A Sweet Reprieve- Ep 13 Ubatheehet

Posted on December 11, 2012

Is it the calm before the storm? Hopefully not because our duo is having such sweet moments in this episode. Typically, a sweet moment for Aroon, is followed by some misunderstanding. But he has made progress- whatever mental barrier that stopped him from fully trusting her, has shed slowly- and he’s going to bat for her more than she could ever expect. The tide has changed from last episode- Aroon showing his affection towards Whitney- and now Whitney, having some reservations towards Aroon because of her guilt towards Non. Let’s see how adept Mr. Aroon can turn this table.

601642_435425453173164_1605275116_n

The sun that promises a new day rises above the sea, shining brightly the following morning. Whitney is on her knees, praying that Aroon will get well soon. Then she hears Jan’s voice announcing that he’s home. She smiles aptly and retreats to her hut. But upon learning that she is not part of the group that welcomes him home, Aroon seeks her out.

He opens the door of the hut to find her on the ground, working on the shell chimes.

“Aren’t you aware that I’ve returned?” he asks.

She peers at the length of his body, “You look well now. I’m happy for you.” She returns her attention to her work.

He squats down to maintain eye level with her, “I heard you stayed at the big house?”

Whitney panics, thinking that that he would be mad, “There was a severe rainstorm-“

“Then I heard you stayed by my side at the hospital,” he adds. He reaches for her hand and surveys her callouses. He mentions that her hand is all cut up; if she doesn’t tend to it, it won’t heal properly. He orders her to stay at the big house with him- of course, that is the whole point to begin with.

“I’m fine,” she pulls her hand away, “Staying here is more comfortable.”

“Did I ever allow you to disobey me?” he questions.

Then because she doesn’t agree nor disagree, he hauls her into his arms and makes their way to the big house. When he sees the housekeepers walking towards them, he puts her down slowly. He orders Chai to take down the hut because Whitney will be staying at the big house from now on. Chai could only beam at the thought. And to Jan’s horror, Aroon carries Whitney all the way to the big house. Lol.

He places her down on the sofa and seats himself across from her. She looks very confused at him. After handing her his prescription medications, he tells her to sort them and give them to him.

“This will be your role every day,” he tells her.

“Why does it have to be me?” she asks.

“Well you did it at the hospital, you can’t just stop doing it.”

He looks tenderly at her and takes her hand. “And since you’ll be caring for me, I’ll take care of you.” Aww.

Whitney’s face is stunned.

“From now on, you don’t have to work so hard. I will take care of you myself,” he admonishes.

He takes the rubbing medicine and tends to her cuts. She’s smiling at his kindness.

That afternoon, Whitney changes into a different outfit and makes her way to the yard. She finds Aroon attempting her work.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

“Your work. Your hand still hurts,” he replies. He shows her his handy work, “How is it, pretty?”

She studies his work and smiles widely.

“What is that smile supposed to mean?” he asks.

She takes a seat on the bench and laughs, “The pattern is all over the place, who’s going to buy it?”

He thinks she’s insulting him by laughing at his hardwork. “If you’re so great, why don’t you teach me then?”

She calmly shows him how it’s done and as they complete their work, she tells him that his chimes are pretty, in a strange way. He beams at her compliment and tells her that he has something for her. He takes out a shell head piece he made for her.

“You don’t like it?” he tries to take it back.

“No! I do.. I like it very much,” she says, touched.

They decide to make their own food for dinner since the housekeepers are unavailable, and shops at the fresh food market. The vendors recognize Aroon and Whitney immediately, and made her feel uncomfortable.

“I should wait in the car..” she starts.

“No,” Aroon takes her by the arm, “I don’t know what you want to eat.” He urges her along to a different area. They tease each other with the fermented shrimp paste.

Aroon cooks that evening, showing off his culinary skills- and they have a romantic, candle light dinner.

A nice stroll on the beach follows as they open up a little more about themselves.

“I’ve never really gotten the opportunity to walk on the beach like this before,” Whitney says.

“Why not? Were you that afraid of me?” Aroon asks.

“I was afraid you’d chase me out again,” Whitney says tritely. She admires their surrounding. “Khun Wirot’s home is so pretty right by the water. I’d love to have a home like this.”

“You can go home and ask your dad to buy one for you,” Aroon says genuinely.

“I told you already that I don’t have anything left anymore. No money or family.” She decides to change the subject. “By the way, how did you and Khun Wirot meet?”

“We went to school together when we were young- and we’d always come to his beach home. Now that he’s living abroad, he allows myself and Dekcha access to his home.”

“Too bad he’s gone now..” Whitney says regretfully, meaning to say that it would be nice if they all get to know each other better. But Aroon gets jealous, hah.

Their feet are immersed in the salty sea water. “They say that the sea is good at healing the wound,” he tells her then unceremoniously tries to throw her into the water. They tease each other for a while until he walks away to hide behind a tree. He checks his phone, but as he looks up, she was nowhere to be found. Aroon panics and searches for her.

291820_468130613238356_67773329_n

Whitney shows up behind him and pushes him, thereby ruining his phone again. They reach the porch leading to the big house.

“This is the second phone you broke,” he says.

“I’m really sorry..”

“The last time you did this, you had the money to pay for it. Now you don’t. How are you going to pay for it?”

“I can clean your house..” she says.

“That’s not enough.”

“I can wash the dishes. Make coffee for you every morning. Wash your car.”

He shakes his head and says, “you have to do everything I tell you to and that will be enough.” He smiles and walks away.

Whitney is elated with the turning in events. He’s friendly to her again. But soon, she questions why. Jan confronts her in the dark. She tells Whitney that Aroon is only being nice to her because he’s repaying her for what she did for him in the hospital. She further mentions that Aroon will never forget what she has done.

Bright and early the next morning, Whitney stretches before the sunlight.

Aroon approaches her and takes note of her early rise.

“I remember you saying that you can gain energy from the sunlight. I’m trying it. I want to start a new life.”

“Where are you going to start this new life?” Aroon questions.

She frowns, “you already know that I have nowhere else to go.”

He smiles, “Then I’ll take you to a place. Pack your things.”

Whitney panics, it must be what Jan tells her. He’s going to get rid of her, send her off to another god forsaken place.

They meet up sometime later at the boat. He’s bringing a backpack, and she, just herself.

“You’re not taking anything with you?” he asks.

“I came empty handed and so I’ll leave empty handed,” she says plainly.

He takes her to a small, stranded island off the beach. When they arrive and her feet hit the sand, the isolation is clear. She panics. “Do you want me to stay here?! (as in forever?)” She starts to tear up.

He’s all nonchalant about it. “Yeah, it’s a good spot.”

“There’s no hut.. did you want me to build one?!”

“Why?”

“Then where do you expect me seek shelter when there’s a rainstorm? If you’re going to torture me like this, then you can just leave!” she stammers. “I don’t need anything because in a few days I will die anyway.”

He’s looking at her with confusion.

“You can leave now. I’ll try my best to survive… if this is where you want me to stay.”

“I don’t get it,” he says. “I brought you here for a picnic.” LOL. “I brought you here because it’s really pretty here.”

This shocks Whitney. She wipes her tears away, a little embarrassed. “Let me help you with the things.”

He asks her why she thought he would leave her stranded here. Whitney explains what Jan said to her. “I thought now that I’m no use, you’d want to get rid of me.”

He laughs at her.

They make a picnic on the beach and he tells her to eat a lot so she has the energy to cry. LOL.

The sun sets. “What do you think of this place?” he asks.

“The air is cool and the view is beautiful,” she says.

“Do you want to stay here then?” he teases.

She glares at him, and he laughs.

Sleepily, he orders her to build him a hammock. When he pretends to fall asleep, Whitney tries to mess with him by drawing something on his face. They chase around the hammock and tease each other.

Sometime later, they return to the boat. But before they leave, he tells her to look at the pretty sunset.

“It is as if time is flitting away,” he says.

“But there will always be a new day,” she adds.

“We’ll always have time to start a new life.”

The two look at each other with a smile.

What will the new day bring? A stirring of trouble but at least this time around, Aroon is on her side.

That trouble presents itself at the beach town. Dekcha learns from Wirot that Whitney is with Aroon at the beach house. He decides to pay them a visit because he was afraid Aroon is torturing Whitney. Nut is suspicious of Dekcha and decides to follow him. Trying to stall for time, Dekcha makes them to miss the caravan to the beach town. This caused the two to be stranded and robbed. They are able to seek shelter at the nearest temple.

They finally make it to the beach town where they discover the truth. Nut is furious that Aroon seems to be smitten with Whitney. Not only that, he’s protecting her. She accuses him of forgetting about her sister. Although she wanted to head back to Bangkok, they could not as they’ve been robbed of their wallets.

That night Aroon and Dekcha have a man to man talk by the dock.

Dekcha tells Aroon that the reason why he came is to make sure Whitney isn’t tormented. He wants to see for himself. “You stopped being an idiot,” Dekcha says. Lol.

Aroon questions himself for being weak and Dekcha tells him to stop caring about what other people think, and to only worry about how he feels.

“You’ve been running away from your feelings,” Dekcha adds.

Aroon seeks Whitney in her room, wondering if Nut has been mean to her.

“Don’t bother with me,” she says, “I can take care of myself. You should go take care of Khun Nut. She needs your understanding… I don’t want her to be even more sad because you are nice to me.”

He tries to stop her. But before she closes the door on him, she says, “Don’t make me feel like I’m more troublesome than this.” Aroon continues to knock on the door, “Don’t do this, Whitney.”

Meanwhile Nut cries to Dekcha. She walks into the comfort of his arms. “I shouldn’t come here right?”

Dekcha advises her that it is best to accept the truth when you see it. But the two are heartbroken.

Jan is evil as always and blows Nut’s ears. She tells her that Whitney is lying to the people in town that she’s his wife. This makes Nut furious. Jan further tells Nut that she should let Whitney’s family know her whereabouts so she could go home once and for all.

Just when Nut is about to make a phone call, she sees Whitney. Whitney tries to keep her steady because she notices a snake slithering its way towards Nut. But the younger woman doesn’t listen and moves, so Whitney could only use herself as a barrier. Nut stares in shock at Whitney’ unconciouss body on the ground, the woman just saved her life.

At the hospital, Nut sees how much Aroon cares about Whitney. He’s holding her weak body in his arms, crying. Even though “the other woman” saved her life, she couldn’t bear seeing them together and decides to leave. She tells Aroon that she has felt a loss from her sister before, now that she’s losing Aroon too, it hurts less.

Dekcha visits Whitney before they leave town. Whitney begs for him to promise not to tell her father. She doesn’t ever want to return. Dekcha tells her that Khun Amnui is sick with worry. She tests out this theory by calling her home phone, but she learns that her father is on his way to Japan for a business trip. So much for caring. This crosses her mind and she cries from the disappointment.

Aroon brings Whitney back to the big house when the doctor released her from the hospital. He plants her tenderly on the bed. He leaves and appears some time later with a gift for her. It was the jewelry she had sold to pay for his hospital expenses. This touches her. Aww. She decides she wants to bathe, but Aroon says that she can’t do it herself yet. “Let me wipe you down then,” he suggests. Whitney looks at him in horror. Hehe.

What a sweet reprieve.

*A quick note: I wanted to english sub this episode (well the main character’s clips anyway) but the software I use isn’t cooperating and I just got fed up. Hopefully you are able to enjoy a recap instead. There is a reason why I am not meant to sub! It frustrates me too much. Hats off to those who do.

Changing Tides: Ep 12 Ubatheehet [Eng Sub]

lovefia

Posted on December 8, 2012

This video is dedicated to Whitney and Aroon’s scene in episode 12. Leading up to this Aroon has been somewhat bipolar in his efforts with Whitney. He doesn’t know how to deal with her. He takes a job as a sea leg and tells Chai that this was the only way to make sure Whitney leaves him alone, on her own accord that is. But he always fails to understand that Whitney is stubborn. Being on the sea is treacherous as Aroon topples over the boat due to a severe rainstorm. In this scene, Whitney stays by his side, does all she could to make sure he gets the financial/doctor’s help as he needs by selling her jewelry, and finally, picking up an extra job creating shell shingles to make extra money. Her condition and resolve weakens and this action shows Aroon how much she cares about him- and it shows himself, how much he has been running away from his feelings for her. The tides are changing, and we are seeing the revelation on Aroon’s part. Which is about time!

I’m English subbing this episode because out of all of their scenes thus far, we actually get a scene where I don’t want to throttle the main guy. Besides, the majority of this episode is filled with the antagonists screwing each other- who wants to read/see that anyway? Do enjoy.

Turbulent Seas – Ep 11 Ubatheehet

lovefia

Posted on December 6, 2012

We are on a precarious voyage, our ship rocking against the wave. Most of the time it is a rough ride filled with misunderstandings. There is a patch of smooth sailing, but only to be swept by another big tide. That is how I feel about the relationship between Aroon and Whitney. Only this time, the stake is higher and a life is on the line, most specifically Whitney’s life. This is an intense episode- do brace yourselves.

198375_465412663510151_826760272_n

A storm reaches the beach town where Aroon and Whitney are situated. The high wind and rain slashes against the windows. Aroon peers over at the hut in the yard, wondering how Whitney is faring. But he doesn’t succumb to his need to help her; he merely hopes that the storm gives her a taste of a life she is unsuited for. But the housekeepers, Chai and Pen, rescue Whitney from the wrath of the storm and wonders deep inside what Aroon’s heart is made of.

Whitney is glad to take refuge in the housekeepers home, even if she has to put her own mosquito netting together herself, something she hasn’t done before. Jan, the conniving maid, makes fun of her attempt to Aroon who had called to check in on Whitney. But not many things could best Whitney in life, if she put her mind to it. When she accomplishes the mosquito netting, she is ecstatic. Such little things please her.

The morning welcomes sunshine that reveals the damages to Whitney’s hut. As she makes her way to it, she discovers that Aroon is hard at work putting the pieces of her hut back together. She is hopeful that at least he might want her to stay now. A sweet moment occurs between the two as Whitney tries to prove to Aroon that she can use a nail and a hammer, which causes Aroon to shake his head at her comical attempt, and then he teaches her how it is done. Chai walks in on their intimate moment and he shyly walks away, going to his wife for his own “sweet” time. Heh.

In the bustling city of Bangkok, Nut remembers Dekcha warning her about having no evidence to determine that Khun Amnui and Yoting are on the same team. So she approaches Khun Amnui in his office, asking for a job he had promised upon Non’s death. She tells him that she would like to take his offer and he assigns her under Dekcha’s care. Dekcha could only look at Nut with suspicion but he learns that she has ulterior motives in working at Khun Amnui’s company. This new turn in events not only propels Nut closer to uncovering the truth behind Gusuma, but it also challenges Dekcha’s feelings for her. He starts seeing how the other male employees are pining after Nut and gets possessive. He hasn’t come to terms with the growing feelings that he has for her. He calls her his sister, but she has seen him naked before, and they have that easy going history between them that is developing into something more, due to their close proximity.

Khun Amnui on the other hand is getting sicker and sicker. Yoting’s hotel gets taken from under him, causing him to reach for the last olive branch, working at his future father in law’s company.

There is always something very simple, very small that can take Aroon over the edge when it comes to Whitney. This time it is a newspaper article that reaches the town’s eyes and ears. Jan was shopping at the market and decides to use this new tool to sever the ties between Aroon and Whitney. She approaches Aroon while Whitney is in the kitchen and hands him the newspaper article. The article doesn’t bother him that much but the lie does: Jan tells him that Whitney was with her at the market and she gave a different story to the vendor, in essence making herself look good by contorting the truth in the article. This just makes Aroon livid, taking him over the edge.

He storms into the kitchen and wrenches her back into the hut, where he tells her to pack her things. “You and I should never have met!”

“Khun Aroon, I don’t know what you’re talking about. But I didn’t commit any of those things you are thinking about!”

He tells her to get her things and leave, when she doesn’t, he starts packing for her. “I’ll take you the bus station but after that, you are on your own!”

“No! I’m not leaving,” she cries, “You can’t kick me out for something I didn’t do!”

“You have no right to refuse.”

“I don’t know what happened. Why did you change all of a sudden? Everything between us was ok earlier..”

Aroon sometimes couldn’t differentiate the things he sees and knows about her, versus the things he hears. Quite the moody leading man we have here.

“If I knew your game, I wouldn’t have done that (being nice to her.)”

They tug the bag from each other, she refusing to be sent away, he refusing for her to stay.

“I’m not leaving until you tell me what I did wrong!”

He glares at her, “You really need an explanation?!” He decides his next step without so much as a thought to its consequences. “Fine! I’ll give you want you need, so you’ll leave.”

He pulls her face close and forces his mouth on hers.

She’s crying harder now, trying to tear away.

“Isn’t this what you want?” he asks rhetorically and pulls her in for another searing (one-way) kiss.

He tears his shirt off of his body and throws it to the ground. Uh oh.

She’s on the floor, scared. “What are you doing?”

“You wanted me that much right? You followed me here and no matter how hard I push you away, you won’t go. I should have known it from the beginning.”

Omg. The terror reaches her eyes.

“It’s not like that!” she screeches, “Don’t do this!”

“I hope you are satisfied now,” and he attempts the unthinkable. He covers her body with his and kisses her everywhere.

She’s sobbing and finally she screams, “Just kill me instead! Don’t do this to me!”

The bystanders out on the beach can overhear the commotion. Pen is in a state of anxiety, not sure what is happening inside, and what Aroon is doing. When her husband catches up with her, they go in to inspect.

Whitney’s screams to kill her instead reaches the recess of Aroon’s mind. He pulls away in shock and with remorse. The housekeepers reach the hut in time to see Aroon shirtless, and Whitney sobbing. She immediately dashes out of the hut, Aroon following her steps. Everyone horrified of what might have happened.

He finds her standing atop the cliff.

She looks over at him, “There’s no need to follow me. I am about to rid myself from your presence.”

“What do you mean?” he asks, hesitatingly.

“Do you know why I followed you here?” (She’s referring to the beach town.)

Tears roll down her face. “Because I feel ashamed for what I’ve done. The more the law dictates that I was not wrong, the more ashamed I feel. I know that everything that has transpired was my fault. So I followed you here to pay for it. Not because I’m a shameless woman with nowhere else to go.”

He looks terrified of the prospect.

“But right now, I know what I should do,” she says, her eyes filled with sorrow. “I know what will make you happy and untroubled the most. And I know what is best for me.” She looks at him, “You can leave now.. before anyone misunderstands you.”

“What are you going to do, Whitney?” he asks, panicking.

“Do what I should have done a long time ago. Which is to pay with my life,” her nose is red from crying but the tears don’t stop falling. She glances at him again, “Goodbye.”

He utters something and shakes his head, but Whitney is slowly leaning her body back and back, until her body plummets into the water.

They say that before you die, your life flashes before you. Whitney sees her life in an assortment of trouble and pain. The troubles and pains she has caused others and inevitably herself. The death of Non, her father’s anger, Aroon’s almost rape attempt. A life filled with unhappiness. She let it all go as she too, drowns into the depth of the sea.

Aroon hollers at her from the top of the cliff. Without further thought, he jumps into the depth after her. He finally finds her deep in the sea and hauls her body out of the water. He tries CPR then mouth to mouth resuscitation, all the while, calling her name. Whitney comes out of her oblivion and sputters water from her mouth.

Screen Shot 2012-12-05 at 10.46.03 PM

When she gains consciousness again, she finds herself in bed, clean and cared for.

“You’re up,” Aroon’s voice greets her.

“How did I get here?”

“I took you out of the water,” he says and takes a seat on the bed.

She immediately scoots away. “Who changed my clothes?”

He teased her for being a prude when he has seen everything already. He reminds her of the time in the hospital where he toweled wash her body.

She glares at him.

He feels her forehead, searching for a fever. His change in attentiveness is shocking, but pleasant.

She tries to get up but falters back on the bed, her feet hurting. Probably when she was jumping from the cliff. Aroon says as much.

“I’m hungry,” she says. But she can’t walk so Aroon scoops her into his arms and walks her to the dining table.

She’s looking at him as if he grew two heads. Who could blame her?

When they sit behind the table, Jan appears with two bowls of porridge. Whitney looks warily at her bowl, thinking maybe it’s been tampered with again. So she stirs it around, unable to eat.

Aroon catches her meaning and gives her his bowl, heh. And then she is able to eat merrily.

Another sweet moment passes when Whitney wants to do the dishes, and Aroon assists her with it because he thinks they will finish it faster.

As the sunset and the night draws near, Whitney takes a walk in the yard, looking towards her hut. Aroon spots her and asks, “Where are you going?”

She doesn’t answer.

“You’re a really stubborn person, you know?” he comments.

“It’s getting dark now, I think I should head back to the hut.”

“Do you miss it that much?”

He scoops her into his arms again and carries her back to his house, depositing her in bed.

“Stay here tonight. Until your wound heals then you can leave.”

“Why are you doing this?” she asks, after he commands her to stay. “Why did you help me? I really don’t get you. First you act like you hate me, you wanted me gone. Now you act like you don’t want me to go.”

He turns his back to her. “It’s not all that confusing. I don’t want you to die in the hut; it will be a bigger burden.” Then he walks away.

She wonders quietly to herself, “What exactly do you want from me, Khun Aroon?”

After a quiet night sleep, Whitney meanders on the beach, admiring the sunrise. She sees a tshirt sitting on the rocks and is about to take it when she hears his voice. “That’s mine.” Aroon walks from the tepid morning water, shirtless.

She could only stare at him and changes the subject. “Do you look at it every morning?” (She’s referring to the beautiful sunrise.)

“Yes, it gives me the inspiration to start a new life,” he replies. “It makes me realize that no matter how dark life can be, a new day always awaits me.” There will always be a new day. How poetic.

“The darkness you mention, am I the root of it?” she asks.

He doesn’t answer and says he’s going for a run instead.

Whitney tries to make herself useful to the housekeepers. She goes on a market run with Chai and Jan, and that’s where the conniving girl decides to play another card against Whitney. First she reminds the vendors who Whitney is and they all throw vegetables at her and hurdle insults (calling her a murderer.) Chai came to her protection and tells them they will be shopping elsewhere. Secondly, when they were shopping around the jarred goods, Jan sees shrimp paste and recalls that Aroon is severely allergic to shrimp. She plays nice to Whitney and tells her that she will help Whitney cook. With the shrimp paste in tow, Whitney decides to conjure up yummy food.

As everyone seats themselves for a meal, Chai and Pen compliments Whitney with her cooking. After the first bite, Aroon says it’s edible (but does so with a smile.) After a few more bites, the reaction to shrimp kicks in and he hauls himself to the edge of the porch, chucking out food from his mouth. Everyone immediately rushes to his side. Jan turns her conniving eyes on Whitney and says loudly that she has tried to warn Whitney not to use it- and she uses too many scoops of the shrimp paste. Whitney is trying to get to his side but he refuses her. He says that she meant to make him sick and kill him. Ouch.

She gets dismissed again and makes her way back to her hut. Jan appears and throws the mosquito netting and blankets roughly to the ground, warning Whitney to stay in the hut. Whitney is shocked because she was planning on staying in the house until she completely heals. Jan tells her that she looks fine now and that Aroon doesn’t want her around him in case she tries to make him sick again. (So not true!)

Jan’s nastiness was the last straw and Whitney wants to get to the bottom of her poor behavior. Whitney grasps Jan’s arms before she could walk away, she tells Jan that she knows Jan was setting her up. “You knew Aroon is allergic to shrimp! Why did you do this?”

Jan snarls at Whitney. “I hate your face. Right now there’s me and Aroon who hates you. If you continue to be shameless, I can make the other two people hate you too!” She explains gruffly that one doesn’t have to know another before one hates the other. There are some people that you just hate. This last comment leaves Whitney seething in the dark.

Furthermore that night, Jan continues to blow Aroon’s ears, she tells him that Whitney no longer wants to stay in the house.

Aroon looks towards the hut with anger.

Oh boy, can they overcome the many more rough seas ahead of them?

A new life? Ubatheehet Ep 10

lovefia

Posted on December 5, 2012

We’re not driving off into the sunset yet. There’s still a lot of things that both Whitney and Aroon need to work out. But what better than to do so on a beach house?

61672_463828577001893_1046440013_n

Aroon’s intentions were to remove himself from the familiar, get away from it all and recuperate. That’s why he didn’t tell anyone his whereabouts. But he ends up taking Whitney along with him, against his better judgements. She becomes feverish so he takes her to the nearest hospital where the nurses and doctors think he’s her husband. This misconception deems all too much for Aroon, the wound still fresh, Non’s death still lingering in his mind, so he did the thing he knew best, walking away.

The nurses and doctors are appalled he took off, leaving his “wife” to fend for herself. But the said wife was not surprised, she only was apprehensive about where she will go next. You can almost see the two sides of Aroon warring against each other. The hurt side tells him to leave and never come back. But his good side still propels him to come back and rescue her.

“Why did you come back and get me?” Whitney wants to know.

“Do you want to stay here then?” He retorts.

“It’s not that, I’m just curious.” She’s looking up at him with those big, brown eyes.

“At first I wanted to leave you, but I didn’t want to commit a sin by making you someone else’s burden,” he says.

“Thank you for making me your burden,” she smiles.

Meanwhile, some development in the not so good bits of this drama. Psycho Gusuma and Delusional Yoting.

Gusuma is going down the deep end- not only is she not mourning her bff’s death- she’s parading around like she owns Aroon. When Aroon doesn’t play with her and disappears, she assumes he’s staying with Nut. She storms to Nut’s home and accuses the younger woman for wanting to steal Aroon from her older sister and contriving for Aroon to be with her. Psycho. I’m glad though that Nut is now aware Gusuma has been pining for Aroon. Dekcha is not surprised, only that Gusuma is making it more clear after Non’s death.

As for Yoting, he’s real desperate. Helping Whitney through her court troubles really caused him a lot of money and now she broke off the engagement and disappeared. He’s still pretending to think they will marry, so he’s trying to win over her parents. He even partnered up with disgusting boyfriend of her mom, making him scare Nut to the point of leaving her house (fail), and now he’s doing everything he can to track her whereabouts. Khun Amnui, Whitney’s dad is growing more concerned, and sicker because of the anxiety (he gets hospitalized). Unfortunately he trusts Yoting and allows the younger man to help him find Whitney.

I find Dekcha and Nut an endearing couple, even if she can be gullible and stupid at times, at least their scenes are adorable. They are meant to be together.

So on with our main duo, they made it to the mysterious beach town and Whitney is like a kid in a candy store- she has never been to a beach in Thailand before, thus overjoyed. He allows her five minutes to play in the water. She regrets the fact that she doesn’t have a camera, and as Aroon notices her smiling face, he tries to sneak a picture. he immediately pretends that he wasn’t when she turns around though. Heh.

Later they arrive to the beach house that belongs to Aroon’s good friend who is currently living abroad. The housekeepers arrive to greet him and wonders (especially the annoying Jan) about Whitney, who stands there smiling. Her smile fades somewhat when Aroon introduces her as someone he just met on the street. She didn’t have a place to stay so he’s just taking her in for the time being. This gives enough reason for Jan to treat Whitney poorly, but at least the other two housekeepers are friendly enough to her.

Aroon’s battling with his conscience again, when she’s trying to help him with his stuff- since he didn’t bring along her luggage. The box opens revealing Non’s smiling face and Aroon loses it. He feels as if he is betraying his late girlfriend by having her killer live with him.

“You can’t stay here!” He grits his teeth.

“What….” Whitney utters, not sure of his mood.

“You just can’t stay here- I brought you here and that should be good enough! Now you must find your own way out.” Then he made her leave his room.

Some time later, he hears a knock at his door. Whitney’s sullen face greets him.

“You haven’t gone yet?”

“I don’t know where to go,” she replies. I love her shameless attitude. She asks if she could stay in front of the house then.

He’s furious now. “Don’t you understand that I don’t want you close?! I dislike it,”

She begs to stay but he tugs her to a hut across the yard.

“Stop begging me!” He explodes, “I have nothing left for you!” He storms out of the yard, leaving her alone, standing before the sad looking hut.

Well Whitney, if it’s any consolation, there’s a view of the beach?

She is determined to make it livable at least. As she lays down on the straw mat, above the freshly cleaned ground, she mutters to herself, “I can do this. I must do this.” Where else could she go? And that in itself, is the saddest prospect.

The following morning, she tags along to the market. Aroon asks her if she wasn’t embarrassed about not fitting in. She wonders at the comment and looks at her clothing.

“Well I don’t have any clothes..”

He points out the clothing boutiques. Her face glows and she starts picking out the clothes that appeals to her. Realizing she doesn’t have any money, she asks the vendor if she could pawn off her ring. Aroon grasps her ring from her, “Won’t you regret it?! This is more expensive than the clothes.”

She tells him she doesn’t have any money so he pays for her things. They visit other shops to purchase necessary items and again, are mistaken for being lovers. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her when she is wearing her local clothing, a colorful sarong with a soft top. After lunch, he scolds her for disappearing to change into her pretty clothes.

“Thanks for complimenting me,” she says with a smile.

He’s caught off guard, “I’m not complimenting you.”

“Then thank you for buying me clothes, I’ll pay you back.”

“That won’t be necessary since you’re leaving soon, right?”

You just can’t win with him, Whitney.

The fun, easygoing afternoon fades when they return to the beach house. Aroon opens the gate and tells Whitney to drive into the yard. She looks at the steering wheel reluctantly. She slowly sits in the driver side and grasp the steering wheels- Aroon is motioning her to drive forward. Her feet steps on the pedal and she gets flashbacks of the time she hit Non with her car. She panics and her feet slams on the gas. The car goes heralding into the side of the fence, Aroon jumps away in time. Whitney’s face is pale and she’s shakey.

Aroon made sure she is ok before he launches a verbal attack. “If I didn’t jump away, I would be the next to die right?!”

“I didn’t mean it,” she replies shakily.

“That’s all you can ever say! You use this as an excuse for everything!” He explodes. “I came away this far, thinking that I can be rid of it- but you’re still here to torment me!”

He glares angrily at her, the wound still fresh. “Get out of here! Just go!”

They may share the pain from the loss, but she’s so alone in her nightmares. People don’t think that she too may be traumatized by the accident. And for that, I feel badly for her.

Whitney walks away glumly back to her hut.

From afar, the housekeeping couple surmises that something must be going on between the two, how could two people who just knew each other have such an explosive interaction?

In the late afternoon, Aroon looks for Whitney. When he couldn’t find her at his house or at the hut, he begins to worry and searches for her on the beach.

He finds her collecting shells in the corner, and like an angry parent (heh, someone who cares) he scolds her, “next time if you go anywhere, let me know so I don’t have to go looking for you.” Relief is evident on his face.

“Why were you looking for me?” she asks, curious.

Now he’s annoyed. “The water is rising! Do you want to fall in it? Such a kid!” He of course, walks away after saying the last word. Leaving Whitney in total confusion.

Jan tampers with Whitney’s meal, but it only backfires as her sister in law knows her game. Jan had add fish sauce to the meal, so when Whitney takes a bite, she has to force it down so as not to offend the cook. The housekeeper wonders why she is making a bad face. At Aroon’s house, Jan is dining with him and she bad mouths about Whitney, that she’s being a diva and demanding that they serve her. This angers Aroon- no surprise there because he’s already prejudice against Whitney, and any comment made to reference her “poor” behavior only adds salt to his wound.

Aroon goes to her hut and tells her that from now on, she has to find her own meals. He invites the housekeepers to dine with him at the house instead. This is when Jan’s brother takes a bite of the food, and learns that it isn’t edible. The other housekeeper does it also and they discover that Jan must be the one who tampered with the food. They chase her out angrily, leaving Aroon to wonder about the state Whitney is in. He takes a bite of the bad food to confirm, and decides his next course of action.

He made his way to her hut, where she’s balled over with hunger. But she could be stubborn like the best of them.

He places a bowl of food and bottle of water on the ground. “You didn’t get to eat earlier, right? Eat before you’ll starve to death.”

“I’m full,” she lies. Still laying on the ground.

“Full? You didn’t eat much.”

“Everything I do is wrong in your eyes,” she says.

“Then from now on you’ll go eat with me so people don’t have to serve multiple times.” He’s watching her from the entrance.

“I’m not hungry.”

Aroon doesn’t give up, he tells her that he will feed her then. He inches closer and raises a spoon to her mouth. She straightens and takes the spoon from him, opting to feed herself. As she eats, she keeps turning away so he doesn’t see how hungry she is.

Aroon could only look at her with a smile. And I could only look at them with a grin.

Take me with you- Ep 9 Ubatheehet

Posted on December 4, 2012

To what extent does one have to pay for one’s crime? This often objective question becomes muddled for each character in this drama. Whitney killed Non accidentally and in essence effected everyone around her. More importantly, this incident dissolves her friendly relationship with Aroon, the one person she feels knows her the best. But where did she think her life was going? Her fixed attitude of disregard for her own family and life- and way of thinking- is inevitably the catalyst that caused destruction.

But often times, one’s happiness comes from someone else’s destruction.

Screen Shot 2012-12-04 at 12.24.47 AM

Non’s death will propel Whitney and Aroon closer, even when Whitney may not feel that she deserves it, nor Aroon, who tells himself to hate her.

But he tried. And he’s so mean. At times I feel that he’s so stupid, because after all, he was so logical and level headed before. Now when he’s around Whitney, he erupts with anger and torments her. I can’t help but think that he’s gullible. So I’m glad he explained his behavior to Dekcha.

In their first confrontation, he says that it doesn’t matter whether she did it intentional or unintentional, she must pay. From the beginning of the trial, he knew they cannot win the case because they don’t have evidence behind accusing her of manslaughter (as Nut has tried to do.) So the best way to make her suffer for what she has done, in his opinion, is to defame her. Turn her into the she devil and laughing stock of society. Which really shows how much he knows the essence of Whitney. Whitney cares too much, contrary to what people perceive her to be- someone who doesn’t care. So this recent blow deteriorates her will to fight. What’s the point? She has lost everything.

In the second confrontation with Dekcha- after the final trial- Aroon further explains that he has to take Nut’s side. She is alone in this world now, and someone needed to go to bat for her. Which probably made Dekcha feel like the biggest jerk because he spoke up for Whitney and in effect severed his relationship with Nut (she cuts the string that attached the tin can, their form of communication.)

So we have to see that Aroon has taken his revenge on her (I hope that is it!) because he has seen how much pain she has gone through. Her psychiatric condition is shakey at best, her reputation is smeared, and she has been hospitalized from anxiety. He can’t help but feel sorry for her. He saw her at the temple where Non’s casket is housed. Whitney is weeping on the steps, begging for forgiveness and how sorry she was. Her last statement of, “Every breath I take has no meaning. If I could trade places with you, I would,” that touched him.

Days later, he comes to bid his farewell to her at the hospital. He asks the caregiver if she has been eating well. The caregiver could only reply that she’s pitiful and has to be forced to eat. He walks into her room, where she is sound asleep.

“It’s all my fault that you are in this condition.. I’m sorry,” he says. “But you can start a new life now. Your nightmares will be over. Good luck.” He reaches for her hand but a couple of visitors came in and kicked him out, thinking that he is there to harm Whitney. But Whitney wakes and runs after him.

She sees him down the spiraling stairway. “Why don’t you just come and kill me now?! I don’t know how to deal with this or accept your punishment. Just come and kill me now!” she cries, falling to her knees. Tormented, Aroon pushes out of the nearest exit.

Screen Shot 2012-12-03 at 11.32.45 PM

They meet again at Non’s last ceremonial day. They stand on the dock by the riverside. It is a familiar spot, first a birthday, now a funeral.

“I came to do the merit blessing for Khun Non,” Whitney says.

“You didn’t need to,” he replies. “No matter what, the law has determined that it was unintentional.”

“Because it truly was unintentional. I did the merit blessing to ask for forgiveness,” she says.

“Non is not a vengeful person. Right now she is happy in her new place.”

“What about you, will you avenge me?” she asks.

He looks away, conflicted.

“Answer me please, I want to know.”

“It’s irrelevant,” he replies, “because no matter what, we will have nothing to do with each other anymore. We will lead our new lives separately.”

He turns to leave and she stops him. “It’s important to me,” she presses, “I’d like to hear your answer, even if you tell me you won’t forgive me. I can take it. I want to know what to do next.”

“Will my answer help you start over?” he asks.

She nods her head yes.

He steps closer. “Then I won’t give it (the forgiveness.) I don’t want you to start over. I want you to go on living in gloom, to pay for what you have done.” Oh, you don’t mean that, Aroon…

She tears up and he walks away. And she decides that she will live her life in gloom. She won’t refuse anyone anything and continues on her self destruction by agreeing to get engaged with Yoting.

This makes Aroon angry because he thinks she’s marrying for happiness. While she thinks that she’s punishing herself. Despite not caring, Aroon seems quite jealous. Every time he sees her, she’s in the arms of another man. So it begs the question, is the anger he’s emitting due to Non or his jealousy? Heh.

But even if she believes that by marrying Yoting, she’s not doing herself any favors, she quickly learns that he’s downright abusive and cruel. At the wedding convention (where the dress fitting and etc would take place) Whitney severs her engagement to Yoting, he did try to rape her!

Her father hears of the news and it was the last straw. He doesn’t know what to do with her anymore, and kicks her out of the house. She goes to her mom’s but it’s no better. Her mother scolds her for leaving all of the wealth behind. And so, the only place she knows and feels comfortable seeking, is Aroon’s.

The subject currently being discussed, is packing up his condo for a move into the countryside. When he sees her, luggage in tow, he refuses her.

“Take me with you,” she pleads. “I don’t have anything left here either.”

A sheet of paper falls to the ground. It is a picture that she drew. It touched her that he still kept it, but he ignores the pang. He asks the security guards to send her away.

When he drives away from the condo, he sees her sleeping in the corner, drenched in the rain. Aroon’s resolves dropped. He hauls her body into the car, and they make way for a journey to the countryside.

The Accident That Changes Everything- Ubatheehet (Ep 7-8)

lovefia

Posted on November 27, 2012

Whitney could feel her life spiraling out of control. Accidents seem to be the story of her life, but one particularly morbid accident changes everything.

At first, Whitney begins to think that maybe she will find happiness after all. It is her birthday and even though her parents has forgotten it, Aroon- her boss and hero within her heart- takes her to the temple he grew up in to receive a birthday blessing. In many ways he always cheers her up and gives her a different perspective in life. So when she returns home that day, she forgives her father for forgetting her special day (better late than never) and celebrates a birthday dinner with her family. Her parents are who they are. They simply will not change and as Aroon once warned her, to find happiness, she needed to accept the reality.

Little did she know that happiness always evades her. Minor accidents- such as falling on each other, or being seen together- causes a huge misunderstanding that her and Aroon are secretly seeing each other, to the point that Aroon has taken up lying to Non if he ever spent any time with Whitney. This backfires badly, as Non and Nut witnesses the two at the temple together. And when Non calls to confirm with Aroon, he only lies that he is out with a client. This buildup of white lies, as Aroon soon learns, is a detriment to their relationship.

That night, Non is desperate and she needs to do something drastic to win her man back. She arrives at his condo and throws proprietary to the wind by offering herself to him. She essentially assaults him with kisses until he pushes her away. Even after telling him to imagine her as Whitney, he still rejects her. His curt words hurt her, “you’re turning into someone I don’t even know anymore. You used to carry yourself with more dignity than this, what happened?” Jealousy happens. And now disappointment and the realization that she may lose him forever. Non finds herself at the club next, ordering rounds of tequila shots for herself. When she sees Yoting there, she has to make someone feel her worth. If she cannot have Aroon, why not marry a rich man?

And that is another mistake she made, sleeping with Yoting and hoping for marriage and riches, then to learn that he is destitute and despicable. She has several suicidal thoughts until she decides to go home. But the universe works in its funny, unpredictable ways. When she thinks that she is down in the dumps, she learns that everyone has been searching for her and Aroon is overcome with anxiety. When Dekcha confronts him earlier, Aroon discovers that he must decide what he wants to do with Non. When he admits to his friend that he never stopped loving her, he receives his answer: it is the time to make it official. So when Non shows up the following morning, looking miserable, he proposes to her. She is elated, Whitney is happy for them and secretly sad for herself, while Gusuma just sees red.

As Whitney cries in the car, for the man- the hero that she pines after, but never overtly- is going to be someone else’s husband. He has a special place in her heart, and even though through the great times they’ve had- and the friendship that she thinks they have developed- it could not make her stay and witness their nuptials. Whitney decides to head back to France and finish her education. But everything is conspiring against her, including the universe.

It is that accident, which changes everything.

Whitney is packing up her belongings at work and prepares for her departure that evening. She sees Aroon and a lump forms in her throat. He has been trying to be a good fiancé to Non. Even when he saw Whitney at the mall while he was picking out an engagement ring with Non, he steeled himself from leaving her side. Now, he merely wishes Whitney well. They bump into each other and the ring box falls to the ground. As Whitney picks it up, Non appears at the door and her face takes on pure hatred.

“You don’t give up do you?” she roars, “He’s marrying me, you’re just his toy!” Non storms back to her office.

Aroon apologizes for Non’s behavior and promises to talk to her. But Whitney is fed up, she tells Aroon, “Let me do the talking, it’s about time we clear the air. I shouldn’t have let this drag on for so long.” Then she continues, “If she still decides that I am horrid after listening to me, I am willing to accept it. Because a horrid person like myself is the one to leave anyway.”

But this only leads to a public confrontation that will only hurt her later.

Whitney asks to speak to Non, but Non refuses. Whitney decides that now is as good a time as any to clear the air. The nosy employees are all eyes and ears; some even start recording the scene unfolding before them. Shameless hussies. Non is not embarrassed, she calls Whitney horrid, horrid things. Whitney gives up, there is no talking to someone who is so blindsided by what she wants to think and misunderstand. Whitney could only get in, “I wish you well then, make sure you send your wedding news to Yoting.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Non asked, afraid. Whitney tells her that she knows exactly what she’s talking about. After all, Whitney was the one who erased that picture of Non dining out with Yoting secretly. Gusuma may have failed in showing that picture to Aroon, but her new gift, a video clip on CD, will surly land in Aroon’s hands. It is a clip depicting Non and Yoting in the corner talking, and Yoting handing her the purse that she left at his house. It reveals that Non had spent the night with Yoting. He threatens to reveal their relationship if she so much as reveal his financial difficulties.

The gossip about Non and Whitney fighting over Aroon- and that Whitney is a homewrecker- spreads throughout the company. Her father hears of it and berates her in his office. She is so furious at the fact that, time and time again, her father never listens to her side of the story. So she tells him what he wants to hear, that she’s in love with Aroon and she wants to break them up. The final slap from her father stuns her, and Whitney dashes out of his office and into her car, where she revs it up and speeds out of the parking lot. She is hurt from her father’s lack of trust, hurt by Aroon and Non, and blinded by her own pain that she didn’t see Non walking across. Her car hit Non head on and to Whitney’s horror, it stops only when Non’s body crumbles to the ground.

And that is when all hell breaks loose. It is an accident. A horrible, horrible accident that ends her trip back to France, the pending nuptials between Aroon and Non, and most definitely, it ends Non’s life.

How do you pull through such a diabolical event, that even if it is an accident, you are the cause of someone’s death?

This incident changes Aroon. He realizes that he has been weak all this time. He feels responsible for everything leading up to this incident. If he was tough, misunderstandings wouldn’t have happened, and Non wouldn’t have died. Nut is positively determined that Whitney is responsible for everything and she needed to pay with her life. She wants Whitney behind bars. And even though Aroon knows that it was an accident, he still wants her to pay. Gone are the kind thoughts about her, gone are their friendship. Furthermore, Aroon thinks that Whitney is in love with him and wants to break him and Non up. So he too, is determined to see that Whitney is put behind bars.

Shock. Whitney is in a complete state of shock. She is hospitalized from constant blackouts and to make matters worse, she learns that Aroon thinks she’s guilty. She needs to hear it for herself so she escapes the hospital (still in her hospital gown) and shows up at the funeral. Aroon spots her in the corner and Whitney finally knows that all is true, he does want her in jail, punished for the incident. An eye for an eye. Her father’s damage control didn’t help much either, with his attempt to buy out everyone’s cooperation, causing Aroon and Dekcha to quit.

And thus, bringing us to a battle in court.

Wow. What an intensive two episodes! Irreparable circumstances. Vehicular manslaughter. The universe conspiring against Whitney.

No more easy going camaraderie between her and Aroon. Gone are those days. Now we have hatred, vengeful thoughts. The only confusion here is, Whitney asks him (at the funeral) why he thinks such horrible thoughts of her? Why does he want her behind bars and why does he think she intentionally wants to tear him and Non apart? Aroon answers simply that it is based on his assumptions and how he sees it. He used to be so calm and logical, this new Aroon, the darker and illogical one blows my mind. He doesn’t have any evidence or facts, but he would convict her of it? I understand she accidentally killed Non, and her case will be determined based on circumstantial and whether she broke any laws- that is why the police officers are questioning any arguments between Whitney and Non prior to the accident. (I also wonder if they’re going to factor the speeding part into this.)

The biggest question remains, how will she overcome this? Will her father pay her way out (using his hi so connections) or will the law prevail? Vehicular manslaughter is no joke, whether intentional or unintentional, it all falls upon circumstances. And I can’t wait to find out how this will be resolved!

Ubatheehet Ep 6- A Piece of (My) Mind

lovefia

Posted on November 26, 2012

What is the straw that breaks the camel’s back? Unfortunately I’m still waiting for the pin to drop, or any proverbial ending to this teeter tottering of relationship between Aroon and Nanontre. What I would give to cease this incessant screaming by Non.

As Nut has said to Dekcha regarding the situation between her sister and Aroon: they are fighting again over the same things. And as a wise man once said (Einstein), insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Coming from a man who went insane himself, that is quite insightful and an advice everyone should heed, before you know, heading into insane-ville. Which is where a few of the characters in this lakorn is headed.

So Yoting tries to take Non home with him but she awakens slowly and fights him off. He uses a different tactic to rein her in, begs her to take her home and apologizes for his actions. He was drunk and behaved badly. He even convinces her that she could call the cops on him anytime, and hands her his cellphone. Non believes him and hops back into the car. He’s working on Whitney as a future wife, and Non as a prospective new toy. His family is getting so desperate now that his mom has to sell her car. The only option for them is to either mortgage their house or get Whitney to marry him soon.

It is clear that Nut is developing some feelings for her longtime neighbor, Dekcha. They are probably the most normal couple in this drama. They chat with each other through the window with a tin and long string. And tonight was no different when Dekcha and his brother stayed with her while they waited for Non to come home. Dekcha falls asleep outside of her bedroom door and as she tries to make him comfortable, he ends up sliding his head on her lap. They make a cute couple. We also see how jealous Nut gets when she sees Dekcha with Whitney, because she knows that Dekcha has a crush on Whitney.

The club scene from the night before goes viral the next morning. Bystanders had taken a video of the fighting scene (which they labeled “rich girl fighting over a man”). Whitney walks in and overhears the gossip regarding the video. She immediately searches for the video on youtube and to her horror, doesn’t remember anything that had happened that night. Her father calls her into his office, along with Aroon and Non to get to the bottom of it. Whitney confesses that she doesn’t know what had happened that night. Aroon explains that it was just an accident. Apparently that is the theme of the whole drama. Not that everything happens for a reason, but everything that had happened is due to an “accident.” Non tells the President that Whitney was very sick that night- and he asks them what about the “fighting over a man” issue? Aroon explains to his boss that he and Whitney are only coworkers. Whitney turns around to look at Aroon, and she sees that he has his fingers linked through Non’s. Aroon continues to say that he and Non still love each other.

Does it surprise you that Aroon is giving his girlfriend another chance? Non tells him that she behaved badly last night and she is sorry for that. But she did it all because she was afraid of losing him. Deep down Aroon can’t help but feel that his girlfriend is changing and becoming more and more the envious monster.

Whitney finds that their love to be true when she sees them hugging in his office just moments afterward. Feeling dejected and saddened by the image before her, she walks over to Dekcha and invites him for lunch. Aroon and Non happen to go to the same restaurant as Dekcha and Whitney, and we get our onset of jealous glances at each table. Aroon keeps looking over at Whitney, feeling sad that she’ s having lunch with Dekcha, while Whitney keeps glancing at Aroon, thinking about his “coworker” comment.

Dekcha is infatuated with Whitney but things are not working out well for him. When they were at lunch, he tries to hint that he cares about her but Whitney takes his message as a form of friendship. She even thanks him for being her true friend. Dekcha’s smile faded because he obviously wants to be more than that. He even pretends to be her “boyfriend” when she wanted to trick her mother’s match make family to thinking that she is unsuitable for marriage to their son. She dresses skimpy and wears a blonde wig- not to mention that her boyfriend is a punk rock guy. After successfully helping her steer them away from her, instead of being the benefactor, Whitney could only think of Aroon. She tells Dekcha that it was Aroon’s original idea to make herself unsuitable for the prospective groom. She asks Dekcha what she should do to repay Aroon? Dekcha could only look at her with glum.

Gusuma learns that Aroon and Non are good with each other now and she frowns. But we see a change in Non when she is around Gusuma now, she’s wary of her. I hope she catches the other woman’s game soon, at least before it’s too late! Her second attempt to break them up is when Non gets invited for lunch with Yoting, and Gusuma takes a picture of the two dining together. She then emails the photos to Aroon. But thankfully Whitney was taking care of his email while he’s meeting a client, and deletes it immediately. She knows that he would be hurt if he saw those pictures, and when you care about someone, you wouldn’t want them to be hurt right? This scene shows that Whitney truly has feelings for Aroon.

On her way to escape dinner with Yoting and his mother, Whitney finds Aroon on the side of the road, his car broken again. He was on his way to a new development open house. Whitney was tired of being the third wheel with her dad and stepmom and she tells him that she’s looking for a place of her own too. They decide to go house hunting together and this cute scene only shows us how compatible and like minded they are. The agent mistakes them for being newly weds and shows them a few bridal houses. The two are to embarrassed to correct her (which will only be more trouble for them down the road!)

She takes them to a cute house with a small yard in the front and back. They sit on the grass and have another heart to heart conversation, something they tend to do when left alone. Whitney tells Aroon that a home like this is what she would call a real home. He agrees that it is cozy and full of warmth. He asks her whether her childhood home is still around. Whitney says that it is, just not the same anymore. Aroon comforts her by saying that at least she has a picture of a home in her memory, because for him, he could never imagine what that would look like. He’s always showing her that she should appreciate what she has.

Whitney plays the house wife when they are inside, donning an apron and holding a spatula. She says that the kitchen is so cookable. He wonders if she could cook then. With a smile Whitney tells him that she is used to do everything on her own when she studied abroad.

The next stop was a child’s room. She adores it and calls him in to see the room. But Aroon tells her that if bought the house, he would get rid if of the kid’s room and expand the master. This confuses Whitney (her expression was something like “why would you ever do that?!”) but Aroon quickly explains that he would like to be close to his kid from the start. He wants his child to feel the love and warmth from its parents. This touches her heart and she nods her head, “so they don’t feel so empty like me when they get older.” Aroon adds “like the both of us.” Including himself in her loneliness. Aww..

Upon sharing with Non the house plan and brochures, Non seems snobby about it. She tells him that she doesn’t like it and that it’s too small. She’s also afraid of bad neighbors. Nut tries to talk her into it or at least to give it some thought before she completely disregards it. Non eventually folds and agrees to see the house with Aroon since he’s being so smitten with her lately. When they appear at the open house, the agent immediately recognizes Aroon. The agent brings some water to Non (while Aroon is conveniently away) and surmises that Non is Aroon’s neighbor. She made a comment about seeing Aroon’s pretty girlfriend earlier and that they were shopping for a bridal house. Non just loses it. As Aroon walks back to her, she throws her entire glass of water in his face. Without listening to his explanation, she takes off.

But she doesn’t go home, she goes to see Gusuma instead. She’s crying her eyes out while her friend is plotting her next demise.

Aroon doesn’t know what else to do anymore. He tells Nut that Non is becoming too hot headed and doesn’t listen to his explanations. Nut promises to talk to her sister for him.

The next morning Whitney wakes up to her foreign friends wishing her a happy birthday (25 yrs old.) She smiles and prepares for the monks and a birthday blessing. But her morning only went downhill because her father forgets and has already left for work. Angry, she decides to forego the lucky blessing and goes to work. But once she reaches her office, her mother and belligerent boyfriend wants to ask her for money. Now even her mother has forgotten her birthday. She writes her a check but her father catches wind of it and takes the check away. Right in front of the driveway, her parents get into a verbal fight to the point that her father has the security guards escort the disorderly people out. Feeling down, Whitney slumps in her chair. This is how Aroon found her. She tells him that it’s her birthday but her parents are fighting. It is not an important day for anyone. Aroon looks speculative then he tells her that she’s going out with him today. When she asks where, Aroon merely replies that she shall see.

Well at least the end of this episode promises a potential birthday scene between Aroon and Whitney in the next episode. But even so, I’m feeling that this lakorn is insanely draggy. Let’s just get on with this! I’m a little fed up with Non and Aroon.

And I’m going to do a little overthinking about Whitney’s character. I get that she is the product of a broken home. But she’s 25 years old, after 18, one cannot blame one’s parents anymore for the outcome of one’s life. She has total double standards for her parents. She’s always nasty to her father, but with her mother, she forgives her. The only rationale for this behavior is that she sees her father as someone who is more capable, an authority figure who could do more for her, for her mother, but chooses not to. She pities her mother more because she has less and thus does not know better. I see where she’s coming from, but at the end of the day, adults should take responsibility for their actions. She’s an adult and she chooses to act that way. She can totally improve her own life by simply moving out and focus on her own happiness (such as creating her own family.) She’s so caught up in feeling sorry for herself, and craving so much attention that even though I like Whitney at times, her overall view of life is pretty pathetic. That is why she is meant to meet Aroon who is not only someone who needs just as much love, but someone who has the patience and wisdom for it. With him, she will learn to eventually grow up. Golly, the surface level problems of socialites. I do wish Whitney has more going for her than her sulky view of her parents and their lack of love- or the love that she “needs.” At the end of the day, that is Whitney on face value- a woman who appears to have everything- except for what she needs the most.

Ubatheehet Ep 5

lovefia

Posted on November 25, 2012

Although this episode is more of the same from the last few and there is not much to report, I do enjoy the fact that Aroon is starting to feel conflicted at how he feels about Whitney now. Perhaps all of this prodding from everyone that they have feelings for each other is starting to come to fruition. Cool.

In Aroon’s office Non is confronting him about the invitation to the charity show this evening. She refuses to attend because of her friend, Gusuma’s constant pestering about how Aroon really wants to see Whitney as Snow White. I don’t understand why both of them aren’t adding two and two, and determine that Gusuma is the root of their problem. Shrug.

It gets worst, Gusuma lies to Non that she’s taking her aunt to the hospital and she won’t be able to join her at the mall. However, she actually contrives for Aroon to invite her to the play instead. So she dresses up the way Non would, hooks her arm around Aroon, and acts like she is his girlfriend. Even after Aroon picks her up from her house and learns from Gusuma’s aunt that she’s been longing to see Aroon so they could talk about dowries, he still doesn’t do the math. Gusuma is shameless and annoying at the party, even people who are there thought she is Aroon’s girlfriend.

The catwalk commences and the coordinators are in need of a replacement model. They recruit Nut, whom they disregarded earlier. She’s a wreck, her stage fright getting the best of her. But upon reaching the runway, Nut simply transforms and impresses everyone. Even Dekcha is slack jawed at her appearance; he never imagined she could be so pretty.

Back at Non’s house, she is crying and furious about her boyfriend. But she remembers their good times together and decides to give it another shot. She gets ready and makes her way to the hotel where the charity show is held.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs play opens with the queen hurting Snow White. The audience watch with merry as Snow White meets the seven dwarfs, and finally when she takes a bite of the apple, and falls to the ground. Before Prince Charming could revive her with a sweet kiss, a ruckus erupts. Her mother and her cohorts barge into the ballroom. She had read in the newspaper that Kongkaew is trying to match make her daughter up, so she brought her own prospective son-in-law (a rich Chinese man,) she isn’t about to let the stepmom take control over her daughter’s life. The man pulls Yoting away (who is the Prince) before he could kiss Whitney. A fight breaks out and Whitney finds herself in between her mom and dad, being tugged both ways. Finally, Whitney explodes and tells them that she’s not a doll to be pulled in any direction, she’s human. Before she has a meltdown in front of everyone, she runs out of the ballroom.

Aroon follows her and calls after her. When he finds her outside of the hotel, she’s in tears. When she glimpses his face, Whitney wraps her arms around his waist. Aroon is shocked but he tries to comfort her. She begs him to take her away from this place. Dekcha and Nut walk out of the hotel in time to see the embrace. And matters get uglier when Aroon drives out of the driveway, and Non sees them in the car together. She simply loses it. Yoting finds her on the ground crying. When he tries to help her, Non keeps yelling at him. Her sister and Dekcha come across her with Gusuma in tow. Non lays her eyes on Gusuma and she notices the dress that Gusuma wears. This isn’t the first time that her friend has tried to dress like her and lied to her. But much to my chagrin, Non forgives her yet again. Serves her right to be brainwashed then!

Aroon takes Whitney to the man made basin by the pretty bridge. His phone rings and Whitney pleads for him not to pick it up. He tells her that her family is concerned about her, but Whitney just shakes her head, her face wet with tears. He thinks that Whitney is seeing her family in a bad light. Whitney looks at Aroon and says to him that her parents never gave her what she needed the most. He asks her what that is.

“Love,” she says. “My father thinks that by providing for me, it is sufficient. And my mother is merely using me as a way to get back at Kongkaew.”

She tells him that she wishes she’s not part of the family. Aroon explains to her that we can’t choose our parents, can we? And the same goes for them. He advises her that the best way to find happiness is to love them for who they are (not what she needs or wants them to be.) He tells her that they are not ideal but they are who they are. The Abbott once lectured him that we cannot find happiness until we learn to accept the reality. How insightful.

As they walk back to the car, Whitney encounters a turtle and decides to set him back to his environment. Aroon watches her free the turtle into the water and catches her before she falls. They have a momentarily sweet moment.

Aroon drops her off at the hotel where her car is parked. He tells her to keep trying. Whitney glances at him and utters that she will keep fighting if she has the encouragement. Aroon says that he will be her encouragement. Aww.

Whitney does not open her door for her father when he wants to see her that night. Kongkaew tells her husband to try again tomorrow.

The funniest part I found about this whole episode is the sign on her door. It says “rule #1: I’m always right. Rule #2: If I’m wrong, please look at rule#1.” LOL.

Whitney thinks about what Aroon has told her. And meanwhile in Aroon’s room, he only thinks about how she hugged him and how he caught her before she fell. Heeh. Someone has a crush!

The next morning Non rips Aroon a new one. (Her friend Gusuma is telling her not to give in.) She’s boisterous and makes a scene at the showroom. Aroon tells her not to talk badly about Whitney, which makes Non even angrier because he’s protecting her. Whitney overhears from the break room and tries to explain but Non walks way. Whitney asks Aroon if he wants her to keep trying. Aroon says that it is not her fault but Whitney feels guilty. The day is not starting off well for Whitney, especially when Yoting came to see her and asks her out to lunch. She is ready to refuse, but she sees Non in the corner of her eye and decides to give in.

Yoting asks Whitney if she is willing to chat with one of his juniors who is interested in studying abroad in Paris. Whitney relents and learns that the “chatting” will be done in a club. Also during lunch, Aroon and Dekcha talks about Whitney. Dekcha asks him if he cared about Whitney more than Non now? Aroon is confused at the question, but his friend tells him that he should start being honest about how he feels. Aroon could only look conflicted because just earlier, he was guilty of thinking about her. I like how Dekcha is putting his friend in his place- this will only make Aroon ponder more deeply about how he feels.

Gusuma tells Non that one way to get back at Aroon (and not letting him off the hook) is to join the girls at the club to celebrate one of the girl’s newly acquired singlehood. Non hates the club and Aroon thinks it’s not appropriate for good girls, so to spite him, she ends up going. Yoting has the bartender drug Whitney’s cocktail so he could take her home with him, but she heads to the bath room feeling weak and ill. Non finds out from her sister that Aroon is on his way to come get her and is ecstatic, but Gusuma warns her that she needs to play her cards better. Non remains in her seat, while Aroon enters the club. He sees Whitney on the ground and helps her to the patio outside. Aww, he’s always rescuing her. But his heroic endeavor is seen- in Non’s eyes- as his interest in Whitney.

She catches wind that he’s caring for Whitney and it is the last straw. She screams at him and pushes at poor Whitney, who is already weak from the drug. Whitney falls on top of Aroon. He is overly concerned and braces her fall. This drives Non bonkers and she tells him to not bother with her again- is she breaking up with him? I hope so. She runs back into the club and downs a few drink to mock her newfound singlehood.

Aroon takes Whitney back to her house, her parents are a gawk at her condition. Her father is only capable at yelling at her. They thank him for helping her yet again. As Aroon drives away, he tries to call Non to no avail. He soon receives a call from Gusuma (the hyena) that Non is angry and went home. But Gusuma needs a ride. Aroon, our Mr. Nice Guy, agrees to take her home.

Non is pretty plastered now. She runs into Yoting at the club. She yells at him for not controlling Whitney. Non is afraid of losing her boyfriend completely. Yoting admits that he and Whitney are not an item, so it is not like he could forbid anything. Non is fed up with the scene and wants to go home. Yoting drives her home, but before they reach anywhere, he looks conniving at her. Hm, what will become of Non?

All I have to say is that someone should check Gusuma into the loony bin. That woman is psycho. Hopefully everyone’s meltdown in this episode will lead to something drastic. Do stay tune.

Ubatheehet Ep 4: “If you were my pr’ek..”

lovefia

Posted on November 20, 2012

This episode examines the predicament of our hero, who finds himself growing further away from his girlfriend: they are always arguing and he’s learning certain things about her that he disapproves of. Which tests his character, because at the end of the day, is he the type to persevere with the relationship or give up?

Aroon’s pet peeve is someone who compares themselves to others and someone who lives outside of their means. It’s becoming glaringly obvious that his girlfriend Non, is showing sides of herself that he hasn’t already seen. And I think that that bugs him the most, the fact that they have been together for so long, yet he wasn’t aware of her pesky habits. For instance, she likes to shop at expensive stores and max out her credit cards. She explains to him that she needs to remain chic if she’d like to stand a chance in the company. When she couldn’t afford to buy a purse, she outlandishly borrows his money. They’ve talked about saving up to buy a house but his girlfriend is spending her money recklessly- and all for the sake of keeping up with the joneses.

It doesn’t help when each of their friends confirm that they just need to work this out, persevere. Dekcha advises Aroon to think about all of the good times he and Non had together. While Nut reminds her sister that Aroon is the best man for her and that she had always seen them happy together. No one could fathom that two people who are growing miles apart have already changed. Non seems to think that it is because of Whitney (due to Gusuma’s prodding) and Aroon thinks, well, that she strives to be someone other than herself. But could it be that upon the appearance of someone else (Whitney), it allows Aroon to see a different side of his relationship that hasn’t really worked to begin with? Is Whitney then inevitably involved whether she wants to or not?

One thing is for sure, this episode reveals that Aroon and Whitney are much more compatible than they realize, which makes for a great relationship development. They spend a whole day together, following a night when Whitney drops him off at his condo (his car broke down yet again.) She asks him whether he likes sitting in her car. He is nonchalant about it and advises her to get her car blessed before she continues driving it. This is news to Whitney, she isn’t familiar with the concept of blessing a car for luck after purchasing it. She takes down the name of the temple from him. On a weekend, she decides to heed his advice. Like minds.. Aroon is visiting the temple that day as well. She meets the monk who raised Aroon and tries to help the older man up but doesn’t realize that a woman could not touch a monk’s skin. Aroon appears around the corner and they help the monk back to the temple, upon which, Whitney proceeds to interrogate the monk.

They walk out of the temple and Whitney asks Aroon what happened to his mom and why he was raised in a temple. (After learning that he is the dream son for the monk. What no weakness at all?) Aroon asks her why she wants to know, lol. Whitney blurts out that friends should want to get to know each other, but she changes her words and says that people who work together should want to get to know each other. Aroon takes her to his mother’s burial. He explains to her that his mom had a terminal illness and before she passed away, she sent him to live in the temple. She knew that she would not have long to take care of him. But Aroon is not sad. The monks taught him to not compare himself to others and to be very proud of himself. Whitney adds that he should be very proud of himself, look where he is at now.

The temple kids approach them on their way out. They invite Aroon to kick around a ball with them. He humors the kids as Whitney plays the cheerleader. She has never seen her boss smile and to watch him play with the kids, she couldn’t help but smile with him. Aroon’s phone rings and not wanting him to get in trouble with his girlfriend, she pretends to be Aroon’s guy friend lol. At the end of their bout with the soccer ball, Whitney wants to go to the evening fair by the temple. Her smile and happiness is contagious, I don’t think there is a moment with her that Aroon feels sad. His quiet demeanor needs a fun, feisty girl to ruffle his feathers. They eat, play and laughed together. But this scene is not all about laughing; the two is also pulled together. They take a seat on the bench to nibble on their snacks.

Aroon glances at her and says that she’s like a kid. Whitney wrinkles her nose and says that he’s like a father who’s taking his daughter to the fair. And out of the blue, she blurts out, “I like you like this.” Aroon chokes on his food. She tells him that when he smiles like that, he’s even more handsome. Aroon could only look at her with bemusement.

“Do you want me to just smile like a fool?” he asks.

“Just smile,” she tells him. “Please smile for me. You’ve never smiled for me before.”

“There’s not a lot of cause in my life to smile. I’m not very good at it,” he admits.

“Don’t think of it that way,” she replies, “In my life, I don’t have many causes to smile. But I always try because it makes me feel better.”

“And what is it about your life that is so difficult?” he asks in return.

She opens up about her mother being a gambling addict, and her father, addicted to his second wife, lol. She tells him that no one needs her. Females think she comes off too strong and men just wants to be with her for obvious reasons. Is that sad enough? She wants to know. Aroon tells her to face her problems and fight it, it will make the problem less daunting. She tells him she has been trying, otherwise, she might have already gone insane. He looks at her with understanding.

That night after Whitney drops him off at his condo, Aroon learns that she had been the one who pretended to be his male friend. He smiles at her mischievousness and glances at the picture of himself on his desk. How cute is that? He kept her drawing!

Meanwhile Whitney’s defiance against her step mom is backfiring on her. She’s too chummy with Dekcha and his family- forcing Kongkaew and the society’s ladies to help purchase goods from the market. And when Whitney promises to go against every one of Kongkaew’s lectures and wishes, Kongkaew seeks her husband’s help for some preventative actions. They feel that match making Whitney with a hi-so man, namely Yoting, it would disincline her to get any closer to Dekcha. To do so, they arranged for Whitney to play Snow-white, and Yoting as Prince Charming, at their upcoming charity show.

Whitney is livid that she is being forced to play in the charity show. But she isn’t going down without a fight. She tells her dad that in order for her to play Snow White, they would also have to hire Dekcha’s siblings as her seven dwarves and Nut as one of the models. They agree to her terms, but this cause dispute with the coordinators and they bully Whitney. I love how she confronts them with their attempts by telling them that if they mess with her next time, they will surely be sorry.

Non becomes more irrational and irritable every day. She flips out when she learns that her sister is relegated to being a server when she didn’t past muster of being a model. She felt Whitney is responsible for that. Then when she suspects that Aroon is starting to change on her, she tries to play up the fact that Whitney is already spoken for. Based on the news released earlier by Kongkaew- that a matchmaking for Whitney and Yoting is underway- Non immediately shows Aroon the news. But she didn’t know that Whitney has already told Aroon that she cannot stand Yoting and that she was merely using him as a devise to escape Aroon that one time. Aroon is confident that there is nothing between Yoting and Whitney. No matter though, to him, gossiping about anyone is rude and he tells Non this, causing her to be doubly upset at him. It seems like nothing he does or say will make her happy. It doesn’t help that Gusuma is constantly brainwashing Non.

The day of the charity event arrives and everyone is doing the final rehearsal. Aroon walks by the hotel ballroom and catches Whitney in her Snow White costume, rehearsing her line. She is lively, happy and completely infectious. He finds his feet walking closer towards the stage of its own volition. The “dwarves” (kids) notice him and come to his side. Whitney looks away shyly, embarrassed at being caught in her rehearsal. They meet for a cup of coffee in the lobby.

“I’m so embarrassed to be seen in this outfit,” she says.

“It looks good,” he compliments her.

“Good then, I will dress as Snow White to work everyday then, “ she teases, “as for you, you will dress up as Prince Charming.”

He smiles widely at her.

Nut spots them from across the lobby and looks at them worriedly. They are enjoying their dessert and coffee.

Yoting is furious that Whitney is missing. He berates the entire crew for wasting his time. [He’s such a duchebag and playboy, could you blame Whitney for being disgusted of him? He’s so confident of his conquest skills that he tells his mom that he is sure he could get Whitney. She’s a big fish, and it will take some time to reel her in. It’s even worst when her father indicates that it is normal for a man to be a playboy.]

Funny that Aroon mentions to Whitney (referring to Yoting), “It looks like you’re having a good time on the stage. You must like it.”

“Who says?” she replies. “It’s boring. Did you know that this morning, reporters were interviewing only about my story with Yoting? It was frustrating.”

“Then you must be a great actress because you made me believe that you were really having a good time (on stage,)” Aroon says.

“Well there was no pr’ek. But if the pr’ek were you, I wouldn’t complain,” she blurts out. Then realizes her mistake when she sees Aroon’s expression, his smile fading.

“I meant to say that.. if it changed to be you that would be good right? You or even Dekcha,” she explains quickly, “it would be fun.”

He nods his head awkwardly.

She gives him three invitations to the event tonight. They were extremely hard to get and she wants to make sure that Non attends it as well.

As we all can surmise, Gusuma twists the story about the tickets to Non. Aroon had forwarded the tickets to Gusuma for Non, so Gusuma tells Non that Aroon really wants to go and doesn’t care if Non decides to go or not. This fuels Non’s anger and she storms to Aroon’s office and tells him that Whitney could not pay her to attend. To Aroon, his girlfriend is becoming more unreasonable by the day, drawing him even further away from her. And thus, bringing him closer to Whitney.

The story really takes its time with this, setting up the feelings, subplots, so that by the time they do end up together, it wouldn’t hit us by surprise. I can’t help but think though, what they did in 4-5 episodes, could easily be done in one episode. Brevity is not Channel 7’s strong suit. Despite it all, we are shown more of Aroon’s character and depth, which is sustaining my interest.

Be careful what you wish for: Raak Boon

lovefia

Posted on November 19, 2012

Brought to us by TV Scene, Raak Boon (The Holy Source) which debuted last weekend, featured Mike Pirath as Lapin/Ton and Margie Rasri as Jae, and it explored the idea of a powerful ancient box that could make your deepest desires come true. Much like a genie indebted to you, this “glong raak boon”- this box of holy source- asks you to repay with three deeds, and upon successful completion, it will grant your greatest wish.

The story starts with two people who were chosen by the holy source: Khun Sarat (Ton’s father) and Long (uncle) Tawee (Jae’s mentor.) This happened a long time ago, Long Tawee was a drunkie and his wife had cancer. He wished to abandon his alcoholism and cure his wife’s cancer but he was skeptical of the box’s magic. Until things started coming true: he no longer depended on alcohol and his wife was cured. He also started seeing ghosts and was assigned to help them. However he learned that the wish can never be infinite and people who were meant to die, inevitably die. The box chose Khun Sarat next, who was fighting cancer and simply wanted to live long enough to take care of his family and business. He too cannot outlive fate and dies. Prior to his death, he gave the box back to Long Tawee, who was working for him at the time.
