deaths (the right ones!) and late blooming revelations. I must say that the ending of this show has some similarities to the previous show, but the final nugget of conflict perhaps will bring about a necessary intro to the third story – otherwise I won’t be able to make sense of its purpose. Our hero thinks he’s bested the gang but only to be surprised by their one-upmanship. However, that’s why he has such a smart heroine, who comes loaded with reinforcements to take the baddies down once and forever. Our duo are as cute as ever as they tie the knot and seal what has been quite the journey in the last few months. But I don’t know if I’m ready to say goodbye to Nadech and Yaya. So much chemistry. So much love.

Nadech Kugimiya and Mew Nitha to headline new lakorn ‘Tarm Rak Keun Jai’

“New” would be a relative word, since this is a remake lakorn from its original inception in 1998, but it’s a new lakorn for our leads who are collaborating together for the first time.

Tarm Rak Keun Jai (which literally means pursue love back to the heart) is a romantic, easygoing story taken place at a farm. Nadech will take on a farm owner named Singh and with his new, rugged look, he’ll be the dreamy image that manifests itself out of the book. Mew plays Nuna who has been estranged from her long lost father, played by Au (the original hero from 1998), and she will be on a mission to find him. Then turns out, Au’s character (Rarm) will fall in love with Singh’s sister (played by Diana)– now that will be interesting!

Roy Fun Tawan Deurd: Episode 11

The end is near, but not yet. Some of you may rejoice that there’s one more episode to watch Ryu and Mayumi, and others may just want to see some of the bad guys die already. The thing about being a viewer and knowing who the bad guys are and what they’ve done, and watching our good guys scramble to catch up to the bad guys, is that it’s frustrating. You just want them to get there already. So let’s DO IT! Thankfully, our hero makes some strides in this episode and our heroine’s eyes are finally opened to the truth. She decides to trust her beloved with no qualms (ifs ands or buts) and we watch their relationship become stronger and more enduring.

Behind every great man there is a great woman. This phrase couldn’t be truer in this episode and story.
