The Lady Summer (Nang Rai Summer)– A Review

lovefia

Posted on May 5, 2014

nangraisummer

More than twenty years ago, Pu Song Tarn Resort in Ratburi had once been a renowned resort due to its exotic and rare hybrid flower, The Lady Summer. However after the unfortunate death of its horticulturist, this rare breed ceased to bloom and flower for any eyes to feast upon its beauty, thus taking away the guests, the popularity, and the curiosity with it, leaving Pu Song Tarn Resort scraping by in present day, with an interested buyer knocking at its door.

But the younger generation of the resort owner, Tonnam (First Akkapong), has grand ideals and strong work ethic, not to mention something to prove. He is determined to turn things around and make his resort- a resort that his father built from the ground up- become famous once again. His only hope lies in making The Lady Summer bloom, and much as he hates to admit it, he needs one particular person’s specialty. Ploylada (Namfon Patcharin), the resort’s horticulturist and resident thug, has been the cunning and bothersome girl that he had the bad fortune to grow up with. The two fight tooth and nail and are both too hot in the head to let a day go by without a fight. He refers to her as “Nang Rai” which means a mean girl or villainess in lakorns. The lakorn title “Nang Rai Summer” plays on the reference to The Lady Summer as well as our mean and conniving leading lady.

Courting the Casanovas

lovefia

Courting the Casanovas is no easy feat, especially for the Spinsters. But all things are difficult before they are easy, no?

I just love this lakorn to pieces. It’s my new crack show. I haven’t sat by my tv waiting for every minute as I do with this show. It’s embarrassing, really. Nursing headaches from too much margaritas last night AND waking up early? Blasphemy. But I’d do it again.

From last week’s episodes, the girls made peace and are back together again. The inciting incident – the fact that they were provoked to find a boyfriend – no longer matters and the girls can give up their ruse. So what’s the point of having a fake boyfriend around? And that my friends, is where the show gets interesting and reminds me of a quote:

Love is like war: easy to begin but very hard to stop. -H. L. Mencken

The girls are falling for the Casanovas and they realize that this is perhaps their last chance for happiness.

Yah Leum Chan: Episode 9

lovefia

Screen Shot 2014-05-01 at 5.06.41 PM

Viewers! Don’t loosen your resolve, hold strong from the sad face of Kemchart and remember how evil he was! Don’t let that face weaken you, he’s got to be put through the ringer first. Although I must say, we are starting to see the shift in the direction of this lakorn, gearing for the third act, oh especially the end of this episode.

The denial, the wall around Kemchart is slowly (but surely) disintegrating. People are not letting him off the hook this time around. Case in point, Kanlong, she’s inviting Channa and Su to assist her with the engagement planning because she wants to see how jealous and batshit crazy Kemchart would get when he’s around Su. She’s of the opinion that one has to see it to believe it. But can she accept the truth when it slaps her in the face? Can she accept the fact that Kemchart is in love with Su? Kanlong feels assured that she can and will end things. Secondly, Eua is not putting up with Kemchart’s complete disrespect for Su. He gives him a sweet punch in the face and reminds him that he doesn’t know Su well enough to form that opinion. Ouch. But yeah! Then we have his very own trusted right hand man who hires an investigator to dig up his boss’ past! He warns Kemchart that Kanlong could easily do the same, and she can easily find out about him and Su. Be afraid Kemchart, be very afraid.

Most importantly, Su’s not going to let him walk all over her anymore. Just because she donated her body to him one night, doesn’t mean he owns her. Realizing that their passionate love that night meant that she has repaid his debt, Kemchart has no other reason to justify why he wants to see her. Is it because he can’t forget about her? Is it because – like Somkit tells him – that she could easily move on but he simply could not? Oh the diabolical man, could it be possible that he’s feeling remorse?

We can tell that the tone of this lakorn is switching gears and waiting to close out this melodrama to a hopefully wrung up pr’ek. But seriously, don’t look at his sad eyes! Because maybe that made me smile a little today. And maybe that made me feel a little more hopeful today.

Alas don’t forget to head on over to Darkness Lakorns to read the full recap for episode 9! See you back here for episode 10!

I have a few words for Kemchart and they’re all very ugly. You will see them spewed throughout this episode. I’ll just get right to the recaps and you can read my thoughts on the last paragraph.

*Pictures are finally added, despite such a vexing episode! Lovelies, feel free to give your two cents below!

Spinsters and Casanovas – Reunited Episode 6

It is poetic justice that the person who broke up the friendship would be the person who eventually brings everyone together again.

We have come to learn that Linee, Maple and Nampeung admit profusely that they hate each other’s guts, that they can’t stand the notion of being in each other’s company. Yet behind closed doors and deep down in their hearts, they follow each other’s lives secretly, always curious to learn the other’s status updates. And in one particular climatic scene, they finally realize just how much they long to be friends, and how much they need each other more than anything.

Let’s talk about how this all came about in episode 6.

Spinsters and Casanovas

lovefia

Posted on April 28, 2014

sc

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of a good head, must be in want of greener pastures.

In the case of Spinster versus Casanovas, three 35 year old women – established women mind you – are handed a classic feminine issue, their good friend is getting married and they are still, unequivocally single. This usually doesn’t bother them, until their good friend contrives for all three women to meet face to face after several years since the disbandment of their friendship.  Suddenly, the competitiveness, the pain and hurt takes center stage. The three women turn their pain into anger and vow that they will MARRY before the other and in one month no less. It doesn’t matter that they each do not have a boyfriend, it doesn’t matter that the promise came from anger and jealousy.

PREVIEW

Kanlong runs into Kemchart’s arms – “I never imagined someone would see the value of my work like this!” Su looks away, pained.

Kem pulls Su close and says to her, “After work don’t go home yet, I have a surprise for you.”

We see Kemchart in the pool with the twin boys waving at Suriyong. She waves and smiles back.

Orn confronts Eua, “There’s gotta be something going on between Kem and his assistant!”

Wanita threatens Su to step aside, and when Su doesn’t, she pushes her into the pool.

In the next clip, Wanita snipes at Kanlong, “Even if you’re Kem’s wife, I don’t care!”

Then Su falls on top of Kem, which begs the question from Eua, “What’s going on between you and Kem?”

Yah Leum Chan : Episode 4

Screen Shot 2014-04-16 at 11.34.55 PM

It’s a good backstory episode, complete with our characters walking down memory lane. We find out Eua’s biggest regret, we learn Kemchart and Suriyawadee’s cute past. But also, we learn that the past always has its interesting way of shaping the future and character. Some characters change for the good, while other (singular, if you get my meaning) mainly turn to the dark side.
